Apple launches 2011 back to school offer: $100 iTunes gift card

Computers

It’s certainly not going to knock any socks off this year, but Apple has finally kicked off its annual back to school sale. A day behind schedule, Apple on Thursday announced that students making qualifying Mac purchases will receive a complimentary $100 iTunes gift card. The offer applies to college students and those accepted into college, and any MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, iMac or Mac Pro purchase will qualify for the gift card. Apple’s promotion this year offers less than half the back-for-your-buck compared to past promotions that offered a free iPod touch with each purchase, but $100 toward software for your new Mac computer on top of a 10% student discount still makes for a decent deal. Apple’s offer runs from now through September 20th, so students have more than enough time to wait for that imminent MacBook Air refresh we’ve all been expecting.

BGR should put SPONSORED MESSAGE above the headline of this article.

    • Gardner

Oh definitely. I’m sure Apple paid tons of cash for BGR to say how shitty their back to school promo is.

Their worst back to school offer to date. Its a shame since I was considering purchasing a macbook air this autumn.

Whats ironic is that it was reported earlier that this years back to school offer was gonne be the best one yet, where they were said to be offering a free iPod touch OR the equivalent off an iPad.

I hope this hits their autumn sales and hits it hard, i can wait another year – although I’ll probably get a palm tablet to be honest.

Did you even read the article? This is about a computer, not a damn phone.
God your fanboyism actually causes me head pain.

Great, this makes the MBP still more expensive than any other laptop out there.

APPLE GOOD!!!! ANDROID BAD!!!! such an amazing company. Always giving back to the people. Not like samsung. All they did was dump their junk 7″ tabs on schools. That’s worse than getting socks for Christmas. True story.

Also I forgot to mention that I’m a narrow-minded Apple fanboy who likes to Gargle Steve Jobs’s Balls in my mouth…

Are u mad cuzz u own one of those crappy androids? Buy an iPad. It
        will make u feel better.

  • That Guy

Not quite as good as a free Xbox 360 from Microsoft

Yeah, I had hoped Apple would pull something amazing out of their sleeves.
Although, you also get a free printer along with that $100 gift card.
I guess Apple’s promotion is more useful for students (books, printer, software, etc). And most students probably already have a game console anyway. But come on, students don’t think of that kind of stuff.

      • Ajax3 14

dude, what is about the printer you are saying . I am not finding any free printer????

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_4LLYRNW54JHSJEOEFWN7DMUAXE Peter

I think the free printer deal goes on all year long at anytime you buy a mac as a student they will give u a discount on there printer. Some discount it enough to be free.

Before you consider this a bad promo, think of it this way:
Free iWork suite (you know, for doing homework)
Free music (For parties after homework)
    Free printer (an ongoing promotion).
    Free books
Movies, tv shows, games, apps, etc.

The point is, it’s $100 for the Mac App Store / App Store / iBook Store as well as $100 towards a printer. Seeing as these are things students need (Office Suite, Printer, Books), as well as games music, movies, etc, I think it’s actually a pretty good deal. Although I do think Apple could have offered $150. Books aren’t cheap.

I remember the days when they used to give $300 rebates…

  • http://twitter.com/rravindras Ryan

That’s odd…that’s like half the price of the ipod touch they used to offer. Are they trying to save money or something?

    • Lechero

They do have $60 billion in cash, im guessing theyre trying to get a company olympic size swiming pool fill it up with hundreds and go swimming in it.

apple’s popularity is getting to their heads. they need to give away more free crap. what is wrong with them? obviously a sustainable business model is not in their plans.

    • Zac Caslin

You don’t like the price don’t buy. If all you want is free shit buy android and you might even get two for one.

      • serpentor

        #sarcasm, dude

  • Danieegeexo

Considering Im an ingoing freshman this discount stinks compared to the rumored ipad discount, but I have to say the gift card will definitely come in handy as a college student.

    • Ajax3 14

      (ipad!=200$giftcard)

  • Joe12304

Lame. They used to give us iPod Touches. Now I get basically nothing.

This is a great promotion that apple always runs. When I first bought my macbook for school they offered $100 off but I think I would rather have the $100 apple gift card to either buy some software or a mouse or a bag or something along those lines.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AOFZNUYIFIO2XBZ7RLBX7IZUAU ArturoB

You could take the $100 you would have spent and buy an Apple gift card then…

Plus, with a $100 rebate in many states you would save between $5 and $10 in taxes, so you could effectively get your gift card AND a value meal.

    • Anonymous

You can only use that gift card on the app store, not on entire apple store offering, so no mouse or bag for you.

I still has my edu account and I am going to use it to buy a laptop this fall. I was gonna buy a Mac but after Microsoft’s Xbox free give away deal, I am sticking with Window for now.

  • Bayestrian

Student discount on cheapest model macs is $50. So not 10%

  • Tob

This is laughable. Apple used to offer a free iPod and printer to college students – things we would actually appreciate having. Who wants a $100 credit to the app store? It’s trash. Give me a break Apple, I have student loans and other costs. I’m not going to drop ten bills on a macbook when I could get a cheap PC for less than half the price. The old offer actually offset the cost of the mac but this one is a joke.

Goodbye Apple. I’m sure I represent a lot of college students when I say that I won’t be buying your products anytime soon.
