Samsung asks ITC to block import of Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

Business

Earlier this week Samsung filed a complaint with ITC against Apple and asked the government agency to block the import of Apple’s iPod, iPhone, and iPad. The battle between Apple and Samsung has been long drawn out. In April Apple sued Samsung over the Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab, and other products, alleging that Samsung was infringing on its intellectual property by creating copycat devices. Samsung bit back later that month and sued Apple in its own intellectual property lawsuit. Both Apple and Samsung requested that the other company show its upcoming products, but the court forced Samsung to show its new devices and denied access to Apple’s next iPhone and iPad. Apple filed another patent lawsuit against Samsung last week, again alleging that the company making unlawful use of protected IP. According to FOSSPatents, a decision on the import band could be reached in 16 to 18 months. The legal battles could take a toll on Apple and Samsung’s relationship; Apple remains the largest buyer of Samsung’s LCD products, and FOSSPatents said there are reports that Apple is planning to drop Samsung from its list of component suppliers.

You meant Korea Korea – right?

Apple has issues with other people IPs as well – but at least they don’t run screaming and whining about it but keep it down and pay their due – and they pay a lot!!
Usually way more then the owner would have ever made out of it on his own.

SAMSUNG finally gets banned from my home for a looooooooong time.Innovate – not imitate. And if you imitate – pay for it and shut tfu.

    Awh poor Apple :(

    lol @ Sadsung

If they block Apple, whose design are they going to copy then? I mean Sadsung can’t come up with an original design if their lives depended on it.

I think you mean Samsung was infringing in the second half of that sentence, chief.

If they blocked the import of both i am sure the co-CEO’s/Board Buddies at RIM would be very grateful

    embrace competition…dont stifle it…
    focus on innovation…

clearly the powers that be arent familiar with the “abundance mentality”

    • http://twitter.com/chrismanning Chris Manning

That’s just it, by copying Apple design, Samsung isn’t focusing on innovation, and they are instead receiving a benefit they didn’t pay for, which creates an unfair level of competition, since Apple already paid millions on their designs.

      • Anonymous

That’s the nature of the industry now.  I would hardly call Apple’s designs as innovating,  More like making step improvements over what other people have done.  Everyone, Apple included copies and adapts ideas from everyone else.  The problem here is the abuse of overly broad patents on ideas.

      • Anonymous

It’s Apple that is saying Samsung copied.  No legal decision has been made to support Apple’s claim.  Maybe you are just alleging and not stating, hmmm?

      • Anonymous

BTW, if Apple actually did spend millions to come up with the rectangular glass front slab phone design (like every other touch phone, pretty much), I would be truely disappointed.

Finally Apple learns what the Koreans are really like. The others in Korea are no different. The Koreans are very patriotic and nationalists. Everything they do is in their own interest only. One day in the city and you will see that Koreans pretty much only buy and use their own products. Like they were taught and raised to only buy and consume their own products and to boycott all other foreign items.

    • Rachel Lee

you will be amazed by how many iphones are out there in seoul and other cities
as a korean living in the US, I’m very offended
koreans are the same consumers as americans are and they buy products because they want or need them not because they are from Korea

      • http://twitter.com/jj_hh1 J Hamburg

Correct – it is stupid to put this on a personal level!
Apple and Samsung both play hardball and as long as the consumers don’t mind, they crank it up a notch. IMHO Samsung went one step too far, because  requesting money for IP-infringement is one thing but trying to block me as a consumers to get what I want to buy is another thing. So my consequence is to ban Samsung for this threat they are posing on me. But this changes nothing about looking forward to visit S-Korea.

    • Damian

You have no clue what you’re talking about. I lived in Seoul for almost 5 years and from what I’ve experienced, there are foreign products everywhere. Especially cars… South Koreans have something to do with imported cars… It’s like their representation of their status by buying German cars. Anyways Ukanela, please think before you write such stupid comment like yours. Or better yet, go look at the map of two Koreas and make sure you’re not mixed up with the North. :)

From their iPad, ITC sends the reply of:

    “no”.

Go America!  But really, theoretically, if Samsung is successful in this legal move, they would be their own collateral damage since they supply so many of the iDevice components.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent. com

can you please move on to another playground with your cheap ad-comments? i hope you’re not under the impression that this would account for clever guerrilla marketing – cause it’s NOT!

It’s a shame that Apple products have to be imported in the first place. They are an American company. Stop sending jobs to other countries!!

    • Anonymous

Would you be willing to pay $1000 for the entry-level iPad?

      • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR6HpRLyzMY Walter Sobchak

        Yes

      • Anonymous

And you would choose the American-made $1000 iPad over the Chinese-made $500 Samsung Galaxy Tab?

      • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR6HpRLyzMY Walter Sobchak

First off we both know it is worth more than $1000.
Moreover, you must support your country in these tough economic times.

      • Anonymous

So you’re OK with Apple exploiting people in poorer countries while simultaneously hurting the American economy?

      • Anonymous

How is it exploiting people?  If they don’t want to make iPads, no one is making them do so.  You know what would really kill the American economy?  If Apple makes their iPads in the US, tries to sell them for $1000, and fails.  They would go under, and Samsung and Sony would once again take over the world.  lol

      • Anonymous

@Louis Except they wouldn’t need to make them $1000. That’s the point. Apple is making millions, if not billions from Ameicans and not reinvesting it back into the country. As far as exploitation goes.. yeah, I’m pretty sure they are. Why would people be jumping out of windows to kill themselves if they could just go find another job?

      • Brett Wie

Apple products are made in China as well. Just to throw it out there lol…

    • Guest

Why, do you want to pay double for your next iPad/iPhone?

      • Anonymous

The thing is that the iPad and iPhone are overpriced anyway. Apple could take a small hit, still make huge profits, keep them the same price, and pay Americans to make them.

      • Stints

Lol businesses should just pay everyone 100k salaries and give stuff away for free! Weeeee!

      • Anonymous

@Stints I didn’t say that. I’m just saying that being overly greedy is wrong. It wouldn’t hurt them to make a little less money and help their fellow Americans.

    • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

I would agree with this statement, but I wouldn’t want to pay a ridiculous amount for it if it was made in America.

You ever look at the price of a new GMC? Holy shit they are expensive, and you get what? Because some of the vehicles are still made in America. Hell, we have American car companies with factories everywhere but here.

Im sure that $700 phone cost less than $100 to make. But then you need to pay the developers for hardware, software, patents etc.

I think iPhone was invented by Koreans. Apple stole technology and design from Korean people. As far as I know, all culture and technologies in the world have been come from Korea.

    Apple, shame on you!!!!
