T-Mobile USA now home to over 1 million iPhones

mobile

T-Mobile USA has gone on record in stating that its network is now home to more than 1 million unlocked Apple iPhones. While the figure is not incredibly surprising considering the massive popularity of Apple’s smartphone line, it certainly reaffirms the fact that T-Mobile subscribers are itching for an iOS option. Though the overwhelming bulk of iPhones being used on T-Mobile’s network are 3G and 3GS models, unnamed T-Mobile spokespeople also confirmed that the carrier has micro-SIMs in development. For the time being, iPhone 4 owners who want to use their devices on T-Mobile’s network have to perform a bit of surgery on their T-Mobile SIM cards. Of course, we doubt the carrier would adopt micro-SIM cards without actually selling a device that can make use of them, so this little snippet may add a bit more credence to rumors of a T-Mobile-ready iPhone 5 that may launch in August or September.

No big deal! This is just like the BILLIONS of DROID users bring their atrixs over to tmobile as well….oh wait they don’t do that because no one actually wants a POS DROID.

    • Sin City

So instead of grasping your own identity, you decided that I’ll just do what Norm does with Apple?  That was so Android Notification Style, iBBMessage of you.

Do you think there is more than one Norm?

Dude, I’m an Apple fanboy as much as the next guy, but that’s a dumb argument. Android users don’t have to unlock their phones and port them over because they’re already available on every carrier.

      • Chrisvaios

Really? So tell me where I can get my hands on a Droid X for T-Mobile? Or a Atrix for Verizon?

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

Obviously he meant that you can switch carriers and get a comparable Android device where ever you go.  Sure you may not get the exact same one but the difference can be minimal and makes it easy to switch carriers.  Whereas people that want to continue to use iPhones don’t have as much choice. I believe that was the point he was trying to make.

Why the hell do you keep calling Android “Droid?”

    • Jbklyn11226

Then how do u explain Android’s dominance in market share? Even with the great sales of iPhones, ios was only at about 27% while Android was at about 36% if remember correctly.

    • Jbklyn11226

If no ones wants them then y is Android’s market share 52% compared to ios’ 29%. Those numbers indicate to me that quite alot of people want “droids” as u call them.

I thought the number of iPhones on Tmo would be higher, but there you go… It really won’t matter once the merger is official.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

It’s probably used to be higher but many probably eventually left for AT&T and especially VZW.

More proof that apple will win the market share war. These unlocked Tmo iPhone 4s are like the paratroopers establishing a foothold. The real invasion begins with the iPhone 5. True story ™©®

iPhone 5 and all of the hardware that’s already been done? iPhone 5 is barely to keeping up with phones released this year. Think about where Android will be by the time your precious iPhone 5 is released.

i think its only a million because tmobile users got tired of using edge and switched to att or verizon

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

Yeah that’s probably true.  There were probably a lot more in the previous couple years.  And with Verizon and AT&T reporting the iPhone to be their best selling phones and VZW gaining all those customers last quarter, I’d think a lot were defects from Sprint and TMO who wanted and iPhone but refused AT&T.

It’s kinda’ funny that after paying for an unlocked version of their beloved tAmpon, or paying the unlocking fees (since, most of them couldn’t figure it out on their own, anyway), or JailKracking their crAppware that, they’re all going to wind up on AT&Trash anyway!!!!

Are you upset that people rather pay a boatload for an unlocked iPhone and slow data speeds that to get an Android phone for under 200 with “4G” speeds?  That picture tells a lot.  Just wondering your thoughts?  And can you make it comprehensible and not the blithering, moronic, repetitive trash that shows you have no life?

      • Anonymous

However could you infer from my comment that I am even in the least bit, as you say, upset? Quite the contrary my dear fellow, I am laughing rather hysterically; HA!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

A lot of people hide anger with laughter. And insults others because of their own insecurities.  You know what they say: hurt people, hurt people. Just saying.

      • Eric Walker

I got a feeling you typed that comment on your iPhone or iPad.

    • Chut Pata

Dude.  My n14 year old nephew was able to jailbreak the iPhone with the help of a youtube video.  He and his friends do not have any type of plan.  They talk via different softphone softwares via WiFi.  What planet do you live?  Only an idiot would pay the jailbreak fee, and the idiots mostly went for regular plan.

