Apple may have iOS powered TV planned for fall launch

General

Apple may have an iOS powered TV in the works. According to Daily Tech, one former Apple executive recently said that customers will soon be able to “go into an Apple retail store and be able to walk out with a TV. It’s perfect.” Apple won’t build the televisions itself, though. Instead a manufacturer like Samsung may be behind the product. The former exec also said that the Cupertino-based firm will “blow Netflix and all those other guys away,” so we presume there’s a connected aspect that will allow users to access iTunes content in a manner similar to the current Apple TV product. Apple has been rumored to be working on a connected television numerous times in the past, though obviously nothing has materialized to date.

been waiting for this for a looooong time.  just hope they’re working on a slick interface.  frontrow just ain’t cutting it anymore.

    • Anonymous

err. front row?  who uses that?

      • Anonymous

it’s all apple has in terms of an HTPC interface.  and it sucks.  just hoping they’re cooking up something Plex-like

Blow Netflix away by allowing me to buy movies from iTunes? No thanks

    • Jasonlee

Netflix is great but damn studios only give old movies. I can’t keep watching tv from the 80s l

So when will my Tv stop getting updates and I have to go out and buy revision 2?

    • Anonymous

      wow that was good… +1

You’d also have to buy $29.95 adapters to make it work with your existing A/V equipment.

at least i got over 20 vaulable and free updates for my iphone 3g for almost 3 years. for my TV i never got a single update and for my f..n samsung andoid i didnt get anything too. So guess what – i still prefer the first option!

  • Guest

    It *IS* already iOS ‘powered.

The rumor is referring to an actual TV, which makes no sense.

      Just update the AppleTV.

  • Homer

Seeing that they charge about double for computers I can only imagine what they’ll charge for tvs… Probably a good $6,000 for a 52″ with respectable specs and adequate inputs… Sorry Apple, your logo on my television set isn’t THAT important.

    • Anonymous

Actually they will probably just strip the Samsung logo from a LED Sammy tv and put the Apple on it and then sue Samsung.

      • Anonymous

pretty soon sammy will own apple, jobs when he was  with atari made same mistake, now i hear they want all suppliers to take 10% less for supplies

      • http://twitter.com/jj_hh1 J Hamburg

More probable that they won’t contract Samy-Copy anymore in the near future so the koreans need to use their own brains to invent. Only then they would re-earn a place on my options list.

    • serpentor

We’re  talking about Apple users here. They’ll be lining up a week in advance for this even at double the price.

      • His Shadow

        Idiot.

  • http://profiles.google.com/jeff.wilson Jeff Wilson

Apple TV + Bose = highest cost, lowest performing home theater setup ever.

Just kidding. I think it’s actually a good idea and this fits in with Steve’s cloud strategy. The TV would just be another client for iCloud and iTunes.

  • Anonymous

Will they call it iTV?  hah!

All in all, if they can make it work it might be a cool product.  Though, me personally, i still prefer the Netflix model for movies.

TVs haven’t changed much is years, maybe Apple can light a spark in all these OEMs ass and we can finally see some improvement. Hate them or love them, the iPhone really change the whole game.

    • QNX Please

TV’s haven’t changed much…. in 1999 there was no such thing as a flat screen, now you can’ even buy a CRT. Streaming content over the internet is due to copyrights and profit protection at the hands of the cable companies and networks.

        changed much…

        HDTV seemed to occur recently
        and digital over the airwaves

as much as I like apple, I still don’t see the big win for them to build a  high endTV, when Apple TV is the perfect $99 dongle for the current high end technofile

The only way I see it happening is if the ‘iTV’ has a built in 7.2 decoder/sound-out system to drive external speakers (and sell the speakers).  Build it out for a 37″… Sell it for…  $499.
        - Internet ready
        - one remote
        - wireless
        - no need for a HT system (for 7.2, that’s at least $250 in cost, plus the cabling hassle), just speakers
        - 1080P 120Hz LED
        - Game Ready
        - Camera (with IR sensors for game playing)
        - bluetooth (for keyboard and mouse)

That would be the way Apple would make a compelling enterntainment center…. ‘for the rest of us’.  internet TV, full 7.2 sound, eliminate HDMI cabling (at both ends).  just plug it into the wall, and it works.

        Movies
        Video
        Youtube
        NetFlix
        FaceTime
        games
books (the new audio book reader…. think about having the TV read the books to the kids… talk about bad parenting…. first VCR tapes of books, now eBooks with a reader attached).
        iTunes
        podcasts
        Apps
        internet radio.
$499  plus speakers (yeah, put a 2.1 sound system in the TV for ‘internal’ speakers.

Why not.  Isn’t that just a big iPad, which is a big iPod Touch?

Wow… I’m convinced.  I’d buy one for my 80ish year old parents.   Cheaper than an iMac, same basic functionality.

      • Anonymous

That is wishful thinking lol, but possible! , basically they would just have to take the mac mini and insert into a TV then. add the camera for face chat on the TV, insert the wireless time capsule into it. make a decent size remote with keyboard and touch pad.

      • Anonymous

Why not just sell a supped up Mac Mini/AppleTV and have it connect to whatever TV you use and do the same thing?

