Motorola confirms Verizon’s DROID BIONIC on schedule for summer launch

mobile

In April, Motorola announced that it was delaying its DROID BIONIC 4G LTE handset until the summer. The warmer months are finally upon us, but we still haven’t heard an update on when the BIONIC will make its much anticipated debut. The good news, however, is that Motorola Mobility’s official Twitter account recently confirmed that the phone is still on schedule for a summer launch. The tweet specifically said: “Hang tight, DROID Bionic is coming and slated for summer release. Our team is working on some new updates.” It is unclear what those updates are exactly, but we do know that the phone underwent a slight redesign. The DROID BIONIC will join the LG Revolution, Samsung DROID Charge, and the HTC ThunderBolt as Verizon’s first group of 4G LTE handsets.

If you pull this off Motorola, I’ll use my upgrade I was saving for the iPhone 4S/5 for the Bionic!

  • Mik693

I hope it launches after July 21st. , I’m eligible for my upgrade on the 21st. , hopefully i could also be grandfathered in on the unlimited data plan .

According to a previous BGR post, existing unlimited data users will be grandfathered in.  But you’ll have to go tiered if you add tethering, etc.

hopefully, it is still ambiguous on what they meant when they said that you cannot upgrade from a feature phone to smart phone after 7/7/11 and get the unlimited plan. but i hope that means existing smartphone customers get to upgrade sometime later than the tiered date.

Hard to tell from the blurry pics, but the “slight redesign” doesn’t look too sexy.  I loved the original Droid’s industrial design, but Motorola seemed to go downhill after that.  I’m looking forward to the LTE Droid’s specs, hope it looks decent too.

booze rob those are my feelings exactly i am praying for a 7/7/11 launch but it is looking very grim

Well I can’t hang on because I need unlimited data so droid x2 it is tomorrow.

Buy someones old smart phone out right and get the data plan.  Don’t waste your upgrade.

Well thanks for the advice but I’ve heard that 4g access isn’t good in my suburban area thus mostly a battery drain anyways. And most of my time is spent on wifi.

If you absolutely have to by a phone by July 7th before the tiered data pricing, wait until July 6th… then you have an extra 14 days to return it for another phone. It still might not be enough time for the Bionic, but it buys a little more time and, imo, is worth the gamble.

…. have to *BUY* a phone by ….
      ;-)

I think part of the reason they’re delaying it is to keep people from doing that :-/

A couple months back I decided to test out the iphone… The next day I traded it in for the Thunderbolt which I went to return 2 weeks later not realizing I only had two weeks from the original phone purchase so I was a day late and now stuck with the Thunderbolt :-(

“Summer” could also mean mid September, so I wouldn’t hold your breath.

You might wanna take a pregnancy test cuz you’re late.

Who cares at this point as I am sure it will have the same crappy battery life that the Thunderbolt (which I returned) had? I love the Android platform but I think it suffers across the board with poor battery on most of the phones. I will stick with the iPhone till this issue is fixed.

the world yawns at a played out  phone from 2007…god all you ifags love apple so much its stupid….you pay for everything and to customize anything plug it into itunes….there is no drug that is available that can make you this blind…androids faults are a bi-product of its mission…to make things free and open to people….que some random ifag to go off about buggy or glitchy os….really its so played out, move on…

It’s a good thing that so called played out phone came out in 2007 huh. You would still be jerking off to a BB or palm a pos. And yes android is buggy and glitchy we all know this already. But it’s better than what you had before 2007. Grow up.

Of course it will arrive in summer, conveniently after Verizon has axed its unlimited data plan.  As the phones continue to get better and better, I fully expect rates to continue to increase.  Count me out.

  • john smithoson

well wont be getting it unless the boot-loader is unlocked, which knowing Motorola (even though they said their phones would be unlocked) and Verizon probable not going to happen.

Of course it will arrive in summer. @Brad, I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, LiveCent. com

Simply put…THIS is my next phone…leaving by beloved Nextel (which is now super sucky Sprint) for the virtually everywhere Verizon…and I’ll be willing to pay the $199.99 or even $249.99 for this phone…it simply looks awesome.  Plus, I’ve never had a phone built by Motorola that has ever failed.

Add to the fact that this phone  (like apparently all future Moto phones) will be able to be used as a laptop…I’m so getting this!  Now, if I only had the money (and an honest to good reason) to buy the Moto Zoom.

Read up on the Atrix before you start celebrating how you can dock your phone and turn it into a laptop.

i am thinking that verizon is expecting the bionic to come out by the 7th because they will see an increase in sales i think Verizon knows more about the release date and it makes sense when you see how hard they are trying to push people to get a plan before the 7th
