Apple to surpass HP as top notebook vendor in 2012

Computers

Apple will surpass HP has the world’s largest notebook vendor in 2012, according to DigiTimes. There’s one catch, though: that statement is only valid if tablet PC sales are included in the overall “notebooks shipped” figure. Here’s how it could work: tablet PC shipments are on track to top 60 million units this year, and Apple has a 60% grip on that market thanks to an expected 40 million iPad shipments this year. Analysts think that 80 million tablet PCs will ship next year, and they project Apple will move 60 million iPads alone — a 40% share of the market. DigiTimes also said that the Cupertino-based firm could ship 15 million MacBooks next year, for a total of 75 million “notebooks and tablets” shipped. HP, on the other hand, is on track to ship 45-50 million notebooks this year. DigiTimes did not address HP’s new TouchPad tablet, the company’s 7-inch webOS tablet rumored to be waiting in the wings, or the possibility of the company creating and shipping tablets running Microsoft’s new Windows 8 operating system.

that Apple reign just won’t let up!

  • Brian

This is a lie, it includes tablets, which is on separate category.

    • http://twitter.com/mistercarter7 Mike Gonzalez

ummm a tablet that costs as much as a windows laptop…

A motorcycle can cost as much as a Kia or even more, still doesn’t make it a car.

      • Shanghai Dan

And does 1/10th what the Windows laptop can do!

      • Anonymous

What if it meets 90+% of the persons needs? At one point in history, PC’s did not has much personal use. It all takes time. If you act like you stand alone, then you will stand alone.

And sadly the iPad can’t even remotely get close to the functionality of a basic netbook.

      • Anonymous

A netbook, really? So what can you do on that grossly underpowered netbook that you can’t do on the iPad? Please limit it to functions useful to the majority of consumers.

The only things I’ve seen people use netbooks for is web browsing, email, Facebook, and light word processing.

Not sure why the BGR software isn’t allow a reply to “Pendergast” but WRT to what a netbook can do but not an iPad… CNET has a 10 reason comparison. I tried posting the link but the BGR software doesn’t allow for it. Google the CNET for them but I shall even pile on a few more.

        # 11. Can’t real multitask.
        # 12. Can’t run full versions of software like Office or whatever else. Runs a cell phone version of an OS.
        # 13. Not just not able to plug in your camera to load pictures via USB or SD but no ability to USB host. So you have no ability to plug your favorite USB device.
        # 14. No 1080p video out.

for a vast majority of users, an iPad does everything they need to do.   I can’t do my high speed vectorized hydrodynamics real-time visualitzation of a hydrogen bomb warhead passing through the atmosphere on my Intel laptop, but I don’t say ‘it’s not a computer.’

It’s got a CPU, RAM, an input device, a network stack, persistent storage, and the ability to run applications, and even write programs that run in memory (javascript).   What else do you need to do to be a ‘computer?’

  • Anonymous

They need $100 less in the macbook and MBP13, $250 less in the MBP15. and $400 less MBP17

    • TwelfthAG

It seems like it’s priced exactly where people will buy it, so why lower the price?

      • http://twitter.com/mistercarter7 Mike Gonzalez

well… the MBP15 could be a bit cheaper, i got one, but i think 1750 euros is a bit too much

      • Anonymous

Then why did you buy it?

      • TwelfthAG

Apparently it was priced perfectly since they got you to pay 1750 euros instead of 1550 euros. Apple profited an additional 200 euros.

    • Msimpson

Yeah, but everyone knows that Apple uses performance enhancers, while HP is clean.   Who likes a cheater?

    • Anonymous

Based on my fellow Goofans (aka Apple Haters) all Apple products are worth absolutely nothing, nada. And I agree. So your discounts are way too low.

      • Anonymous

Please send memo to Google. Their developers are using Apple. In fact, no Windows machine allowed.

    • Anonymous

You should apply at Apple, they are looking for people in Marketing. I am sure if you present yourself well with your vast business knowledge and acumen, you will garner a trophy high six figure salary. Go get them.

      • Anonymous

No thanks, I have an Android phone and they won’t accept me like that and I won’t change it.
You should apply there, they might be looking for Steve’s replacement.