      • Anonymous

Key difference from Atv and iTV: only one remote. My wife hates the 3 remotes (tv, recvr, iRemote) now and she’s pretty savvy. Apple is all about user experience, and the remote is a key part of it.

pocket pc changed it apple just marketed to consumers instead of businesses, then they put a cash register on it ,with the words feed me

Can’t wait to see all the iTards walking out of the Apple store with $6000 42″ TV’s because it has an Apple logo on it.

    • Anonymous

if it’s over $600, I’ll be surprised.  That’s the power of the cloud.   I can sell you a $600 TV, and then sell you the content to play on it.   my wife has spent over $500 on ebooks  this year, not leaving the house.
this is the ultimate Box in Set (as opposed to SetTop Box) solution.

As for your iTard comment… remember, iTards value convenience.   Those are the high profit people Apple seems to be convincing in every market they enter.

      • Anonymous

by convenience do you mean stupidity to some spending hard earned cash is quite thoughtful, not to just waste it

      • http://pileofnearmisses.tumblr.com pileofnearmisses

I’ll be sure to check in with you to make sure you approve of how I spend my money.

      • Anonymous

by convenience, I’m meaning time has value.   if you earn 100,000 a year, and you spend 5 hours hooking up a TV, set top box, universal remote, Home theater system, that brings you no value to your knowledge and goals in life… That’s either 5 hours ‘lost time’ or worse , $250 in installation costs.

Vs  1) unbox TV, 2) Plug in, 3) Enter Wireless password, 4) enter iTunes Password, 5) there is no 5.   and you’re now on iCloud with your TV, using the same interface that you get your music, books, and apps.

The latter is convenient.   so now you have my definition.

I’m not saying convenient is good.  I’m just saying convenient sells to a large portion of the middle class (elite class… they pay someone else the $500 for installation).

as for Apple prices, you all appear to be making the mistakes about ‘specs’ vs ‘value.’  If Apple is overprices, then people wouldn’t be spending what they do.  and Competition would be succeeding.   Starting with the iPod, the MacBook Pro,and most recently with the iPad, Apple is is building value at a competitive price.  read:  Market looks at competition, and makes a selection and more often than not, it’s Apple.

Old, tired come backs.  So lacking of originality.  Can’t we please come up with some new material.  The iPad changed this with their pricing.  Do you think it will all of a sudden change now?  No, they want this to sell like the iPad.  So expect iPad type pricing.

I want my TV set to be dumb (as a monitor) so I’ll be able to swap the smart brains of it on and off (Apple TV, Google TV, PS3, XBox, etc). And TVs usually have a longer life span than computers (at least for me).
So: Apple TV streamer – good idea, Apple TV set – bad idea.
But the time will tell, of course.

    • Anonymous

I prefer the set top box strategy as opposed to integrated.

  • Alexander530

This makes a lot of sense since they already have their cloud services up and running. It would be really convenient to have your tv and computer combined out of the store. It would be less clutters and very minimal set up required. Hope this all happens by the end of this year :)

The writing is on the wall… Apple will make the TV the next “thing” to have, just like the smartphone, laptop, and tablet. Microsoft should take note and not let their Windows Media Center die, if Apple comes out with iTV, this will another in a long line of missed opportunity for MS.

    Windows Phone 7 – Late
Windows 8 – Will be Late
    Media Center Embedded - LATE!

    • http://twitter.com/starnovsky Stan Tarnovsky

Microsoft is betting on Xbox as an TV-connected device. I think Xbox is doing quite well. It’s a media center, and it’s a game console.

  • Large_Farva

If I had a dollar for every time BGR made an incorrect “prediction” based on a “trusted source”, I’d never have to work a day in my life. I wish you could sue people based on stupidity…

if they say its gonna blow netflix out of the water, then Im guessing they plan on adding a streaming service for a low monthly rate for more movies, newer movies, TV shows and music.

  • http://twitter.com/ElectroCar Michael Lemus

Its pretty crazy how Apple goes from suing Samsung for IP infringement to asking them to make their TV’s for them. Anyway, I can see the TV following the same suit the iphone and ipad took. Basically, give the TV slighly better functiality than existing tv’s but them slowly adding features over the coming models. Launch model will be a 32 inch with decent display specs, a basic Apple TV stuffed into the tv with the iphone 5 processor with ok storage for Apps and sell for 399-499. Airplay will be one of the main features because this would tie the iphone, ipad, ipod touch all together and more than likely they will add a little something extra to wow the crowd and the media. Personally, I like the idea of an Apple TV tying all these gadgets into a common ecosystem but as long as I have an Xbox 360 its just not gonna work for me.

  • His Shadow

Yes. They will “blow away” a company that adds value to the purchase of an iOS device.

  • SteveJobs

The problem is not technology or apple is the damn greedy studios and movie companies that want to squeeze all they can from their customers. Why would I pay 100$ plus for cable if I can get the shows mostly free or a a reasonable price. Eventually it will happen and I’m sure apple feels it cam be a digital cable provider but content is what is holding their tech back.

Hopefully, these studies will either learn that is better to just make a few bucks legally than not get anything at all and push customers to piracy

  • Anonymous

I think this is a terrible idea. I’d rather they beefed up the AppleTV to let it take in inputs from cable and everything else and then fed out to a TV of my choice.

  • Anonymous

If they did do this there would not be a separate apple tv box it will more than likely be integrated in the tv.

  • mike

Cool, as long as they don’t block netflix, or want crazy money for them.
