Microsoft vs. Apple infographic details rivalry from inception to global domination [updated]

Business

In the world of computing, no two companies have more history than Microsoft and Apple. In fact, the companys’ history is 10,124 pixels tall. From modest beginnings to IPOs, and later to global domination, Microsoft and Apple are largely responsible for computers as we know them today. Microsoft concentrated on software early and now owns the lion’s share of the global PC market, and more recently, Apple looked to mobile computing to revitalize its business and its market cap. Of course from an investor’s perspective, the stock chart at the bottom says it all, but as is remarkably evident in looking over the meandering paths these two tech titans have taken, no one knows what the future might hold. The full, extremely large infographic can be found after the break.

This infographic has been updated by its creator and the updated version is now found below.

well, I guess posting links requires approval?  Anyways if anyone wants to see how much more money you have have made investing in MSFT instead of AAPL it’s quite simple to see.  Just go to google finance, put in MSFT, you’ll get a really nice graph with a nice little box at the top to add AAPL to compare.  Looks cool?  Now just click the all time which will show you the historical chart for all time of both AAPL and MSFT. what? MSFT made 24000% since going publc and AAPL only made me 10000%?  Now what should you take away from this? you should have bought them both! but you would have definitely gotten much richer off MSFT especially if you sold when it was up 50000%!

Uh where did you get those mobile OS market share percentages?!?! i HIGHLY doubt microsoft still has 26% of the mobile market!

Nice and misleading graph and numbers!  Graph the corporate valuation instead…  Looks quite a bit different!

I am sure this took a lot of work to create, but unfortunately it’s useless. Interesting timeline of events. That’s about it. Dr. Nir Hus MD., PhD.

further proof that infographics are the most stupid way to present information ever invented.

graphics artists of the world:  stop trying to illustrate data.  you suck at it.  go back to making things shiny and pretty.

Fucking idiot doesn’t know what a stock split is.  That graph is completely inaccurate and pointless.  No offense, pardon my french.

exactly !!!!!  but this is iBGR so what do you expect

  • Jiro

Seriously?  No inclusion of stock splits?  If I had invested in Microsoft stock at the beginning I’d be a rich man now.  This graphic suggests I would have lost money.

Apple is color-coded as blue in the time line, red in the stock chart, and either brown or orange in the pie chart. Tilted 3D pie charts visually skew data comparisons. Round cartoon callouts on the left, rectangular lined callouts on the right. This chart uses 10 different fonts.  Apple logo utilized is from over ten years ago. The Windows logo is not Microsoft Corp logo. Event info boxes’ obvious anti-Microsoft tone inhibits credibility of data.

    Carry on.

Maybe some of you should learn more about investing before you start spouting your ignorance online. Hate to tell every windows lover out there but Apple has become a larger tech company and if they keep innovating it will stay that way. MS needs to step up their game and start focusing on being better and first instead of being behind the ball on so many things.

Hell XBL is so bad they now have to shove it onto your phone because you might want to see who invited you to a game while you where at work.

If Microsoft was behind the ball in so many things, then why is their XP for example still OUTSELLING ALL COPIES OF OSX COMBINED?

When you have NO competition as Apple does, your sales will look great.

If Microsoft does what Apple is doing now, then all you Apple fans would be crying monopoly.

Why can Apple get away with it then?
