Best Buy takes on Apple, Amazon with new cloud music service

mobile

Best Buy announced “Music Cloud” on Wednesday, a new service that will compete directly with other cloud-based music services from Apple, Amazon, and Google. Best Buy Music Cloud is powered by Play Anywhere and, after a quick sign-up process, users can download the application to their Mac or PC, as well as to an iPhone, Android device or BlackBerry. Once the respective applications are installed, Music Cloud allows you to stream tunes or cache them for offline playback. The free package allows access to the Best Buy Web player only, so you’ll need to cough up $4 per month for the premium package to access your tunes wherever you go.

Ok I understand an app for iPhone and DROID, but why Blackberry? No one uses those anymore?

So true! BB is dead! Plus, developers say over & over that BBs SDK is horrible. How does BB expect to keep up with competition if they can’t even create tools to help software developers invest in their platform?! They seem real clueless at present. Anyone creating more content for this “titanic” of a company clearly can’t see the writing on the wall. Sad!

Why would I pick this over Audiogalaxy?

Why would you pick this over anything? $4 a month for a service that every other competitor offers for free??

I misread it; thought it operated like Audiogalaxy in that it streams the music off of your computer.

Google Music is eventually going to be pay, And I think you’re going to have to give Apple some money to match your tracks if what you don’t have is on their servers. But… pay from the jump? I wouldn’t pay $48/yr to Best Buy for… anything.

They’re best for spur-of-the-moment purchases of movies or for buying console games. That’s… about it.

Only difference is iCloud isn’t intended to stream your music persay. But even though you can download tracks to your iPhone it would be a major pita if they don’t allow to do it by playlists (which I haven’t seen or heard, yet), like all the other services allow.

Dead on arrival.  You have to wonder what best Buy is thinking.

CD’s take up a lot store space. people go buy a cd that is a loss leader and then might buy a high margin accessory.

using google music/itunes means they might not make it into a best buy store at all

2GB of data per month max = no cloud music for me

So just cache it on your phone, but make sure it’s over wifi.

Who really wants ‘Worst Buy’ cloud service?   Was their a demand for it???  Do they really think that can even compete with the other Big names?   I still don’t really get this wrote Cloud streaming anyway.  Why not just have my Music on my device???  Maybe if you had Unlimited Data, sure, but I’d rather use that for streaming other things like Pandora, Slacker, XM Radio, or just getting Data.  Why not save my Data Cap and keep my Music with me.  Besides 3G or 4G isn’t everywhere.
