Elop: Nokia is not for sale

Business

Nokia CEO Stephen Elop once again addressed rumors of a possible sale of Nokia’s phone business. Rumors emerged on Wednesday suggesting Samsung was preparing to bid on Nokia’s cell phone division, but Elop addressed them on Thursday while speaking to The Wall Street Journal. Elop insisted that the rumors are “completely groundless.” The CEO continued, “Nokia is not for sale.” While Elop has been steady with his message, there is of course wiggle room in his choice of words. Neither the initial report suggesting a deal had been struck with Microsoft nor the subsequent Samsung rumor suggested that Nokia, as a company, was up for sale. Instead, these reports — at least one of which is well-sourced — suggest Nokia may be shopping a portion of its business; specifically, the cell phone division, which has been spiraling downward as Nokia’s market share diminishes rapidly.

I want them to be bought so this is over with. I am tired of hearing about this dead company.

It won’t be for sale until it has been sold.

That being said, I’m not vouching for Nokia’s demise unlike several people as it is a huge company responsible for thousands of jobs and also is the source of income for many families.

I do not wish unemployment upon anyone, it’s terrible.

    I know it first hand.

well, being taken over is different from being sold…

This is TERRIBLE news for shareholders and would look bad for Elop if he does end up selling.  This could’ve been an opportunity for shareholders to benefit from the situation by leveraging their existing IP for a sale/bidding war.  By Elop declaring a definitive like that, his reputation will take a big hit if he sells.  Bad move, imo.  Who would want to work for someone whose credibility is in question?

Does anyone know Eldar? He doesn’t fall into the category of well sourced. He is a good place to get unsubstantiated rumours. I even grant you he was the first to sound the WP7 rumour, but his batting average is still sub par, and so the veracity of his message is at times baseless and does not deserve a label of well sourced BGR I know blogs are trying to gain credibility as authentic news but this is tabloid at best. I would like to ask BGR to retract the well sourced phrase from this story because he is not a wholly credible source.

Ironically Symbian activity is on the rise. Symbian is a great OS, it
was the top Management that didn’t handle it properly and slowed it
down… And This Stephen Elop is no different; he doesn’t understand
that Nokia is different and not neccessarily bad. To each their own, and
to me and all Nokia users; Symbian is our choice of OS. I’m telling you
all right now, this Windows transition is only trouble; Elop either
leaves Microsoft or leaves Nokia. He should go back to Microsoft if he
    doesn’t like Nokia and Symbian!
