Facebook hits 750 million users milestone

Software

Facebook now has 750 million monthly active users worldwide, TechCrunch reported on Friday. That’s incredible growth since our June 1st story, which suggested that the social network was closing in on 700,000,000 users worldwide. In that report, emerging markets showed the most growth —  Brazil’s user base jumped 11.4% in May alone — and the United States was the top country; U.S. users were responsible for 149.4 million Facebook accounts. Last July, Facebook announced that it had hit the 500 million user mark, but it hasn’t publicly revealed any figures since then. Facebook only measures active users and only counts those who have logged into the social network during the past 30 days.

Wow, I knew stupid people were around, but I didn’t know there were that many.

    • Gjiejgeige

you talking about people like you, who got no friends and are way too ugly to upload a pic of themselves onto facebook, and therefore dont use it?

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GP2WYAHXS6CRUREISWBGPUSUGE Michael

Or are you talking about someone like you that doesn’t realize there is a life out side of a virtual life.

Facebook is for people who have no social skills and want people to be involved with every little aspect of their lives. People do not care that you are petting your cat watching Animal Planet’s Worlds Funniest Animals. Nor we do care that you are setting naked in your recliner naked eating Cheetos watching WWE. Get a life go out and meet people, we don’t bite i promise. You can learn to actually throw a ball, or a Frisbee instead of posting shit online that no one cares about anyway.

Do me a favor look up on line, stats on how many post are replied to, and how many post are reposted.  It’s pretty dismal.

People say that TV killed the Radio Star.

        Facebook killed the Social Skills.

        /thread.

hey idiot, who the fuck talks about 24/7 facebook on the computer? im talking about fb on the smartphone, which is great
and of course, who the fuck cares wtf someone else is doing at the moment, i dont give a shit if you fucking watch a movie, or eat some cornflakes, only tards use facebook like that

non-tards use it to stay in touch with friends, use the messenger as well, it doesnt always have to be phonecall
nowadays we just need phone, sms, email, skype, fb etc to stay in touch

whoever uses facebook the way you described it, is a fkin faggot, i dont give a shit
so maybe you should realize that life is about meeting new people, staying in contact with them and making arrangements, meeting up with people etc
        for that, facebook is great
one of the many things..just like sms, skype, email, msn etc.. if you just wanna discuss something real fast, meet up or just wanna ask someone whats up

oh and, if you didnt notice already, fb is also great if you just want to meet up with someone for a nice fuck, or get to know some girls, its so simple and retarded, yet great

well, i guess.. some people would never get laid, or got no friends (sure, for those people facebook sucks)
        winning

“Facebook is for people who have no social skills and want people to be involved with every little aspect of their lives.”

Socially retarded people existed long before Facebook. If those people didn’t have Facebook today… they would still be sitting on AIM and reading people’s Away Messages all day.

For everyone else… Facebook is a valuable tool.

I could use regular e-mail to communicate within a group… use Flickr for my photos… or send handwritten event invitations through the mail.  OR…. I can do all that on Facebook.

You are so hung-up on the idea that Facebook is ruining interpersonal skills…. but you don’t realize that people ARE using Facebook for communication. It’s just online communication… like everything else today is moving online.

Facebook is not a replacement for a phone call or a face-to-face meeting.  The type of people you describe who sit on Facebook all day… well… they were messed up before Facebook. :)

Facebook is not a replacement for a lunch meeting… but Facebook can be used to arrange that lunch meeting. And sharing photos… and groups… and chat… and lots of other things.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GP2WYAHXS6CRUREISWBGPUSUGE Michael

@michaelscrip:disqus Facebook is an “valuable tool”. Give me one example. Please. Just one that that can be done on Facebook that cannot be done with any other means. You cannot. The thing is Facebook is a common meeting ground for people. That’s it. It is a social norm just like MySpace was before it. Facebook is a waste of time, and a downfall to the social interactions of today’s day and time.

@08a1cb8273348eec82de9e38586b4a8d:disqus you seem pretty angry. Damn that rap music. And all you are doing is proving your immaturity and ignorance in your cussing rampage. This is the internet you are proving nothing.

anyway i have no use for Facebook. as stated above i can do what ever i need to do to plan any events, get together or anything else i need to out side of Facebook.

And before you go preaching about meeting people. doing things, and hanging out. I am married, with a daughter. We have a group of about 15-22 people that we see on a weekly basis out side of our family that we do stuff with. From getting a group of guys together to play Halo reach on a LAN of about 3 units, to meeting up at our local Hofbrauhaus (newport KY) and throw back a few liters.

My phone has text messing, phone calls, GTalk, and e-mail pushed to it. If you cannot get to me on one of those means. Your SOL.

The other thing is there is a huge age gap. I’m assuming you guys are in College or High School. And it’s “socially cool” to have a Facebook account. I’m 28 years old. I’ve been work 40+hours a week since i got out of high school. In the real world, in the work place, Facebook is a mute aspect of life.

      • Michael Scrip

        @Michael

I never said Facebook does things that you cannot do anywhere else.  I already mentioned email, Flickr, AIM, etc. You could also throw in EVite or any other online service.

