4G PlayBook launches delayed until fall

Breaking

Research In Motion Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis on Thursday revealed that the 4G versions of RIM’s PlayBook tablets will not launch this summer, as the company had previously announced. The delays were mentioned in passing as Lazaridis mentioned how excited he was to be launching 4G PlayBook models this fall. RIM had previously stated that three 4G versions of its PlayBook — an LTE model for Verizon Wireless, a WiMAX model for Sprint, and an HSPA+ model for AT&T — would launch this summer. RIM also noted that the new BlackBerry Bold 9900 / 9930 would be delayed until the end of August. Like the 4G PlayBooks, RIM has said previously that the new Bold would launch this summer.

Are waiting till the 3rd quarter to release the Playbook 4G to see if we are still in business? Or are just wanting to watch more customers float by.

Exactly.  My patience for RIM is wearing thin.  Now, after the earnings reports, they’re talking about layoffs????? I bet their incompetence leads them to cut the OS developers they so desperately need.

It’s a disheartening situation because the hardware really is very well-done… but if they can’t get this ‘lack of on-board PIM apps’ situation sorted out immediately, the PlayBook probably won’t last another 8 weeks in the market.

By the time they will come out with one everyone will have moved on to new tablet devices and the Playbook will be like the 7′ Galaxy tab. Frankly I don’t see the need for a separate data plan for a tablet. I mean in the age where so many people have phones with wifi hotspots that come included on even the most basic plans. That’s why i decided to invest in a wifi tablet and just add a bit more data to my phone bill

Isn’t that the argument that Playbook fans use? That you just tether your data from your Blackberry and don’t need a separate data or tethering plan?

Of course if it gets popular, the carriers will crack down. All other devices are capable of the same thing, you just have to get around the carriers’ imposed restrictions.

Smart thinking RIMjob. Launch a product so late that it will be outdated by competitor products.

A stable, minimalist OS that will now sync everything you do across all of your desktops and iOS devices automatically? One that runs super smoothly?

    • Carmen

    • Nope

      Troll fail!

“According to meteorologists, summer extends for the whole months of June, July, and August in the northern hemisphere and the whole months of December, January, and February in the southern hemisphere.”

      • Anonymous

Um, the CALENDAR summer runs from about June 21st to September 21st.

I have a PlayBook and love it, of course it’s Bridged to my BlackBerry, so I already have e-mail, and I’m also inside an office all day, so it’s always on WiFi. Without a phone with a mobile hotspot, a BlackBerry to Bridge to, or always being on a WiFi network, I don’t really know what RIM would expect one to do with their PlayBook though..

Considering I’m Canadian I try not to say to much when it’s RIM but this ongoing comedy of errors is starting to get ridiculous. After the last quarterly revenue numbers were released the shareholders should have staged a revolt and thrown out those two incompetent CEO’s, or as I like to call them Twiddle Dumb and Twiddle Dumber. What gets me really mad about all this is those two idiots actually had the gall to then go on record and announce there will be future employee layoffs. Considering all of RIM’s woes are the result of the sheer incompetence of the two clowns in charge and not the rank and file employee’s who are just trying to do their jobs the best they can I say lay off the two ass hats in charge and get someone at the helm who knows what they’re doing. Send Dwiddle Dumb and Dwiddle Dumber off to Microcrap. I’m sure monkey boy Ballmer will be ecstatic to finally have two playpen buddies who share the same incompetent short sighted vision as him when it comes to business. It’d be a match made in heaven, we could all sit back and laugh as Twiddle Dumb Twiddle Dumber and Twiddle Dumbest all got up on stage and started doing the I’m a dumb incompetent monkey boy dance.

I never understood the “co-CEO” thing. They act like they’re running a small business, but they’re a publicly traded company with a responsibility to shareholders.

i’m waiting for 10 inch version of Playbook….but the waiting makes me crazy…Why they announces a device, then delay it?? it’s very cruel

  • Tonygt007

@Scroat:disqus Apple has a 9-inch screen; Samsung has a 10-inch screen; Hp has a 10-inch screen… so the question is: why Rim doesn’t have a bigger screen than 7-inch??

    • Anonymous

      Isn’t Apple’s 9.7? They’re all about 10″.

      I don’t see the appeal of a 7″ tablet.

  • Todd

I can only guess that the delay is to surprise the market with QNX phones in September instead of next year.  That should be the only acceptable answer.

You people make me laugh… If you had a product that had even 100th of the market share RIM holds you would be as happy as a pig in shit! Life happens, they still make an awesome superior product that the majority loves when you take the world into account not just the USA. Sure stock prices may suck but so what, stock prices have no bearing on my choice of  a device. As for the 4G I would love to see any one of you do any better then RIM.. you all think this is just as simple as throw money at a problem and it will fix it? Do this do that…. there is a reason why you make comments on BGR instead of running multi billion dollar companies. You are like a bunch of rats that jump off ship because you think it’s sinking but all someone did was throw a pail of water across the deck.

Don’t get we wrong yeah it sucks crap gets delayed but holly crap chill the frick out! It’s like RIM owes you something. Seriously shit or get off the pot just leave cause I am sick of hearing it same thing from the same people every time. I am perfectly happy with how fast RIM comes out with new devices. There is nothing worse then what Android phone makers do which is a phone every week. So us real users that actually know what we want are happy go bug a different company with your consumer give me the world attitude!

RIM will end up selling all their stuff here in Latin America, where there are people dumb enough to buy it just for the BBM, without been enterprises users.