      • Anonymous

Damn! You’re good and fast. I can’t apply. Never worked for anyone, never will. But, owning Android will not deter them from hiring you. In fact that might appear as a bonus in the knowledge department.

  • JD

I enjoy my iPad, but it is not a “notebook/laptop”. If they include the iPad, it will only be to make Apple look good. Let’s face it. Mac sales are up, but Apple’s money is in the iPhone, iPad, iPod. If it wasn’t for those, Apple wouldn’t be where they are financially.

    • Anonymous

IBM and others though PC’s were not computers or worthy of anything. History repeats, just with a different crowd.

  • http://identi.ca/LauRoman Laurențiu Roman

Ok, but my question is how does HP stack againts the other notebook vendors?

    for the misleading title.

  • first_time_visitor

@Laurentju, concerning the misleading title, I agree. I don’t know why this site didn’t just provide the link to the source article, “Apple likely to dethrone HP as leading portable PC vendor” on the digitimes website. Todd Haselton really knows how to pad his writing. Compare:
“Apple will surpass HP has (sic) the world’s largest notebook vendor in 2012, according to DigiTimes. There’s one catch, though: that statement is only valid if tablet PC sales are included in the overall “notebooks shipped” figure.”
    vs.
“Apple is likely to replace Hewlett-Packard (HP) as the global number one notebook vendor in 2012 if tablet PCs are included in the calculation of global notebook shipments, according to industry sources.”

I doubt it, their are alot of cheap computer that hp sell under 300 and their are a lot of cheap people who like buying bargain basement laptops. go to your local best buy or walmart  you’ll see cheap people buy pentium, celeron or low end AMD processors in 2011. Who fuck buys these things cheap people. I hope apple keep selling expensive macbooks over $1000, keeps the product valuable and resellable

    • Anonymous

Most of those buying the cheap computers don’t do much on them. An iPad will do all they need, and they can show it off too.

With iOS 5 going “PC free” many will start buying iPads as their main computing device.

      • Anonymous

You’re correct. my son’s six grandparents are all doing the iPad thing. They are leaving the PC world.

      • Anonymous

Good to hear you have personal experience. It’s going to be a pretty big deal soon, Apple knows it and that’s why Foxconn will soon start making iPads in Brazil to meet demands.

And for people saying you can’t count iPads, trust me Apple is happy it’s not counted at the point, so that it will be too late before they realize that you count it or you don’t count it, it’s affecting PC manufacturer’s bottom-line.

At the same time I’m sure they see it, and that’s why they’re all trying to get in on the tablet market, ’cause they know it will be the future computing device for the majority.

      • Anonymous

        Six grandparents?

      • Anonymous

        I shudder at that idea~~~

    • Anonymous

You think $1k if an “expensive” laptop? LOL That’s just getting started.

  • Shanghai Dan

But if you include calculators, HP will outsell Apple!
Seriously – trying to claim a tablet is an equivalent to a laptop is really stretching.  Might as well include calculators at that point, too…

    • Anonymous

You have a point, calculators are computers; simple at this point. Your genius is beyond reproach.

    • Anonymous

Actually casio watches are computers too… So they win. Or maybe timex?

  • Anonymous

What’s the % of MacOS vs MSFT Windows users these days? A measly 7% vs 81%. LOL

At one point in time the greater world population thought slavery to be good. Majority doesn’t make it good or right.

It is completely idiotic to make this to and compare OS choices to some sort of moral argument. There is no morally right or wrong OS choice. Only a OS religious zealot would try to make this out to some sort of OS war.

      • Anonymous

OS religion? What is that? I care less what the technology is, I don’y even buy our tech gear. I am far too busy to care about this trivial BS. Remember, you made the OS religion statement, you moron. You are the one that cares so much to blabber your ass off about your meaningless stat. Who cares! You’ll die and the world will keep chugging along and you’ll no longer be missed or cared about after your significant others perish. You consumptive piece of shit!

      • Anonymous

        Your logic is horribly flawed.

This would only be the case if ipads shipped with OSX. It doesn’t.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent.com
