Amazon’s tablets could launch in August-September time frame

mobile

According to DigiTimes, Amazon’s rumored Android tablets could launch as soon as this August or September. The online retail giant has a global sales target of 4 million units, with 700,000-800,000 units shipping monthly, and it hopes to get its products in customer hands during the peak sales period of the year — just before Thanksgiving and the holidays. We’ve reported exclusively that Amazon will launch the dual-core “Coyote” and quad-core “Hollywood” tablets sometime this year, and early reports suggested the tablets are already in the manufacturing stage. Reportedly, Amazon has contracted Texas Instruments, Wintek, ILI Technology, and Quanta Computer for parts and assembly. It’s been widely expected that Amazon will launch a streaming movie service on its tablets, too.

As long as Amazon didn’t drop the ball on the hardware, they ought to be able to pull this off and make a real competitive product.  Like game console vendors, they don’t have to make as much on the tablet hardware because they know you will (most likely) purchase your Apps from their store.  Having two (3 if you count Amazon media) revenue streams is the key.  That is something that Motorola, HTC, Samsung and all of the other Android tablet manufactures do NOT have.  A complete ecosystem.

NOTE:  4 streams if you count hardware accessories (docks, radios, covers, etc.).

Matte screen, amazon. MATTE, you know, for READING.

All the current Android tablets. And I mean ALL are useless for reading with their ultra-glossy displays.

Can’t be used outside or in reflections and reading from them for long hours is a real strain.

Why does not a single tablet manufacturer understand this?

Hopefully at least the biggest book seller in the world understands this.

And yes, it is possible to do a matte or semi-matte display without having too much fiction on it.

First – tablet manufacturers are not manufacturing ereaders, they’re making tablets that you can spend some time reading on.

Second, I’ve personally found no problem reading books on the glossy screens. Which means little, except to say that for everyone of your opinion there’s at least one person with a different opinion — and so tablets will still sell, even to people who will use them primarily for books ;)

Congrats to amazon entering the ipad market. Soon to be the tablet market when some real competition comes. It took four years for the iphone to get it. So Apple ipad will see some around 2014 or so . True story

So does this mean we can expect an official announcement from Bezos fairly soon?

I almost bought an Eee Pad Transformer, but when I discovered that Amazon was prepping an Android tablet, I decided to hold off for a bit.

I’m really excited about the potential of this device. Amazon obviously has a ton of content, so as long as they nail the hardware, this could be something really special.

That is not a flattering picture.

I really needed to see a closeup of Bezos’ close shave on the announcement of their tablets… I wonder if he uses an electric or a manual razor shaver?
