Google+, Google’s answer to Facebook, is finally here [video]

General

Google on Tuesday finally took the wraps off of its answer to the social steamroller that is Facebook, and it’s called Google+. While Google has launched numerous social products in the past, Google+ is the Internet giant’s most comprehensive offering to date. It is largely an effort to play catch-up, of course — since Google has a lot of catching up to do — but the service also offers some nifty innovative elements that could appeal to users who navigate away from Facebook long enough to check it out. Key features include Circles, which allow you to group contacts together in various social circles and share things only with the particular circles you chose; Sparks, which are topics similar to Twitter hashtags; and Hangouts, which are video chat rooms. There is also a mobile element to Google+, and for the time being it focuses on text updates, photo and video sharing, and… you guessed it… location. Google+ is currently in private beta. A handful of videos covering the key elements of Google’s new service can be viewed below.

so now google is competing with BBM as well :D jeez

    • Gjiejgeige

how exactly are they competing with bbm??
      are u stupid??

      • Guest

BBM has such thing called BBGroups… what is basically circles … BBM was competing with Facebook for a long time… you can start with in game intergration… Trust me.. iPhone is not a threat to BlackBerry…

As for calling me stupid let me educate you: BBM is a social platform.

      • Gjiejgeige

nothing is a threat to BlackBerry
        BlackBerry > all

      • Anonymous

Wow Gjiejgeige…  You really “bleed” RIM…  You are a RIMMER to the end.  You will be like the captain of the titanic…  Stay until it sinks.  That’s quite a rim job man!  I am proud of your commitment to the cause, a lost cause, but a cause nonetheless…

      • QNX

BBM is the best.  If you disagree, you are wrong.

  • Gjiejgeige

first it was myspace, then facebook
but google+ will be a flop, no other social platform will or could replace facebook anytime soon
google itself will realize that when facebook will hit the 1 billion mark “soon”

    and well, google+ ???
almost pathetic to see this attempt to create a “social platform” called google+ which is supposed to rival facebook..

    • Guest

we live in the world of profit… Google doesnt make products that dont make money :D if it flops … its okie.. if not.. google will go back to be number1 service provider

    • Uncle C

      I disagree. See my post.

    • Anonymous

dude almost everyone online uses a google service.. and ALL the real people I know hate the Facebook equivalent to trolls; Psycho stalker chicks that think one-night stand is a synonym for relationship..

    • sirpaul

Totally agree. FB is my social home now. Switching and reuploading everything and etc.etc. would just….welll….suck! If they found a way to use the facebook download files and upload em to Google that would be interesting (you do know you can download all your fb content, right?).

  • http://profiles.google.com/lmayer67 Lee Mayer

First glance very interesting features.  Now if they would incorporate gmail so all inbound mail is made social via connection with a contact profile that would be awesome.

    • Anonymous

What!!  Where have you been….um…. google wave anybody.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

        wave sucks

  • Anonymous

google can easily win this, especially with the circles idea, if they put all the ‘simplified’ privacy settings on one page with no underhanded tricks a la facebook.

    • Gjiejgeige

      yea sure
google can “win” this…. this “race” against facebook (with 750million members)
sure, google will most likely, no.. absolutely win !

      /sarcasm

      • http://twitter.com/victors Victor

that’s what they said about myspace and friendster before that.  google is offering a social tool for the people closest to us.  i think that’s quite workable.  the goal isnt to replace facebook but to complement it.  and remember what facebook was first about?  colleges.  look at it now.  so, with this, complement at first with people closest to us.  and build from ground up a nice and organized network.  seems quite plausible.

      • Anonymous

yea because NOONE I know uses ANY Google services.. And everyone thinks it’s cool when coworkers, and older family members see your drunken friday night photography /s

    • Guest

WORD! number 1 issue with facebook is privacy… and as usual… last one to arrive at the end makes a better product!

    • Anonymous

How is circles any different than groups on Facebook. Reminds me of how google videos was suppose to kill YouTube and then google went out and brought them.

  • Adam Bullock

I really, really hate the name Google+.

There are some interesting ideas here. I’m just not entirely sure people are willing to jump ship from Facebook because let’s face it, we’re all on too many social networks as it already stands.

It may flop, but I’ll probably use it just for the hangout+ (or is it just hangout? I don’t know) feature of video chat among members of a particular circle.

    • Anonymous

We can’t question Google.  They know what they are doing…  Please support the troops at the Google Plex!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_24DC7DJIVFB367K5P2H6Y2Z7NI Shadow B

Wasn’t the product originally going to be called Google “Circles?” I seem to remember reading an article about that awhile back but can’t recall for sure.  I think Google+ is ok and I’m guessing they chose it so people would be forced to say “Google” every time they mentioned it, ensuring that others knew it was made by, uh, Google lol

      • Bullet Tooth Tony

Google+ is the name of the platform, if you will…. Circles is one of the services and/or functions of Google +….

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_24DC7DJIVFB367K5P2H6Y2Z7NI Shadow B

I know. I was asking if the ORIGINAL name for the platform was Circles, because I thought I read that somewhere.

