HP to launch 7-inch tablet in August according to report

Tablets

Hewlett-Packard will follow up its TouchPad launch next month with the release of an unannounced 7-inch tablet in August, Taiwan Economic News reported on Friday. Citing information from an Inventec Corp. subcontractor, the Taiwanese manufacturer is said to have received a healthy number of tablet orders from HP. The Palo Alto-based company has reportedly ordered between 400,000 and 450,000 tablets per month from Inventec, which also manufactures notebook computers for HP. The source claimed that HP’s orders are comprised of both the 9.7-inch TouchPad set to launch on July 1st, and a second, unannounced tablet that will feature a 7-inch display, though no additional details surrounding the smaller tablet model were reported. An unnamed industry insider estimates that Inventec will build and ship 3 million tablets for HP in 2011.

That would be the device code-named “Opal.”  Nice to see that HP is continuing to focus on the long-term.

HP’s marketing is screwy.  First, they announce the touchpad 6 months before its release date.  Now, they will announce a tablet weeks before it goes on sale.  What’s up HP?

      what are you talking about?

I believe he is saying they announced the touch pad 6 months ago but now they are announcing a 7″ tablet weeks before it’s release. Yes I realize the 7″ tab is just a report and not anything official from HP

Such a shame. The money wasted on all these failed tablets could have fed so many hungry people. True story™©®

Typical iHipster thing to say don’t you think.

U sir should be ashamed of yourself. I merely stated that there are
hungry people who could have benefited from the money wasted on
research and development on the numerous number of failed tablets.
        Have some compassion. True story™©®

I agree with you, all this money wasted on research for these tablets and all your poor hillbilly relatives are starving and destitute. The world needs more compassion, understanding, and benevolence in dealing with your backwoods brood. But, alas, there’s always welfare and Section 8 so, they should be ok.

Oh Yes u make me so angry. Hey seriously. No bullshit. Ur attempts at humor
are rather pathetic. Honestly now, when u r in a group of people do you feel
awkward? Do u struggle while u wait for the perfect moment to jump in with a
joke that u have been waiting to use all day or does the conversation and
humor just come naturally? My bet is u struggle. Nothing wrong with it. I
can tell u r a fairly intelligent person. U just don’t have a very good
sense of humor. Keep trying tho bub. One day it will lead to sex with a
person whose not a prostitute. True story™®©

And if you want to beat on that drum how many people could Apple feed if they would stop suing everyone and speed their legal fees on the homeless and hungry.

I’m excited to see how this tablet turns out. I really like WebOS, but i don’t like their phones. If they had a pure touch screen phone I think I’d be all over it. IMHO WebOS was made for a tablet and adopted to a phone….

Anyway this is the one I’ve been eying since Research in Backwards Motion failed with the Playbook.

We already knew about this. before the touchpad was announced there were plenty of rumors about 2 hp tablets. this would be the “Opal” tablet…so old news.

Please do it with a little less bezel than the Playbook.

    • Evert Tan

The large bezel on the playbook is needed due to a part of it being touch sensitive (which lets it perform gestures to minimize apps, access options, etc).  Plus you need bezel room on top of that so you can comfortably hold the device without having our fingers activating anything.  It is far from pretty, but very, very functional.
