RIM is bloody but not dead yet, RBC says

Business

In a note to investors Friday morning, RBC Capital Markets Managing Director Mike Abramsky lowered his target on shares of RIM stock from $45 to $35 with a Sector Perform rating. Following yesterday’s bloodbath, shares of RIM stock plummeted by as much as 19% after-hours on concerns surrounding RIM’s second-quarter and full-year outlook. The Waterloo, Ontario-based company slashed its full-year EPS outlook from $7.50 to between $5 and $6.50, and it said second-quarter earnings could be as low as $0.75 per share. Abramsky remains cautiously optimistic, however. “Disappointing Q1 results validates prior execution concerns amidst competitive pressures,” he writes. “Although it’s possible RIM fails to turn itself around, that outcome may be premature, we believe, given sustained positives.” The analyst notes 16% year-over-year growth, 68 million total subscribers, service growth and enterprise leadership among the yesterday’s bright spots, and says RIM’s strategy with QNX, TAT-built user interfaces and Android app support “remains sound.” He adds that the impact of BlackBerry 7 devices this fall and then QNX-based handsets, which are expected in the first quarter of 2012, could make RIM an “attractive acquisition candidate.”

All this talk of a takeover of RIM. I can’t find a single company that needs them.

Microsoft, HP palm, Sony to name a few

Even with RIMM down 23% now today, the market cap is still 18.5 billion. Pop on a takeout premium and that’s a big acquisition, unless you’re Apple, and we know that’s not happening.

      • Rivoli3216136

        Logically they should wait
for one year (thinking that RIM’s value will be near 0).

        RIM’S market share should
continue to drop (as much as ANDROID will continue to grow).

      • Rivoli3216136

        Why buying a company when
you think that the market share of their OS will be dropping continuously ?

      • Hugh

Patents… From what I’ve seen iMessage is a giant offender of patent infringement. Almost 20 billion is quite steep though.

      • marc

Because sony’s hand is not already full with ericsson.  Why would HP need with them after just buying Palm, and what’s MS going to do with them?

They may not be dead yet, but its been YEARS since they’ve had an eye catching product.  RIM… Your platform is burning.

There is no faith in RIM.

the iPhone has been around for 5 years, android just as long. for 5 years both android and ios and hardware has advanced beyond what hardware and OS RIM has put out. att and RIM made a huge deal about the Torch, what a piece of crap that is.

I see webOS or WP7 in my future

You can’t just release a product and expect people to buy. RIM has lost mindshare in the consumer sector. They either need to market their products better to consumers, or focus their efforts on carving out a niche in the corporate market segment.

I wonder who would be interested in buying RIM. I am sure there are plenty of tech companies that would want the patents, carrier relationships, etc.

They are not dead yet. There are still plenty of people with interest in BB. They just need that wow phone to get them back in the game or there done. I heard on the news that white house and all government officials   are using iphones now so BB better get their shit together.

    • numetheus

There were many people interested in Palm too.

Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest aerial battle in this history of mankind.
Mankind — that word should have new meaning for all of us today.
We can’t be consumed by our petty differences anymore.
We will be united in our common interests.
Perhaps its fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom, not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution — but from annihilation.
We’re fighting for our right to live, to exist.
And should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice:
“We will not go quietly into the night!
We will not vanish without a fight!
    We’re going to live on!
    We’re going to survive!”
Today, we celebrate our Independence Day!

The only thing RIM has going for them now is inertia: all those companies & people who depend on the Blackberry network.  You can’t easily (if at all) transfer that stuff over to an Android or iPhone, so Blackberries will still be around for a while.  RIM can take advantage of that and get their ass in gear, or they can be arrogant.  US Thx Giving holiday is their big chance, they better have a kick-ass product ready for then – a press release promising great stuff in 2012 will be a suicide note!

The only thing that can save RIM is a quick realce of the new phones BB 9900, 9930,,,,,,,
the BB phones were keeping them alive,
the tablet field is too big on them it not supposed to be there main gol now

  • max

i will give you $2/ share for the whole thing RIM.

Hmm. The downward spiral continues.A year ago, after sampling android, I sang from any rooftop..Palm, Nokia and RIM are dead. Well; Palm slipped under a rock at HP, Nokia gladly took one from Microsoft and 3 months ago I concluded that RIM was completely doomed after their last desperate shout for attention  was a Tablet that needs you to buy their phone also to be useful. I have been singing it since about BB, they are doomed through stubbornness.