    • Jim Davis

I’m pretty interested in the huddle feature.  That looks like it could make planning an outing fast and easy.

    • Anonymous

Thats the point I think why Google has a chance to succeed you just said you will use it for “Hangout” others will use it for other things and all of a sudden more feature that you like will appear and you will be “hooked” as long as they provide something people like or use they have a chance to break through the social “market”.

    • Uncle C

I’d rather the name google+ than some stupid name with an “r” at the end. GOOGLR or zogglr or some other nonsense that’s catchy but has no real meaning.

  • Anonymous

lol Look at all the Facebook whores squirming. Noooooo, dont take my Facebook away! Whatever #Twitter FTW! ;)

    • Gjiejgeige

i’ve got nothing against twitter, but why do you think twitter is better than facebook etc?
because you got no real friends and like to follow ur favorite celebrities?

      • Guest

Gjiejgeige you sound like a facebook fan boy… let me guess.. you will ditch your iphone for facebook phone as well?

      • Gjiejgeige

im not a facebook fan, i just think a social platform like facebook is enough
we dont need any more douchebags giving it a shot with their crappy shit

google+… seriously? wtf is that supposed to be
on top of it, i’d never use an iphone, im using a blackberry

      • Guest

i think facebook is crappy platform… and 1b users only proves that people know nothing about technology

      • Anonymous

Guest, Gjiejgeige is actually a RIMMER.  And you are right Gjiejgeige.  Why do we need more than one Facebook.  We (Google) will be the only one soon on everything technology.  There is no need for anyone else…  Sorry about the RIMMER’s course though.  Man, things were looking up for RIMMERS and now they don’t.  I am happy (or maybe relieved) I jumped off that ship to the Nirvana that’s Google a couple of years ago…  Otherwise I would be bleeding!!!!!

      • Anonymous

Gjiejgeige Why would you not want other companies to innovate and expand? It breeds competition and competition is good for the consumer. Seems like a silly thing to be mad about, if you don’t like it…don’t use it?

  • Guest

    what happened to Google’s Orcut?

      wave was a nice product…

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

yep for all 3 people that used it.

wave was a great set of tools… they just didn’t support it well or have a good plan for it.

It’s inevitable!  Facebook, like Apple, is now DEAD…  No one, and I mean, NO ONE, can compete with Google!  Why even try?  It’s obvious to us Goofans (aka Apple/Facebook/Microsoft/ET AL Haters) that Google will obtain (no, actually EARN) 100% share of every market they (we) are in!!!!!  PERIOD!

    • Anonymous

facebook/apple is dead?  you’re kidding right?  Google has a poor track record in this market segment.  they have a lot of work to do if this will work,

      • Anonymous

When it comes to Google and ANYONE who dares to compete against them (us) I am NEVER kiddin!  It’s obvious to me that Apple and Facebook are on their way out simply because we (Google) don’t like them and want in on their business.  Google’s a perfect company with perfect people and perfect products…  And they are all FREEEEEEEEE!  Can’t go wrong there!!!!!

    • Bullet Tooth Tony

I really do appreciate your humor… honestly.  Some people take it too seriously, which is precisely why it’s great still after all this time.

To give a more-level headed take on this… it very likely will provide an alternative… but not a replacement.  I doubt you’ll see all these 40-something women giving up their Bejeweled Blitz et al.

      • Anonymous

Humor?  I am not trying to be humorous.  I am trying to be a rabid fan!  An anti-Apple crusader.  My friends, fellow Goofans (aka Apple Haters), tell me I have to hate Apple and liking Apple is totally gay and for dumb people.  That said, I have to comply…  But never be humorous.  We don’t have much of a sense of humor.

  • Anonymous

10 years too late and crappy as ever. Pretty much sums up everything Google does.

  • Jpone7

I’ll be honest with you, no one is going to drop their facebook accounts at the sight of this right away. If google would be smart about this then they should take this idea and make it into a bbm for all android users. I guess it just makes more sense to me

    • http://www.twitter.com/slinky317 slinky317

People dropped their MySpace accounts when Facebook became big.  They just have to offer something intuitive and user friendly.

    • SeanPN777

No one? Really? I would disagree… I will dump my Facebook account the second I get the chance. I left Myspace years ago as it turned into a swirling screen of maniacal themes and rabid banner ads. I loved Facebook because they left me alone, it was plain, simple, clean. But they’re bastards that have gotten too big for their britches and they don’t respect their users. I went from being on it all day every day to only logging in maybe a couple dozen times this year. I hate them and as soon as a viable alternative becomes available, I’m gone ala Myspace.

Thank God Google gave up on Buzz… I looked into that for about 3 days and never returned. Google+ looks much more promising. Looking forward to it.

  • Uncle C

I for one am BLOWN AWAY. It looks amazing from the videos. I didn’t think google could pull off social networking with the minimalist design that they are known for. But it looks great so far. I can’t wait to try it.

However, I don’t think it’ll be a success unless they find a way to incorporate ALL of their services in it. And google has a lot of services so it would be great if they could get it done.

