Duke Nukem Forever available for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC now

Gaming

Fifteen years and several delays after Duke Nukem 3D’s original release, the sequel Duke Nukem Forever — announced in 1997 — is finally available for Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. “June 14 in North America will forever be celebrated as the day that legendary Duke Nukem Forever went from video game folklore to earth-shattering reality,” Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K Games, said. “For 15 years, fans have waited in limbo just yearning to hear those two little lovely words strung together–now available.” Unfortunately, early reviews of the game aren’t as earth-shattering. Ars Technica’s Ben Kuchera said Duke Nukem Forever was “barely playable, not funny, rampantly offensive,” in his headline and concluded the only good thing about the experience was that “the game doesn’t last very long.” The Guardian’s review of the game was somehow even less complimentary: ”If this was 15 years in the making, it makes you wonder what they did for the other 14 years and 10 months.” Even still, Duke Nukem was such a staple in our early first-person shooter experience that we can’t help but feel some temptation to stop by Gamestop this afternoon.

“barely playable, not funny, rampantly offensive”

I guess they weren’t paid off to give a good review, like the ones for all the repetitive Call of Duty games… It’s suppose to be OFFENSIVE! Have they never played the original? Fuck these ass clowns. I can’t wait to play this game. COME GET SOME!

Based on the demo and every review I’ve seen it’s not ‘offensive’ in the way the original one was. DNF is a mess of half conceived ideas strung together with jokes that try to hard to shock and offend. Almost every design decision takes it away from the gameplay of Duke3D and puts it squarely in the camp of another cover-based, may as well be on rails shooter much like CoD etc. It should not have seen the light of day and I feel bad for and ashamed of Gearbox at the same time, because after releasing this mess they have no goodwill with gamers/reviewers.

I would argue the contrary, actually: I would say Gearbox has a lot more goodwill with gamers for getting this thing out of development hell and actually releasing it. Hell, they even had fun with it when it got delayed again (check YouTube for video about that).

Having said that, here’s a list of what Gearbox has done:
        - Worked on every expansion to Half-Life 1
        - Released the Brothers in Arms series
        - Released Borderlands
        - Going to release Aliens: Colonial Marines
        - Created a Claptrap marriage proposal (Google it)

Believe me when I say that they are not hurting for goodwill with gamers. As for reviewers… they’re a fickle bunch anyway. You can’t try to please them.

It’s offensive by 1995 standards, when we were kids. It’s good for a rental, so you can take a walk down memory lane… but I see no reason to own this.

Going from the early reviews it sounds like it needed a bit more time, which is kind or ironic.

    I’m waiting for BF3.

IGN slammed this game. Said it was a joke and couldn’t keep up with today’s games. Never was a Duke fan so I don’t really care.

Compare the ‘humour’ of Duke Nukem Forever to the jokes, wit and quality writing on Portal 2. Rather than resurrect Duke Nukem I think they should have just buried him a little deeper and salted the earth.

And of course it takes “Forever” to be released! But at least it finally came out! Late better than never! (I haven’t even played it, hopefully it doesn’t totally suck).

This is starting to sound a bit like Chinese Democracy (Gn’R). 15 years in the making, with expectations that it could in no way live up to.

It wasn’t 15 years IN the making. It’s just been 15 years since the idea began. And was scrapped and remade. And was band-aided. And was reshaped. And was reshaped again…

This game is not worth paying full price for a matter of fact. This game is not worth paying a used price for… The game feels dated. The controls are bad, it suffers from frame rate problems, and the graphics are horrible. The game feels as if it should have been released on the Xbox 1 or PS2. The one liner is not funny at all. The loading time is horrible… It’s a shame that it took this long to release and it feels like a game that was rushed… What is OFFENSIVE about the game is the game itself. Don’t bother. If you feel the need to give it a try, do yourself a favor, RENT IT FIRST… Read reviews about this game. I’m not kidding you… This game is the most anticipated disaster ever…

Finally!  I have been playing this on XBOX 360 for a few days and I do not like it on consoles.  I am getting this on the PC instead.

This game is fucking awesome and anyone who is complaining about it is probably complaining because:

    1. They COD and BF games are the best games evar!!!
    2. Graphics mean everything.
    3. Can’ take a joke.
    4. Don’t understand what Duke Nukem is about
    5. Wasn’t paid enough to write a good review.
