Hands on with Nintendo’s new Wii U controller

Gaming

We just stormed the show floor at E3 and strong-armed a few people to get right up close and personal with Nintendo’s brand new Wii U controller. The demo game required a lot of movement on the user’s part — there was a lot of shaking involved with controlling the character on the screen — but the interaction definitely looked like nothing we’ve seen before. The large touchscreen display was bright, too, and the controls are all comfortably within reach of your thumbs. We dig the white color of the controller as well, and it absolutely looks like a substantial high-end device. Hit the gallery below to see the rest of our hands-on images!

How much for one of those controllers? $100? I already have a hard time swallowing $60 for the 360. I like the idea, but I’m not so sure it will be cost effective.

      60 for a 360 controller? on what planet? . . .

For a wireless one, I remember it being close to that last time I bought one.

PS3 wireless controllers were pretty expensive too.

So does this just work with the Wii? Or is there a new system with it? No, I did not read the post.

…. how are you on a Tech Blog and not know what’s going on at e3? . . .

Hey, how about you stop being a douche and answer the question.

Google it… or here’s a novel idea “READ THE POSTS ON THE SITE” . . . there you go.

100% new console with power greater than ps360. It is 100% backwards compatible with wii tools and games as well as this new controller.

Is it heavy?  Can someone hold it away from their body (like most controllers) for an extended period of time?

    • Anonymous

It shouldn’t be too heavy.  If you think about it, it doesn’t have any real hardware inside of it.  It will have a battery and a touch screen, but other than that it is exactly like any other controller.  No processor, no graphics, no memory, etc…Tablets with all this stuff aren’t too heavy, so I imagine this controller isn’t.

looks Amazing, def didn’t expect this much!

the make or break will be the replacement cost of controllers if they can have a completive cost im sure it will sell like hot cakes. but i have a hard time seeing them come in under 99 for the controllers and i even have a hard time seeing them coming in at 99 dollars considering what they offer. but in none of the promo videos do you see more than one being used they emphasized it working with the wiimotes so that should tell us something right there

I can’t wait to buy this and see more details on the completely new revamped online system.

Wait, so what does that have to do with the iphone 5?  I’m not sure why a Nintendo post is on here….

    • Tblalande

Norm you just made my day!

    I’m so buying this

With the wirelessly mirroring the iPad 2 does or an update to AirPlay, a combination of an iPad and an A5 AppleTV could do basically the same thing…

Especially if the next iPhone also supported this.

    • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

iPhone/Pad2 can’t play Nintendo games or any high end 3rd party titles.

Content is king and in the gaming world Nintendo 1st party is best… coupled with the quality 3rd party titles, that Wii lacked, WiiU will surely dominate.

    White = High End

I am so effing stoked for this!!!  Cant wait till next year.  Wonder if it will work with netflix?  Maybe an eReader???

  • Trek7011

This will be interesting. Nintendo is not cool. Definitely not a lot of first-person shooters. And yett the Wii ate up the competition. Can nintendo do it again?

  • Sarina Ollie Adams

The controller looks cool but I can see the screen part being easy to break. Either way it’s still cool. Thumbs up Nintendo!

What about the weight?  Is the controller heavy?

  • Anonymous

The price of the controller may not be as expensive as we all think it will be.  The most expensive looking thing on it is the LCD touch screen (which is cheap in this day and age) , the camera is cheap to, gyro, accelerometer, etc are all common place and cheap components thanks to mobile devices.
