Apple becomes latest ‘Anonymous’ hacker target

Security

Notorious hacker collective “Anonymous Operations” on Sunday published data it claims to have obtained by breaching a server belonging to Apple. The data, which consisted of 27 usernames and passwords, was allegedly taken during from surveys stored on an Apple server. Though the group said on one of its Twitter accounts that it is “busy elsewhere,” and therefore will seemingly not be targeting Apple again in the near future, it claims to have exploited a security flaw common to several companies when it gained access to Apple’s server. Anonymous said the breach was part of its AntiSec movement, short for anti-security, which is aimed at “exposing corporate and government data and humiliating security firms.”

27 users from a retail survey? Apple retail isn’t even part of apple’s actual internal network… seem’s kinda lame.

it could mean, they had problems and that was the best they could do. especially after the other hacks, they stated they stole thousands of usernames and passwords, but with apple only 27?

    • Substring

Perhaps their survey is soooo boring that even the hackers do not want them, and therefore stop at 27? hee hee.

Of course they were running Mac server edition, the LEAST hackable of all the server OS’S
    /sarcasm

It’s NOT hackable and any instance of it being so is quickly hushed as not possible. They will release a patch for this non-problem though. LOL

    • Gru

No proof that it was a Mac. There are other OSs in use at Apple.. Solaris, Linux, and yes even some Windows Server boxes.

That’s anticlimactic, considering what they did to so many other companies.

last month, apple’s iphone passwords got hacked on over 700,000 users, now this. Apple is NOT secure. Gonna take a looooong time before they get into the region of RIM.

    • http://www.section303.com codeyh

The region of RIM sounds dirty..

kinda like their stock price.. HEY OH!

    • Common Sense

Can you please post the link where it is mentioned that 700,000 iPhone users password was breached? I think I missed that.

      • Anonymous

it was actually posted here on BGR i believe. Article stated how easy is was to hack into iphones because they only had 4 digit passwords that only used #’s, unlike other phones that could use the whole alphabet along with numbers and even mixing them together. Passwords could also be 26 characters in length. I’d say the report came out about 3 weeks ago if i remember correctly.

Hacker stated that they could hack any iphone on the planet that they wanted and that the 700,000 was done in a matter of hours.

You have the option to use a alpha “complex” password on the iPhone. You can change it from security settings

      • Substring

I don’t think the screen lock passcode is meant to keep out the hackers. It is merely for the curious folks who happen to pick up your phone. Hackers can get in through more sophisticated way over the air.

      • Anonymous

If you actually read the article and have some sort of comprehension ability, then you would know that the app in question merely asked the user to enter a 4-digit password to use the app. Of course, most people likely used the same 4-digit password as their actual password. The app then forwarded the newly entered password to the developer for “research”.

It was a phishing attack (likely benign), not someone “cracking” the iPhone.

Plus, you can use an advanced alpha-numeric password if you enable the options in settings.

      • Gru

Wow. You’re a complete tool. “People CAN use crappy passwords” DOES NOT MEAN “700,000 iPhones were hacked.” Good lord, do you actually believe the ridiculous drivel that you’re writing? What you said isn’t even correct..

Please remove yourself from the internet until you develop even the slightest clue…

      • Common Sense

Somebody said “they could do it” but not doing it does mean “I am an young chap looking for glory but do not have the capability to earn it”

If hacking an iPhone or Android is that easy, then millions would have been hacked by now. How many actual hacking happens til date?

By the way, hacking past the Lock Screen or the App you are referring requires physical access to the phone. So your friends need to steal 700,000 phones before hacking them.

Wasn’t it more like a developer made an app that asked users to enter their unlock PIN and the app proceeded to forward the PIN to the developer?

    1. The Passwords were encrypted. That means they are kept encrypted on the server database. This makes them useless to anybody who obtained them. This is like, you stole a 500 page book but the pages are unsorted and no page number either.

You can’t login into the server from the data published.2. It is unclear if the data is obtained from a server owned/managed by Apple. My understanding is that they are obtained from server managed by third parties hired by Apple to carry out online surveys.

    3. it is lame on the side of the hackers to publish some useless data from some useless places.

    U rimjobbers mad?

They could only find 27 apple computers running to hack

    • Anonymous

      of the 100 that they sold… i kid, i kid ;)

If you’re gonna hack anything, can you guys hack it to refresh everyone’s licenses? I’m at 5 of 5 now and I think I shouldn’t be penalized for having been such a longtime member of the Apple store. Maybe also allow me to get songs I had previously purchased and lost the files?

    • Anonymous

The latest iTunes update allows you to do just that… (redownload previously purchased songs)

  • Anonymous

” taken during from surveys” Wut? A little proof reading please.

  • Anonymous

I’m surprised no one is taking Anonymous to task and daring them to attempt to hack their environment.

  • Biggles

Somebody explain this anti-sec movement to me.  Security is a way to protect oneself, and I can only imagine these folks deem it necessary for information to be free for anyone.  If that’s the case, I’d love to see an open web page detailing the hackers and everything from their date of birth to their favorite sandwich.  Of course that will never happen because, as we all know, any organization tends to root themselves in hypocrisy in some way, shape, or form.  These guys are no different from their targets.  Sham.

    • Anonymous

I believe the purpose is to take to task the “security” many companies use, companies that keep our credit cards on file.

  • Anonymous

You see? That would never ever happen to Google!

    • Anonymous

Doesn’t it ever get tired? You seriously must have something else to do? I’ve never seen such consistent trolling in my life. A joke’s a joke, but it’s past old now.

  • Fray Contreras

If I was one of the hackers, I would look for the next upcoming iPhone and show it to Samsung just for fun =)

  • http://www.sk1wbw.wordpress.com Wayne Williams

27???  That’s it?  They busted Sony for millions, right?

  • Anonymous

I have a feeling Steve Jobs is NOT happy about that.

thanks anon…keep up the good work and keep putting fear into the heart of corporations around the world…these fuktards step on the little guy and the laws only protect the rich…keep at ‘em…anything you can do about corrupt financial aid lending universities? UAFS in fort smith would be a great look into project…

  • Anonymous

And what about all the iTunes hacking and theft that Apple has yet to publicly acknowledge?

  • Olegreg

All these hacker groups are government false flags so that the gov has a viable reason to take full control of the Internet.

  • homescrub

tee hee, apple trolled the hackers..tee hee
