T-Mobile announces myTouch 4G Slide

T-Mobile and HTC officially took the wraps off of the new myTouch 4G Slide on Tuesday, an Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) handset. As its name implies, the myTouch 4G Slide offers support for T-Mobile’s HSPA+ 4G network. We recently sat down with HTC for a preview of the phone before its launch, and the manufacturer said it spent a great deal of time tweaking the camera software so that the myTouch 4G Slide would offer the best photo performance of any phone HTC has launched. It has improved low-light performance, should have zero shutter lag, and more. We also appreciated the solid design of the myTouch 4G Slide during our demo, and liked that the keyboard was comfortable and didn’t add too much bulk to the phone when it was stored away. The phone runs HTC’s brand new Sense interface on top of a dual-core 1.2Ghz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, so everything was fluid and fast, too. The myTouch 4G Slide is equipped with a 3.7-inch WVGA display, 8-megapixel camera with 1080p video recording, has support for SWYPE, has Netflix software pre-installed, and more. T-Mobile has not announced a price just yet, but the myTouch 4G Slide will be available in July in khaki and black. Read on for the full press release.

More crap made to be sold by people who will claim it can do so much more than the iPhone except have apps you actually want and not force close or be left behind in the upgrade cycle. Great job tmobile.

I wonder which carrier is going to be the first to offer a 4.3″ slider.  It seems that 4″ is the norm.  Something iNorm girl says all the time.

Why can’t VZW have more than one phone with a keyboard?

  • serpentor

    Is that a typo?

    • serpentor

good to know my MT4G I have sitting in a drawer while I use my Nexus One probably won’t be seeing gingerbread or a refresh of T-Mobile’s terrible UI elements…on top of Sense 2.0…on top of Android…anytime soon.

    Here I come, Nexus Prime!

Looks like a souped up G2

Like the physical buttons on the front for home, menu, back & search/”genius”.  The capacitive soft keys on the G2 are lame.

The keyboard looks pretty much identical to the G2 keyboard, this is not a good thing, you will be happy you have Swype because that keyboard is pretty awful.

Was not expecting a dual core, this is a nice surprise.

8MP camera with 1080p capability is not surprising but it’s nice all the same.  I think if the low light and no-lag capabilities of the camera are as advertised it will be great.

Of course Sense is the elephant in the room, bunch of battery hogging bloatware.

Having Netflix preinstalled (and no doubt not uninstallable) is not a good thing.  Netflix is a rather poorly behaved app, always running in the background even if you manually close it, another thing to drag your battery down.

We also don’t know if this will be rootable/romable, The gingerbread builds for the G2 (if you get a warranty replacement) are not rootable at this time.  HTC has said they will allow rooting in the future, but that announcement was made recently and they left themselves the out of “if the carriers allow it” so I’d say there is about a 90% chance that this one will be hard or impossible to root.  Especially since this is burdened with Sense it’s specs are irrelevant unless you can rip out the Sense and load a custom ROM on the thing.

My current 4G’s speaker phone is crap. The rest of the phone is a total love affair. We’re talking about a phone here folks, so shouldn’t the focus be on quality of sound transmission? That should be the #1 focus of any phone manufacturer. Once that goal is reached, bragging rights for other features could be pursued. It’s “like making the worlds snazziest shovel with so many features but does a poor job of digging a hole. Every phone review on the market should review a phone’s quality of sound first, then the gadgets. Anything less than that is simply sitting in the manufacture’s pocket- an attempt to get your own name into the limelight- poor reviews, and even poorer reporting. So bad speaker phone- bad review!

The mytouch4g came out in November its a decent phone running froyo would like to see an update to gingerbread.  If most people like me that bought a mytouch4g or HTC product and don’t see updates in a decent amount of time will most likely never buy that product again.
