LulzSec says ‘bon voyage’ after 50-day hack fest

Security

The now infamous hacking team LulzSec recently announced that it was swabbing the decks of its “Lulz Boat” and closing up shop — for now. The group made its name after attacking a number of high visability targets recently, including Sony, the CIA’s website, and the U.S. Senate. It’s unclear if the group’s decision was made after its leader and chat logs were exposed, but the group makes a convincing argument that a 50-day hack-fest was planned the entire time. In its final press release, LulzSec said “Our planned 50 day cruise has expired, and we must now sail into the distance, leaving behind – we hope – inspiration, fear, denial, happiness, approval, disapproval, mockery, embarrassment, thoughtfulness, jealousy, hate, even love.” The letter, at times a bit awkward and out of character for the group, called on hackers to continue the fight against poor security in support of freedom of information. LulzSec — short for “Lulz Security” — confirmed it had a crew of six members and thanks its supporters, but we have a feeling we’ll hear more from the group in the future. Read on for the full release.

  35. Friends around the globe,
  36. We are Lulz Security, and this is our final release, as today marks something meaningful to us. 50 days ago, we set sail with our humble ship on an uneasy and brutal ocean: the Internet. The hate machine, the love machine, the machine powered by many machines. We are all part of it, helping it grow, and helping it grow on us.
  37. For the past 50 days we’ve been disrupting and exposing corporations, governments, often the general population itself, and quite possibly everything in between, just because we could. All to selflessly entertain others – vanity, fame, recognition, all of these things are shadowed by our desire for that which we all love. The raw, uninterrupted, chaotic thrill of entertainment and anarchy. It’s what we all crave, even the seemingly lifeless politicians and emotionless, middle-aged self-titled failures. You are not failures. You have not blown away. You can get what you want and you are worth having it, believe in yourself.
  38. While we are responsible for everything that The Lulz Boat is, we are not tied to this identity permanently. Behind this jolly visage of rainbows and top hats, we are people. People with a preference for music, a preference for food; we have varying taste in clothes and television, we are just like you. Even Hitler and Osama Bin Laden had these unique variations and style, and isn’t that interesting to know? The mediocre painter turned supervillain liked cats more than we did.
  39. Again, behind the mask, behind the insanity and mayhem, we truly believe in the AntiSec movement. We believe in it so strongly that we brought it back, much to the dismay of those looking for more anarchic lulz. We hope, wish, even beg, that the movement manifests itself into a revolution that can continue on without us. The support we’ve gathered for it in such a short space of time is truly overwhelming, and not to mention humbling. Please don’t stop. Together, united, we can stomp down our common oppressors and imbue ourselves with the power and freedom we deserve.
  40. So with those last thoughts, it’s time to say bon voyage. Our planned 50 day cruise has expired, and we must now sail into the distance, leaving behind – we hope – inspiration, fear, denial, happiness, approval, disapproval, mockery, embarrassment, thoughtfulness, jealousy, hate, even love. If anything, we hope we had a microscopic impact on someone, somewhere. Anywhere.
  41. Thank you for sailing with us. The breeze is fresh and the sun is setting, so now we head for the horizon.
  42. Let it flow…
  43. Lulz Security – our crew of six wishes you a happy 2011, and a shout-out to all of our battlefleet members and supporters across the globe

What a bunch of dorks. I’m sure they have the movie “Hackers” on infinite loop in the background.

I still think giving out information on US Border Patrol members was just stupid. Agree or disagree with the politics of immigration, posting that information could lead to more deaths specifically the people trying to protect these same douchers.

#1 – Showing that text in Arial means it doesn’t line up correctly, which means that the picture doesn’t up correctly. Just… just a thing.
#2 – It’s been quite the interesting ride.

The heat was ramping up and they got scared…..no one is “safe” when the government really comes after you.

+1. ya they prob realized they were about 2 poops away from getting caught. i’d be doing the same thing. get out before you really get embarrassed

    I keep reading “50 days”.

Wanabe group that is now scared. Sick of hearing about that crap anyway.

I don’t think they realized that VPNing and proxying up isn’t going to stop the CIA or Feds for very long.

    • just askin’

The silliness of assuming the NSA cannot completely record every packet that enters and exits thousands of websites at one time then crosscorrelate anything they want about those packets is…well…silly. These losers probably used a handful of sites to “hide” their origins. Good luck with that.

Exactly, you don’t want to muck with NSA.  I think they realized the heat was on, or at the very least was about to be on.  Smart to call it quits while you’re ahead.

From what read by the A-Team and Web Ninjas these ‘hackers’ were really just competent with Mysql injections and trolling for insecure sites. I read through some of the IRC logs and they were basically anon folks who wanted notoriety. The fact that the A-team could backtrace through all of the their proxies shows that no one is as anonymous as they think.

Taking all the debit card info they got and cashing out eh?
