Apple introduces updated Time Capsule, now with 3TB of storage

Breaking

Apple just took the wraps off of its new 3TB Time Capsule automatic wireless backup hard drive. The company said that it will continue to offer a 2TB version of its Time Capsule alongside the new 3TB version, and it doesn’t look like there are any other differentiating specs. Apple appears to have also quietly updated its Airport Extreme product with support for up to 450Mbps file transfers over both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands, and the website has also been refreshed a bit. The 2TB Time Capsule drive is now available for $299 and the new 3TB model will set you back $499.

Breaking means it’s happening right now, which it is.

Actually the apple store has the 3TB model now for $499, where the 2TB is still $299.

No Thunderbolt. No thanks. I know thunderbolt isn’t necessarily for everyone, but when it comes to video editing, and motion graphics, it helps immensely, especially since my MBP is capable of utilizing the tech that Apple said would be the norm. I just don’t understand why Apple would include thunderbolt on its machines, but then, not release it on its proprietary time capsule. Heres to hoping.

Yeah, but isn’t the point of Time Capsule that it’s wireless?

      • Steve Jenkins

I agree totally, however, there are times I work with it hooked up to the TV and it just sits right there next to my older time capsule. If the newer Mac Pro Desktop’s come with thunderbolt as well its even more of a missed opportunity. Not only for me, but for Apple. The wireless backup feature is cool, but the size of the drive and speed of transfers doesn’t warrant a sky-high price tag like that. I still have RAID so all is not lost! ;)

no… that’s it’s pretty much idiot proof backups for my kids and wife.

I use my TC as a wired Cat6 gigabit ethernet.   The fact that the new one is 75% faster will be way cool.   I’m still using Rev2 with only 500mb internal (2GB external), so I don’t have all the bells/whistles yet.

However, with my wife now doing a lot more on her macbook and the house having a dead spot in the master bedroom (it appears that our iPad can’t penetrate 2 floors and our body mass very well when we prop it on our knees.;-(  ), that I’m running Cat 6 upstairs to daisy chain the service for the upper floors.

So it may be time to spend $299 on the latest gadget… and I’m still thinking the new TCs will likely caching servers for iCloud…. I’m just a wishful thinker that way.

Disappointed that this update isn’t anything more then 2TB –> 3TB. I’ll pass (and I was actually waiting on a new model)…
