Microsoft to unveil new Xbox at E3 2012

Exclusive

A source with knowledge of Microsoft’s plans within the company’s Entertainment and Devices Division has confirmed with BGR that Microsoft intends to unveil its next-generation Xbox console at E3 2012 next summer. The source is not aware of Microsoft’s launch plans for the new Xbox, which we are told has been in development since 2006. Microsoft has sold nearly 54.4 million Xbox 360 units since the console’s introduction in November 2005. The video game system is currently the ninth most popular gaming console of all time behind Nintendo’s original NES and just ahead of Sony’s PlayStation 3, which has sold 51 million units to date.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent. com

This feels like it should be more of a hardware refresh.  They just did that last year, but still failed to include BluRay.  The DVR is possible since they are inking deals to stream live local TV.

I have read statements that have said it will release as early as late 2012 to early 2013.  I have also heard tech blogs claiming 2015.  Here’s the small skinny:  They’re all full of crap.  Of course, with this many predictions, one of them are going to get it right.

There’s reason for the delay in that (as someone else mentioned) they can’t just crush their major developer titles set to release by releasing a new console, unless that console has full backwards compatibility.  History tells us that this is unlikely.  We may see some backwards compatibility, but it likely won’t be “full,” and Microsoft will likely continue their tradition of slow phase out.

There is also major reason for a push.  If Nintendo releases their new console in the coming year, and it turns out to be a powerhouse, game developers are going to be flooding over there to show off their new shiny games in true full 1080p.  This will leave the PS3 and XBox 360 looking like the left overs in a toy box.  Imagine if they came out with COD 5, Fable IV, or RDR 2 in full 1080p with expanded storage capabilities (assuming the next generation Nintendo has the means).  Who is going to be favoring the PS3 and XBox 360 anymore?  A few die hard fans, and those that can’t afford the upgrade, that’s who.

I suspect Microsoft and Sony’s hold out won’t last very long IF Nintendo truly corners the market in “next gen tech.”  But saying that, if Nintendo doesn’t get the base hardware correct, we could have a long wait before Sony or Microsoft makes that push, as they won’t feel any heat to move a new product with no competition.

So, if you’re anxious to get past the sub-720p and move on to the next level of game play and storage, hope that Nintendo succeeds big time in their upcoming console, because right now, Sony would rather focus on it’s infrastructure issues and damage control, and Microsoft is looking to bleed their 6 year console profit for as long as they can.  I suspect both are watching closely to see if the coming year forces them into a release.
