Windows Phone ‘Tango’ and ‘Apollo’ updates to follow Mango

mobile

Microsoft’s new Windows Phone Mango update is expected to begin rolling out this fall, but there are already reports that the company is working on the next updates, codenamed “Tango” and “Apollo.” DigiTimes reported on Tuesday that Compal Communications, which manufacturers devices for Acer and Nokia, recently inked a Microsoft deal confirming that it will build devices for Mango as well as the next-generation Tango update. Microsoft hasn’t discussed Tango yet, so it’s unclear what will be included or how big of a jump it will be from the long awaited Mango release. Reportedly, Tango will then be phased out in favor of a new “Apollo” OS, which we first heard about late last year.

I’m glad to hear that Microsoft already has plans for the next Windows Phone updates, and isn’t going to rest on its laurels for a while after Mango.  I look forward to seeing whether the future updates are major or minor, and what they might contain.  I have been enjoying my Windows Phone more than expected, but if Microsoft wants to get in there and compete legitimately they need to keep the pressure on, which they seem to be doing.  We shall see.

They would’ve thrown in “Jango” too but for the LucasFilm copyright.

thats a marketing issue, not an indictment of quality. On the other hand, Android has 35-40% of smartphones yet they arent nearly as thought out and polished as WP7 from a UI and usability standpoint.

Now I’m just waiting for the Rambo update.

That’s a lot cooler sounding than iOS 6 and iOS 7! ::end trolling:: for real though, I am so excited to see what they bring with each update. I’m already stoked for Mango as it is.

Who announces code names this far in advance?

Desperate and weak, Microsoft. We all know that Mango isn’t that impressive and still leaves WP7 far behind webOS, iOS, and Android, but you really should let your software do the talking. This sort of PR just feels sad.

Announces? PR?  This is a rumor based on a reported leak from a third-party.

And who announces codenames several releases in advance?  Android, for one.

Our thoughts are that they are announcing the next few versions, just like BB OS5, 6 & 7 – iOS5 & 6, Android 2.3.x, 3.x, and now Ice Cream Sandwich… They are just reminding people where they are going – and what to expect in the next 12-18 months.

No out of the norm PR, announcements or anything like that, it’s just a simple regurgitation of a Digitimes article speculating on a leak of names… They don’t want to call it Windows Phone 7.6 or 7.8, so they are calling them ‘production names’ like all MS software. Our question is, will one of these be the all powerful “Tablet Friendly” Windows 8?

So when you say rollout this fall you really mean updates will be released next March?
