HP TouchPad hands-on!

Tablets

While our full review of the HP TouchPad is going up any minute, we wanted to give you guys a first impression overview of the first webOS tablet. From a hardware perspective, it’s actually a little shocking how the device looks and feels like an iPhone 3GS that’s gone under a rolling pin a couple times, or even a steamroller. From the glossy black plastic (which doesn’t help — the device feels pretty hollow, much like the 3GS) to even the placement of the power / lock / unlock and volume keys, this really is a tablet version of the iPhone 3GS casing-wise. While we appreciate the dual speakers on the HP TouchPad, they can get in the way when holding it one-handed. The tablet certainly has some decent specs, though we noticed a bunch of lag when using the device and jumping in and out of apps, scrolling through emails, zooming into webpages, and even flicking through contacts. All in all… well, check back for our review — it’s on the way! In the meantime, hit the break for our hands-on video.

i think WebOS should allow icons on homescreen, it’s really annoying having to launch the app menu everytime you want to use something you aint have docked

Can’t see any real reason to buy this.

I didn’t buy Pre linups because I was waiting for better hardware, I am not buying touchPad, because I am waiting for better Hardware again. The day Samsung start making these webOS devices, I am in it.

Palm now HP web os hardware has sucked from Pre to now. Do these designers think about using their own devices? Geez, just steal from Apple or Samsumg or HTC and put out a decent device.

Did they also make it to be able to pretend to be an ipod and hack itunes just like the FAILED Palm pre? That was a very bad decision by FAILED Palm which backfired on them. Now they no longer exist.

I will not buy this thick HP touchpad.
There are better tablets out there like the ipad 2 and Samsung galaxy tab.
This HP Touchpad is just too thick and heavy.

I’m going to take this one with a grain of salt.  Not everything BGR says is be all end all.  I’m going to check out other reviews from other review sites and compare notes.  If I get a chance, I’ll check one out in person.  If it is as bad as these initial impressions are, I will be highly disappointed in HP.  At least there might be Samsung right?

Is this article supposed to be about the Touchpad or the 3GS? You mentioned 3GS more than Touchpad…

The reviewer just has his Apple shades on, that’s all.

The reviewer gave an excellent and honest review. You are bitter because WebOS has failed so far.

What are the apps like for the webOS?

  • Gav67us

One of the photos has a box with Pre3 on it. Do you have an actual Pre3? That would be more interesting to me!

    • Gav67us

Scratch that. I see the Pre3. What about some hands on time comments about the pre3?

Anything that crosses ANY sort of Apple boundaries, the Apple fanboys cry foul. What about when the Playbook was released, which is almost an exact clone of webOS? Where were the pitch forks then?