    • SeanPN777

Uncle C… I’m tracking with you. I think the clean layout is awesome. It’s what drew me to Facebook from Myspace. Integration of services is going to be a big player for sure, but I think they need to make sure they take care of protecting and respecting the privacy and wishes of it’s users. Facebook has been pretty vocal that they don’t give a damn. Guess we’ll see?

      • Uncle C

I have all my pictures on picasa and picasaweb. If my pictures can be shared with google+ without reuploading. Or somehow intergrading google voice or a million of their other services without compromising the experience of + this will really work. I’m rooting for them because google loves open source and so do i.

  • http://daveysmind.tumblr.com David M.D.

As I’ve been saying across the articles today, if this is even slightly integrated with Android (Huddle, Hangout, Instant Upload) this will make it a very big push. Then furthermore, if the Huddle and Hangout is integrated with Gtalk, that will make it a BBM/iMessage/Skype hybrid. It will be awesome.

I just hope they have this in mind also.

There are some interesting ideas here. @Nick, I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent. com

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

This is going to flop just like buzz.  People do not like switching.  And I’m sure most people are not looking to have another social network site when they already have everyone on facebook.  Believe it or not, everyone does not have a google account of some sort.

    • Booboolala2000

And Facebook doesn’t make money from ads?

    • Bullet Tooth Tony

So people don’t like switching?  So then…. explain how Myspace fits into your clearly bulletproof theory exactly, other than trying to deflect it away… because facebook existed as an invite-only service at first, to a college-only service after… to finally being opened up.  Myspace was hand over fist a larger service, and all of everyone’s friends were on it….. and people switched….

  • Anonymous

facebook is to social networking like google used to be for search, like all search engines failed against google all the social networking sites will fail to compete against facebook. 50 million a month growth rate is abnormal, phenomenal, astounding . Social media is not like search or a phone where you move on but tied to your social circle and the move to be a new platform is difficult unless facebook screws up rather badly.

  • http://twitter.com/MikeMike7 Michael Graziano

IMO, Google+ represents the natural evolution of social networking and, if executed with perfection, will cripple (and God-willing– destroy) Facebook, a la Facebook / Myspace.

Two reasons why: #1 Trust-We already trust Google w/ our sensitive data and have for long time. Confidential emails, credit cards, contacts, text messages, voice mails… the list goes on. And they’ve never given us a reason ( outside of the idiotic Buzz debacle ) that they weren’t worthy of it. But Facebook has… on many, separate, equally disturbing occasions. A company’s “personality” comes from its leadership, and Facebook is led by an egomaniacal, deceitful, slimy little thief who I wouldn’t trust to pick up my dry cleaning. Like many of my friends and family, I intentionally limit the amount of personal data that I share w/ Facebook b/c of that fact. Facebook knows the topmost layer of my personality and a sliver of what truly interests me.  Google, on the other hand, knows the real me — what I search the web for, who I talk to (Voice, Talk, Gmail), where I’m going (maps), what music I like. Everything. And i’m 100% cool with that. I don’t care if Facebook’s valuation is a hundred trillion cagillion dollars and God himself is the CEO, they’ll never have my trust.  Walk into a room and ask everyone there who’s felt deceived and/or betrayed by Facebook at one time or another. How many people do you think will raise their hands? I’m sure the percentage would be over 50%. That’s 50% of Facebook’s 1 killer feature, its user base, who would consider leaving, if the RIGHT service came along. Google+ has that potential to be that service. If they make migrating easy enough, people will come in droves. Look at Diaspora. Those kids raised hundreds of thousands of dollars with a terrible idea and three words”Facebook privacy policy”! That alone should illustrate how disgruntled many of Facebook’s users are.

#2 Android-Let’s be honest about something: Android’s social networking experience ( and I the term experience loosely) flat out sucks. It’s all 3rd party layers like Sense, Blur, and Touchwiz, that run on top of Android’s core, sucking up battery and getting in the way. Google+ can dramatically change that. Just take a second to think about how great a tightly integrated social networking system would be on Android, and you’ll be able to see how valuable Google+ can be. The possibilities are endless.

Another great thing about Google+ is that I’m sure they’ll make it available for other mobile platforms. So the choice won’t be iOS, WebOS, Blackberry,  or Android, it will be Google or Facebook. That’s a simple one for me.

Also, Android is starting to grow up in terms of UI, device integration and overall user experience. Since Larry Page took over for Schmidt as CEO, Google FINALLY seems to “get it”. I think he understands the value of an ecosystem and is guiding Google along that path. If they are able to harmoniously integrate Google+ into the Android  mobile / tablet / desktop / TV ecosystem, (like they’ve done w/ Android Market, Google Voice and Music Beta) , there will be absolutely NO REASON to use Facebook. Why would you want to?

    • AnonGuy

      You trust Google. I don’t.

Android battery life sucks stock. Tw and sense make it usable for a non geek consumer.

Giggle us incapable of integrating their products the way I.e. Microsoft has with windows live so Tue experience will still suck.

Install 15 apps on your phone then maybe you can get something done…

  • Stu Parker

So is this going to be stictly on Android and IOS Devices?  If so thats super stupid….
