Apple could pay Nokia $600M up front, $550M each year in patent settlement

Business

Deutsche Bank analyst Kai Korschelt on Tuesday estimated that Nokia stands to make a pretty penny off of royalty payments from Apple moving forward. Nokia announced early on Tuesday that it had reached an agreement with Apple regarding a series of patent disputes filed by each company over the past few years. Based on recent settlements tied to similar cases in the industry, Korschelt estimates that Apple will give Nokia a $608 million lump-sum payment up front. Following that initial payment, Apple will like pay Nokia a 1% royalty on all iPhones sold each quarter as a licensing fee. At Apple’s current pace — which has increased steadily rapidly since the iPhone first launched — that works out to approximately $138 million each quarter, or more than $550 million annually.

Microsoft is just reeling in the dough, however indirect

The question is, for how long is this gonna last? Even one percent of iPhone revenue is a lot. How long before Apple licenses someone else’s patents for LTE calling etc? My guess is that Nokia’s patents for that aren’t going to be as numerous.

    • Celtfalcon

Actually, Nokia has a ton of LTE patents as well. Remember, the NSN has been helping make LTE happen in Europe and the US. This could last a long time.

    $600 million is. . .

. . .an entire quarter of HTC profits.

. . .1/3rd of Google’s entire business profit last quarter.

. . .1/5th of Apple iPhone profit last quarter.

To Apple, it’s nothing. Unfortunately, Nokia’s coming for Android next.

From your statement I can tell you don’t work in finances.
$550 million/yr is ‘not’ nothing, especially when you are paying it out to a competitor.

    • Anonymous

Close but not quite right. They made 6+ billion last quarter. 3 billion was from the iPhone alone.

      • BurleyShells

        revenue =/= profit

      • Anonymous

Revenue was 25 billion. Profit was 6. Check it out.

Whoops… I’m blind. I see u did write 1/5 of iPhone profit. My bad.

Impossible, apple inventedthe smartphone, mobile web browsing, LCD screens, mobile processors, cut-and-paste, glass screens and pretty much anything else having to do with smartphones, tablets, computers or modern technoology, didn’t they?

Oh that’s right the android phone was out long before the iphone, just like their tablet OS, just like the form factor for the smart phone.  You aren’t a very good troll :)   Troll on McTrolling

AAPL makes that much money whenever Scott Forstall sneezes.

    • Drew

Whether it’s $550M, or a $100 bill I’ve wiped my ass with, Apple has to pay for shit they’ve been stealing…. (borrowing, pilfering, misappropriating, poaching, smuggling…etc). Just like everybody else.

  • Anonymous

These anal-ysts know nothing and I find that sum grossly underestimated.

Considering all of the technology Apple has stolen, it’s probably a lump sum of 1.7 billion and 1 billion each year thereafter; for life!!! Or, until the World ends.

apple is a joke…they rip off everything from everyone. I used to think steve jobs was a visionary leader with innovation and expertise, but all he really knew how to do was copy other companies and put his own tweak on things. Coupled with great advertising and you got a recipe for success. This is the prime example why i wont buy another apple product past my ipod.

    • http://www.droiddoes.com/ iNorm

Me too. I personally buy DROID to be different and anti-Apple. In the unlikely event DROID becomes as popular I leave and find something not that popular so I can be that trendy yet indie type like you.

Steve Jobs was probably a cult leader in a past life.  And when the aliens failed to appear he decided to run Apple.

    • Zac Caslin

      You tell em!!!!

Ya right. When you sober up you can do a repost.

      • Anonymous

Your name says it all ‘macboy’. Seriously, how many things just in the past week have we heard of that apple has copied? Android notifications, microsofts cloud (along with copying the name icloud), imessage from bbm(RIM) and the list goes on and on.

      • Anonymous

Ya let’s not go into what companies have copied off of apple. Look at every tablet, smartphone, portable music device and laptop AND i am sure hundred of other things you see today and say thank you apple

    • Anonymous

U still say the stupidest shit. What a shame. I bet ur kid does a lot of grunting….. True story.

    • Ben

Well, who cares how much they “rip” people off if it has been making them mad amounts of profit for years and still rising? Personally, with the quality of their hardware (cases) and OSX, you can’t really compare it to an alternative. OSX alone is great – I made the switch after 18 years on Windows and have not looked back. Nice being able to use Terminal and photoshop on the same OS with zero problems.

  • jezza

    ouch

  • Pacific

Of course, Apple will probably find something else and will not rely on Nokia patent on the next iPhone 5 release.  They will have something up their sleeves to get out of this.

    • Qrescue2

That’s would be the iphone 6. The iphone 5 is already in production.

  • Anonymous

1% royalty lol. Yeah I’m glad they stole nokias shit and buried em with it. Steve musta felt sorry for them. Giving em a penny for every buck earned LMAO!!!

    • Anonymous

I guess you could look at it that way, but $550M annually hurts. Even for a multi-billion dollar company. That’s money that could have gone into reserve or into investor’s pockets. I don’t think they’re as enthustiastic as you.

      • Anonymous

Don’t worry. They will show a smaller profit for the iPhone somehow.
Write off ALL their R+D for Mac iPod iPad apple tv etc etc as iPhone
        costs.

      • Anonymous

I know nothing about stocks and all that blah blah, but if I was an investor, and the company I’m putting my money in is “showing a loss”… every year… well I don’t that’s such a good investment.

      • Anonymous

Showing a loss is not gonna be possible. I was just fooling around.
But they will surely cook the books. Don’t be surprised if the iPad
makes more money and the iPhone drops. Also, maybe this is just a deal
for the iPhone 5. The patent they are licensing may only be used for a
year or two. We don’t know.

    • Tony

Royalties aren’t paid on net profits, they are based on sales.   Apple sells an iPhone to a distributor for say $100 (I know thats not accurate) Nokia gets $1.  It doesn’t matter what the profit margins are.  Apple can “cook the books” all they want, it’ll have no effect on the royalty payments.

      • Anonymous

Either way. Chalk it up to production cost. So their profit margin on
the iPhone goes from 61% to 60%?

  • Keymaker

Too bad most people are missing the entire point of this settlement. This means that Apple now has Nokia patent arsenal to go after Samsuck, Motorola and HTC. Not a bad deal if you look closely at it.

    • Anonymous

Don’t you mean Microsoft, not Apple? You can’t license someone else’s patent and then sue another company like it’s your own.

  • Steve Hillshire

Apple got burned!!  Ha ha ha, Apple sucks and copies just as much as anyone else.

  • sirpaul

“… Apple will like pay Nokia a 1%…”

Apple will like pay? lol, They will like, pay, like…600M $$ haha like yeah totally!
