Mozilla launches Firefox 5 with ‘even more awesomeness’

Software

Mozilla on Tuesday finally issued the new public release version of its wildly popular Web browser, Firefox. Version 5 of Firefox wasn’t met with quite the same fanfare as Firefox 4, but the update is a major one nonetheless. Mozilla bills its new browser as being faster than ever with “even more awesomeness,” and we can’t say we disagree. Firefox 5 has received massive improvements aimed at providing speedier performance, and the UI has been redesigned and improved as well. Firefox’s “do not track” feature also works across mobile and desktop platforms now, and Mozilla has improved support for MathML, HTML 5, XHR, and SMIL as well. Other areas targeted by the new build include CSS animation and JavaScript support, and Mozilla has promised more frequent updates so more new features shouldn’t be far off. According to Net Applications, Mozilla’s Firefox browser was used by 21.71% of the global market in May, second only to Internet Explorer’s 54.27% share. Chrome, Safari and Opera rounded out the top-5 with 12.52%, 7.28% and 2.03%, respectively.

Every time you update Firefox, half of your extensions stop working. That’s if the update will even install. I think I’ll stick with Chrome.

yeah. Chrome has won me over. I was going to switch to it if Mozilla on android was good, but it turns out that its the ONLY Android browser that doesn’t have flash. Well, except opera mini. But that’s excusable because of its server side nature. I hate Firefox. I will consider it again when they actually give me a good Mobile browser. The bookmark syncing will be awesome.

Gee, thanks for letting me know. I will sleep better at night knowing you are happy.

Chrome is still better. Firefox 5 still gives me beachballs on my Macbook with an SSD. Firefox is dead to me!

    WAKE UP, FIREFOX!!

Chrome uses way more memory than the fox.

I’ve been using Chrome for a year or so now and recently tried to switch back to Firefox. The amount of random ads on sites made me sick. Worked good otherwise though, but for now I’ll stick with Chrome.

Firefox used to bring my computer to a crawl begging , pleading with me to be restarted.
I restarted installed Chrome and Firefox was relegated to the likes of the Old Yankee stadium.

Chrome on Windows and Linux and Safari on OSX.  Quit using firefox 3 or 4 years ago.

    Juse tested FireFox 5.0 quickley.
Seems OK, but still no RSS icon since Firefox version 3.5
Now you upgrade the major version number every 6 weeks or so means that the first version was out on 24/11/2010! (6 weeks x 5 versions)

Still o universal search/address bar. Fail Firefox. I stopped using you since 3.0 and your hourly crashing. Chrome is the only browser worth talking about.

    firefox is the boss
as it has huge number of supported add-ons and plugins, it’s customizable so
that makes it great. Firefox 4 used to be sluggish after prolonged usage,
that problem is fixed so there is no reason to not choose firefox 5.
