Motorola Triumph for Virgin Mobile hands-on

mobile

The Motorola Photon 4G from Sprint wasn’t the only Motorola device that got official a little while ago. The company has introduced a low cost Android handset for prepaid carrier Virgin Mobile, and it definitely tries to set the bar for what a prepaid phone is in today’s market. For starters, the Motorola Triumph’s styling is eerily similar to the first Motorola DROID, just thinner, and without the slide-out keyboard. The unit is solid, and while we noticed a bit of resistance using the display, Motorola informed us that it wasn’t a final production unit and that could change. Pricing wasn’t communicated to us, but it sure looks like it will be the prepaid Android handset to beat so far. Check out another image of the Triumph after the break.

Is that… is that virgin, unmolested FroYo?

    Do mine eyes deceive me?

I think all of Virgin’s android phones are virgin.  (see what I did there?)

ohhhh nooo three Android threads in a row!  And where are all the Androidnerds?  In the Apple threads biiittching that there’s not enough DRRROOOIIIDD news in here.  Yet will those same Androidnerds post in these threads as much as in the Apple threads?  Of course not.  Because deep down, they love Apple.

    The End.

I took them at their word that they were leaving for Engadget or somewhere…too bad I gotta think this would have made them hate BGR slightly less. Oh well, let the Apple transformation resume!

Thank goodness it is (for now) a Blur free device.

Let’s just hope they don’t lock the bootloader.

Was just thinking of dropping my optimus v for something on t-mobile.

Depending on price, I might stay..

If that still fits under their $25 per month plan — I’m buying one.

Regarding Moto Blur…Didn’t the Motorola CEO state that they were phasing out Moto Blur and not developing it further in a press conference last year ? Thus no Moto Blur on this phone…

    • Anonymous

No, Mr. Jha did not say they were phasing out Motoblur, he said they weren’t going to focus on it going forward, e.g., they weren’t going to be pushing as an advertising feature, he never said they were going to remove it.  I thought that initially, until I went and reread the article.

Pretty much every phone Moto has released since that article has been blurred up. This would be the first that was not.  A happy surprise to be sure.

Now the question is, is the boot loader encrypted and locked like their other options lately or are they actually going to unlock it like they supposedly said they were going to?

can u tether on this phone or any current vm phone ??

    • Rsilvawashington

the optimus v does wireless hotspot using the ‘quick settings’ app for free in the market. but be careful, vm’s TOS specifically says no tethering or data sharing.

  • Helloandroid

Heres hoping $250 at the most, my LG Optimus V is a solid phone, but I use o have a Droid x before leaving Verizon (best decision), but the Triumph could fill the void, especially with running the same CPU/gpu as the Thunderbolt

So far, the user experience is all over the place – lots and lots of complaints and some problem free reports…..

    • InspiredWerx

Heres one not “all over the place” fm a frmr iFone user…..This handset “wins”!!