But you said it best yourself… Facebook is a common meeting ground.  It’s about convenience.

I could upload my photos to Flickr… then send an email to all my friends to tell them to go look at my photos… or send that link in an IM.

OR… I can post photos to Facebook.. and my friends are automatically notified via the News Feed or by photo tagging. It’s just one less step. And considering Facebook is the LARGEST photo-sharing site in the world… people obviously prefer using it over any other photo-sharing service. It’s about convenience.

You started your rant by saying Facebook is for people who have no social life and don’t go outside to meet people.

Explain to me how sending a message with Facebook is bad… but sending an email with GMail is good.  Or chatting on Facebook… vs chatting with GTalk.  Or using Facebook for photos vs using Flickr.  They are ALL online services.

Or don’t… you don’t have to say anything else.  I get it… you don’t like Facebook.

        But other people do.

Stop posting on the internet and go take care of your family.

I think most of the popular kids use facebook, so just because you don’t like it does not mean it is not a viable social tool.  People will be lazy with or without facebook and if you need to hate on something you don’t like, well you might want to go to the doctor to check out your stress level.

You actually remind me of some of my “friends” that need to post something on facebook that no one cares about, but does it to get attention…  This is coming from someone that has an active yahoo avatar, really?

    • sirpaul

Not everyone uses facebook to poke and post stupid status updates. For myself, it is incredibly useful because of the interaction I get with friends and classmates.

For example: because almost everyone has a facebook nowadays, creating a class group and getting everyone to join was relatively easy, and that group is now basically a hub for our class, used to share general info, past exams, solutions, create study groups, plan weekend events and even share the occasional funny joke.

Just because some use facebook simply to waste time doesn’t mean it’s not useful. It is a very easy and quick way to spread information to many people at once. Majority of people don’t check email more than twice a day, but check facebook every hour. Again, since so many people have it, it is much easier to just “Facebook” them the info instead. And group conversations in the inbox couldn’t get easier.

I never know how to feel about Facebook…

On the one hand it is a great tool that, when used properly can help bring people together easily who otherwise would not be able to communicate.  Distant relatives, long lost friends…people you don’t and can’t see daily, it gives you the opportunity to get to know each other.  Even if in some cases, who you add is done so only in a polite manner not to be rude.  I think Facebook is a great tool in that regard, and is an excellent platform.

Most of the 20, 30, 40, etc. year crowds seem to get a lot of productive use out of Facebook.

But then I see how people who grow up on it use it…..

Seeing kids who have grown up on it use it as a social crutch. I have a much much younger sister who barely started Junior High School (Yeah I call it Junior High School not Middle School wanna fight about it?) and observing her with her friends and how they “play”…is just so odd. There is absolutely no discussing among them.

I’ve seen her with maybe 5-6 different friends and their time together consists of talking AT each other what is happening on Facebook, who said what, and looking at which photos someone posted of themselves.

The photos are sad for another reason in that every photo I’ve ever been shown the person doesn’t have any hands because they are always taking the photo themselves.

But it’s just so odd, because they don’t have complete conversations if any.  They are friends for reasons I don’t even know…  They sit together, talk at each other about things and that is about it. This type of tool seems to have made this age group very self absorbed.

But I don’t know how accurate this is, after all this is my feeling only observing my little sister and her friends.  Maybe my little sister and her friends are just weirdos. Let’s hope so, because holy crap I don’t want the future to be like Idiocracy, shit I would kill myself.

      Welcome to Costco… I love you…

But seriously… I also worry about today’s youth not being able to have a real conversation or even being able to spell.  LOL, kthxbai, are all part of their vernacular.

But… as your lil sis gets older… there’s gonna be a point where she will want to spend time with real people and not just text on a phone.

It’s gonna be difficult to have a boyfriend and never see them in real life. Face-to-face communication is very important… it’s vital for all relationships.

Tosh.0 is incredibly popular, and Ow My Balls is a pretty decent description of some of his content. Also, I agree completely in your above post about facebook being a tool that is essentially flikr, gmail, and IM rolled into one.

Back to this post though… I was thinking the other day about an accidental positive with the internet. When gaming, for example, or when people communicate with each other on forums or on blogs, there is less concern for the race/ethnicity/gender/sexual orientation of the other person. Instead, depending on the intelligence level of the blog, people are ridiculed for a) fanboyism (consoles, politics, smartphones), b) spelling/grammar, c) HOPEFULLY the merit of their argument, instead of the perceived merit of the person.

So maybe the internet is moving us in a direction where people are actually judged by what they say.

Jackass 3d was the #1 movie for a couple of weeks, so technically “ow my balls” has already seen its meteoric rise.

Nowhere near where Google is.  Google has billions upon billions of users and lovers!!!!!  Facebook, and especially Apple, don’t have a prayer against the “plex” baby!  NOT ONE PRAYER!  Witness the birth of the Goofan (aka Facebook Hater) Nation!

FB getting bigger and bigger. @Rob, I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent. com