  • Dash305

That’s more than one million iPhone users still using a shitty edge connection… These are the same people that ask “How do I get to such and such place?”.. “When did (insert topic) take place?”… How McGee is this item at another location?”… “What time does the movie start?”.. “Where can I find a (insert type of food) restaurant? “… all the while they have an iPhone in there hands that can answer all of these questions…. – “A smartphone is only as smart as it’s user” – ;)

    • DT

My take on this, is WOW there are a million people willing to put up with shitty Edge data and most likely outdated software since upgrading will kill their unlock, because AT&T is such an unfavorable alternative.
That should be introduced into evidence to the merger/acquisition talk how bad the deal will be for consumers.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

Not just that AT&T is an unfavorable alternative because of the network and customer service (because it is for many) but because of the price of the AT&T.   Many TMO customers would gladly go to AT&T for an iPhone if the price was the same.  And of course many of them would not for other reasons.  But I’d guess  the former would be more.  A lot of people are on TMO because it’s the budget carrier with no credit checks.

      • Anonymous

Also, you can turn off data on T-Mobile and only pay for voice. I know a lot of people who do that.

      • Anonymous

And what’s your excuse for Verizon. Can’t wait for your answer on this one.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

This is a testament to how many people like the iPhone that they are willing to put up with such slow data speeds to have one and pay a huge amount of money for a non-contract iPhone to unlock (or already unlocked)  when TMO has arguable the best lineup of Android phones.  I’ve said it many times once iPhone hits all carriers, the amount of users of 1 single device will be incredible.

When I was on TMO for a short stint, I refused to use an iPhone because of the slow data speeds.  Although, I think the iPhone is the best overall phone, I could not live with the speed.  I think it shows that many people still don’t care about data speeds if they have the device and price they want.

    • Anonymous

To be fair, a LOT of people I know have iPhones on T-Mobile because they DON’T want data… at all. The real cost of owning an iPhone is the data plan, and many don’t want to have to pay it, as they’re fine operating over WiFi at home or work.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

I agree with that as well.  And I know many people were able to have full data features with a cheap data plan that was like 10 or 15 bucks.  I do agree with that but if avoiding data costs were the #1 reason, I would argue that they can buy any Android device unlocked or from somewhere other than TMO and a lot chearper and use it the same way they do with the iPhone, wifi-only.  But they don’t because they want the iPhone.

    • failboat

You could’ve said this with max two sentences instead of repeating the same thing as though it’d have now impact.

      Am I trolling?

  • Jtam2

Count me and my wife as 2 of the million.  I jailbroke/unlocked a pair of used 3GSs which we bought from craigslist for $300 each last year.  We are on the Even More Plus family plan with 1500 minutes, unlimited data (I know, I know…EDGE), and unlimited text (free apps) for $80 a month.

Yes it’s slow data but we are in range of wifi almost all the time.  A comparable plan on Verizon or AT&T would cost at least $150/month.  So we save $70/month = $1680 over a 2 year contract.

I’m wondering if we should upgrade to Verizon before they get rid of the unlimited data…

Micro-SIMS in development?  I ‘developed’ my T-Mo microsim with a pair of scissors.

  • Chut Pata

I thought the figure was much more than that, probably they are not including pay as you go.  I know a lot many people who got iPhones from somewhere, jail broke it, and then put in a $100 PAYG card good for 1 year and 1000 minutes, and gave them to their kids on strict instructions to use it only with a WiFi.

  • Alexander530

I don’t think that TMobil is aware of this yet. With this huge number, they should try to find a way to make sending and receiving MMS work for iphone users with TMobil.

    • Anonymous

MMS works just fine on my iPhone 4 with T-Mobile.  You just need to proper APN settings.

I’m getting close to switching over to TMO now that I am (finally) out of ATT contract in order to reduce my monthly bill. Sure, TMO data will be “slower” on iPhone, but in actuality, because ATT 3G data is all but unusable in NYC, I’ll likely end up better off than I am now…which is basically unable to use data at all (unless on WiFi, which in NYC I am about 99% reliant on). As it stands, I pay $15 per month for AT&T data that I basically cannot use due to AT&T’s atrocious network here.

The thing holding me back is the merger – how badly is ATT going to muck up TMO’s service/reliability? This is a big ? mark.

  • Anonymous

    I have one (3GS).

IMO micro-SIM and fixing the bugs in the baseband (that allowed the unlock) are mistakes by Apple.