-55% Stock drop 3months later. They are laying off staff, but most importantly releasing nothing of note still.
They are slowly going to admit stupidity and take one from Android and Apple by finally releasing the BBM API to those platforms (a year too late btw).

Once the 3rd world countries wake up to Android, not even an exorcism will free BB of its possession by crapware demons dragging it the way of the Dodo bird. They have not improved any of the line up for 5yrs, simply relying on the corporate greed philosophy of  ”Haha, you have our server so we own you”. Which is now seriously backfiring as IOS, Android and MS all target the corporate world aggressively.

As they say INNOVATE OR DIE. BB chose the later, and is slowly doing that. Not quick enough though.

Rim is really in big trouble noted today is that one of its biggest investors is pulling out,, adding that rim is resting on its lorals. I see Rim being another palm, might get gobbled up my someone else eventually. so this article saying bloody but now out,, as also said by someone else 23% down this month and layoffs pending, sounds like a sinking ship to me

  • Anonymous

Heres hoping RIM gets it in gear, seems alot of people are pulling for RIM, but they need to stop releasing like 5 new curves and 3 different bolds every few months, and bring it down to 3 models a year, Bold, Torch, Curve and get ahead of the competition with innovative designs and features, stop leaving out features that are becoming the Norm like front facing cameras, people want cutting edge flagship smartphones to show off, especially those between ages of 16 – 30. there alson missing big name apps that android/iphone are using like netlflix and hulu. there OS is decent but it seems people prefer a more desktop structure on there phone.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GP2WYAHXS6CRUREISWBGPUSUGE Michael

android and iOS are nothing like a “desktop” UI on their phone.

  • Anonymous

I been to a few developing countries and Rim has about 95% market share there, do to poor Internet services, so I won’t called them dead just yet. Rim main problem is that they can’t release a quality product for the develop word, to make matters worse their upcoming devices just look terrible. iOS 5 is going to put the last nail in RIms coffin i believe.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JZFRCGXGVUR4E3KRVOPRQGMGHU Harry Digital

i really hope RIM goes down, like this they could fire all the north american employees, have them lose their jobs and start fresh with cheap labor over in china, this will be such a beautiful add-on to our current shitty economy!

    FYI: this comment is SARCASTIC

  • Ghostnyc

Im a bb fan and RIM is long over due for a major shake up.  This is just
the beginning.  Shareholders abandoning ship is one thing, however what
is really needed is for the Board of Directors to take immediate action
and  fire the CO-CEO’s.  The only excuse for RIM’s failing is lack of
vision & management from their leadership.  They have the cash, the
talent and the ability to bounce back, the only question is will they be
brave enough to actually do it.

Do some research learn some history- Apple was in the shitter for a time until Steve Jobs returned and took control of his company and turned it around. Comebacks are possible

RIM is on life support… it’s in a coma and is suffering from terminal cancer… and has full blown AIDS too

  • http://twitter.com/iAmMrHD Mr. HD

We can rebuilt RIM. We have the technology.

  • appleberry

Does everyone not remember a time when Apple was struggling to exist in the electronics/computing world?  It was not all that long ago.  And more recently in the last decade windows phones struggled but have appeared to gain new traction with an updated OS.  In the course of the last 15 years phones have gone from analog with a battery bag, to a palm sized computer.  Any company who has manage to come into existence and survived will experience periods of bad sales.  And yes innovation will be required.  But to assume that this company is down and out would be foolhardy and presumptuous.  History has shown that sometimes, it takes just one good, unexpected product to turn everything around….aka iPod.

And no I am not a BB fanboy, I have one for work but an iPhone for my personal device.

  • androidsux4life

Wish people would wake up and see BlackBerry is still the best and will always be the best. Android flat out sucks. I have owned about 15 different android phones, on different carriers and they all sucked. Crappy battery life with android phones. ALL OF THEM. I can go 3 days without charging my Berry. I know for a fact no Android fanboy can say the same. The only thing android has going for it is the marketplace but even then, 85% of all apps located there are pure garbage. Android is waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy over rated as is the iphone. I have tried jumping on the android bandwagon multiple times and while I liked the phones and the OS, android is simply nowhere near as stable as a Berry and I dont think it ever will be. Think about it: if android is so great, why is there a new update every few months? seems to me they shouldnt have released it until they can get it stable enough to where the battery isnt drained by 5 pm.

Read again carefully, total subscribers – 68 millions, I have a felling people have been holding back upgrading while waiting for the new devices or waiting for the current devices prices to drop as a consequence.

68 millions is a LOT of people.

Does Apple or Google release the total active users figures? Don’t think so.
