Motorola’s MOTOBLUR: don’t call it by name

mobile

Time flies. Motorola introduced its MOTOBLUR user interface and software service with the debut of the Motorola CLIQ back in 2009, but now it appears that moniker’s days are coming to an end. Just yesterday the company unveiled two new Android smartphones for Sprint and Virgin Mobile: the Photon 4G and the Motorola Triumph. The Motorola Photon 4G clearly sports Motorola’s custom user interface, but there was absolutely no mention of the name. We’ve confirmed that Motorola will phase out referring to its UI as MOTOBLUR. Perhaps the move is related to Motorola’s purchase of Three Laws Mobile (3LM) earlier this year, which suggests that an entirely new UI is in the works. Either way, it’s clear that customers didn’t care for the original service and UI, but the bits and pieces that Motorola continues to use seems to be working well for the company. Read

Stock Android with unlocked bootloader or GTFO.

Motorola, it’s as simple as that.

Does the average consumer care about an unlocked bootloader?

Does the average consumer post to BGR? Or even know that it exists, for that matter? We’re not here speaking on behalf of the average consumer.

Microsoft take notes… No one wants tiles with latest call outs.

have you seen the prototype for Windows 8?

      • Steve Hillshire

Yeah, its even more tiles and lame as ever.  If that is the future of the desktop OS as well, Microsoft is going to get its behind kicked.  First thing they need to do is get rid of anything that says “START”, then get rid of the awkward tiles that look like someone took different sized cards from a deck and just threw them into a rectangle.  Having all that condensed down like that looks like something you’d have a 4 year old play with.  Ballmer needs to go.

Because Apple making OS X more iOS like is a better idea

Yep, looks just like Windows MOBILE 7 except the tiles are blue and not red. The tiles are also bigger; they’ve actually progressed in size and are now BLOCKS!!

Get an Android Phone or an iPhone and stop complaining, just because you dont like it, doesnt mean others dont

Whatever they wanna call it now, even if it was MotoDroid or MotoGold, it would still be a worthless piece of shit.

Maybe they should phase out the skin along with the name.

Every Android device in the States should give the user on first boot the option to run Native OS or Custom Skinned OS. The EUROPEAN version Motorola Droid’s give the user that option already. I know manufactures want to be able to differentiate their devices from others but it still can be done by gving said user a choice of Hardware and Software options. If Blur, Sense, Touch Wiz ate so good, why not offer them in the Android Store for a fee?

DROID is so free and open that you can just root and install a custom rom that some dork hopefully made well enough to not destroy your phone. DROID DOES!!

      • Sucka

        whatever webOS fan

MMMMMaybe they should just phase out from Android and let the serious companies perform here. No updates to the Xoom, Motoblur? No nexus type device for Verizon? Well the last part is Verizon, maybe they should stop too.

  • Madz4549

    I don’t really
mind the widgets or the overall look and feel of motoblur, but the performance
is so bad on my droid x2.  You would think after a couple years they would
have been able to smooth out and speed up the performance of the UI.  How
sad that they had to buy out a company to help them revamp the UI

What a joke not only is the android os fragmented now the ui is too. Carry on fandroids.

You miss the point.  Even MotoBlur is much, much better than the “icon” interface provides in iOS.

      • Anonymous

Why are icons so bad? It’s an intuitive interface, and I don’t spend hours staring at my homescreen. I spend time staring at apps.

      • Anonymous

Apple seems to disagree with you based on all the changes in iOS5

      • Steve Hillshire

And what you time you spend opening up 5 apps is the time I can get all that information from my homescreen without opening a single application.  Nice try, but fail.

    • Steve Hillshire

And I’ll take that any day over my phone looking exactly like the one next to me with a plain grid of icons.  You Apple fanboys just don’t get it.

        You’re such a non-conformist, you’ve conformed to the standards of non-conformity.

      • Steve Hillshire

For the record I have two iPod Touches too.  I, unlike a lot of other people in these forums, own 3 different mobile OS devices.

  • Generatione

I bought the Atrix, then returned it two days later. Its clear that motorblur caused the shitty-ass lag with all the nice specs of the Atrix. It’s junk so get rid of it.

MOTOBLUR’s name isn’t the problem. It’s the fact that it’s an unoptimized, resource-hogging skin on something that would probably be pretty nimble otherwise.
