AT&T to power free Wi-Fi in 20 NYC parks

mobile

New York City’s mayor Michael Bloomberg announced on Thursday that the city will soon offer free Wi-Fi in 20 of its parks. AT&T will power the service, which will be available in popular spots such as Prospect Park, Battery Park, and Central Park, later this summer, but New Yorkers can already surf for free in Battery Bosque Park, the Joyce Kilmer Park in the Bronx, and Thomas Jefferson Park, among others. The public will have ad-free access to the free networks for at least the next five years. No word on whether you’ll actually be able to use an AT&T phone for voice calling in the parks, however.

” No word if you’ll actually be able to use an At&t phone in the parks for voice calling.”

Im using it now NOT on wifi to post this as I’m on a boring conference call on my Atrix. LOVE that ability to use voice and data at the same time.

How ironic would it be for one to use a t-mobile and use the “Wi-Fi Calling” or UMA to obtain a signal via ATT’s Wi-Fi centers and not use any of their pooled minuets.

‘No word on whether you’ll actually be able to use an AT&T phone for voice calling in the parks’

    Answer:
You can’t use an AT&T phone anywhere in NYC for voice calling but you should know that already, Todd.

I think this a great thing and it should alleviate the burden and strain on AT&T’s network bandwidth. I just hope they don’t suffer another nationwide outage like they did three summers ago!

Tech bloggers brining up incidents that happened 3 years ago as if they were somehow relevant today?  Typical Verizon kiosk employee at their best spreading FUD.

AT&T:  We’ve given up on voice calling, but we still care about connecting you to the Internet.

This is cool.  How fast is this Wi-Fi going to be?  I hate those small time 1.5 Mbps connections that have to be shared with everyone.

Glad to see AT&T do this.

    I love this blog.

You have a bunch of whiny wannabe’s coming on here bashing carriers because they can’t get everything for free everywhere they go.

Then you see stories like this, where carriers are actually stepping up.

And all you see are retards huddling around 2-yr old blog stories to bash the carrier offering you something for free where you go.

Pure retards.   No doubt about it.

I guess that is what America is now.

    Sad, really.
