BlackBerry PlayBook updated to 1.0.5 (don’t get too excited)

Software

RIM on Tuesday announced the availability of a new software update for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. Before we get into all the details, we should note that this is not the major update PlayBook users have been waiting for that will enable email and PIM functions without the need to tether. Now that we have that out of the way, version 1.0.5 of RIM’s QNX-based operating system brings the following additions to the BlackBerry PlayBook: the Facebook app is now preloaded, in-app payment support has been added, Wi-Fi hotspot detection has been added, the status bar menu has been tweaked a bit and a few new languages are now supported. We’ve applied the update to our PlayBook as so far, everything is going just fine. If you haven’t yet received a notice letting you know that the update is  available, you can check for it manually in the device settings. Hit the break for RIM’s full press notice.

BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.0.5 will soon be available via a free over-the-air update. The easy-to-install software update brings several new features and performance enhancements to the BlackBerry PlayBook.

New BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.0.5 features:

  • Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook – The first Facebook app optimized for tablets now comes preloaded and introduces new features including video uploading, message deletion, Facebook search enhancements and more
  • In-App Payments Support – Enables developers to create apps for the BlackBerry PlayBook using the BlackBerry Payment Service, which will allow users to purchase enhancements within apps such as another level in a game or a new edition of a magazine
  • Additional Language Support — Updates language support to include: French, Italian, German, Spanish, Dutch and UK English

  • BlackBerry PlayBook Charging Enhancements – By simply touching the battery indicator on the BlackBerry PlayBook home screen, users can easily adjust the screen brightness or choose to restart, turn off, or put the tablet into standby mode.  Other charging improvements include the ability to charge the PlayBook while it is turned off, as well as an on-screen alert to notify users if they accidentally have plugged in an incorrect charger into their BlackBerry PlayBook
  • Video Chat Connectivity – Adds support for the TURN (Traversal Using Relay NAT) protocol, which enhances Video Chat connections between users on home, public and enterprise Wi-Fi networks
  • Wi-Fi Hotspot Detection – Automatic Wi-Fi hotspot detection in the BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.0.5 makes it easier to connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot (at a coffee shop or an airport, for example)

How to update to BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.0.5:

Users who purchase and activate a BlackBerry PlayBook tablet on or after Monday, June 6, will be automatically updated to v1.0.5 as part of the BlackBerry PlayBook setup process. Existing users will receive a software update notification on the BlackBerry PlayBook status ribbon, or they can check for the software update at any time in the settings menu under Software Updates.

I bet all 50 people are pumped right now

I think you left off several zeros. I like these frequent improvements to the PlayBook, instead of waiting months for carriers to approve and role out maintenance releases.

You’re right. All 5000 owners are pumped for this retard box.

Yawn….you’re a troll obviously since this has been selling like hotcakes!

lol don’t get too angry about an electronic device.  you might have a heart attack.  Or do.  Whatever.  retard

Either you’re an arrogant douche iPhone fag or an ignorant brain dead fandroid. Mind coming out of the closet and telling me which type of dumbass you are so I can bring out the proper BBQ and roast your stupid ass properly.

      • Applesucksfatties

        1. Can we knock off the “retard” comments as they are so very backwoods hillbillyish.   2.  People who actually want to get something important done buy Playbooks… iDouches who want to look cool and important by iMaxipads… version 1 or 2 (of which I really can’t tell the difference).  IMO, the iMaxi is just a glorified timewaster…. iFart app anyone?

      • Anonymous

As long as “getting something done” doesn’t include email.

  • QNX Please

Yet Apple finally gets a decent notification system, 3 years after the competition and BGR cream their pants….

    • Anonymous

Probably because Apple hasn’t spent the last 4 years doing the tech equivalent of soiling itself.

      • Applesucksfatties

Really?  What do you call the first 4 iterations of the iPhone?   Innovation at its finest, right?  HAHAHA   Speaking of innovation, have they fixed the antenna issue yet?

    • Douche

QNX is gay, and so are you

Are you a troll troll or a parody troll? I can’t tell.

As my grandmother used to say; if you dont have anything nice to say; don’t say anything at all.
BGR’s Disclaimer: I am paid by Apple, so here’s the latest RIM dirt…
haha…BGR; always good for a laugh.

He has no idea why RIM even launched it without email etc….do some homework and come back to me when you know your shit.

    • Anonymous

They launched it without native e-mail because their native e-mail client wasn’t finished. Not that it matters, since the PlayBook isn’t exactly setting the world a fire.

      • Rocker

Wrong…they launched it to appease the CIO’s who don;t want the ipad because the unreleased iOS5 is already jail broken and unmanageable.

iPhone Configuration Utility. Educate yo’self fool.

  • oneoffifty

What he neglected to report is th 2x speed for the bridged browser, the better memory management, and mainscreen appworld notifications, in addition to better overall stability.

    • http://twitter.com/CptMurderMarley Mr. Marley Jones

YES! But he couldn’t say that; it would somehow glorify RIM for this update. #BGRAintShit

  • Anonymous

Perhaps you should have also added (nothing new here) to almost every single iOS5 feature that was announced… BGR writers are all hypocrites.

  • Mo

“Don’t Get too Excited..” You just can’t resist huh??

BGR = Load of horse shit

    • Devon2000

I agree with you 110% BGR is getting ridiculous with being so bias to apple and all the damn RIM bashing, They are starting to remind me of FOX news when they have their daily Obama Bash fest

  • singhg

ohhh bgr missed to say…new os added over 250 features which other platforms have been using for ages…. BGR – APPLE OWNED AND OPERATED.

  • Droid doesn’t

Rename the site to iBGR already and play with your iosholes

    And don’t delete my comment

  • Anonymous

Haha so typical of BGR. This is no big deal but ios5 is breakthrough stuff. Oh and this is nothing big yet you do reviews of iPhone 4 cases. Haha. What a joke

    • Anonymous

Whats so freaking breakthrough about a pull down notifications system that looks like a refugee app from the Android store and a bunch of no brainer tweaks that users have been pining over since the iPhone first launched? Oh wait yeah I forgot iOS now allows syncing over wifi. Nice of Apple to finally come up with that bit of magic. I find it rather interesting though that the Cydia site has had apps like that available for awhile. As for cross platform device syncing Amazon already had that feature covered with their ereader. BGR needs to get some writers who have a brain and have the integrity to actually write the cold hard facts. Call it like it is BGR and stop ranting over tech toys like they’re the new holy grail.

      • Anonymous

My BlackBerry has synced over  WiFi for the past 2 years (or more).  Not even that is new.

  • keymaker

    I can’t believe they’re calling this a feature, LMAO.
    Wi-Fi Hotspot Detection – Automatic Wi-Fi hotspot
detection in the BlackBerry Tablet OS v1.0.5 makes it easier to connect
to a Wi-Fi hotspot (at a coffee shop or an airport, for example)

    • Jimmy K

       No you don’t understand.

What it is, is better wi-fi detection for the FIRST TIME you turn it on. So you boot up, and it automatically does an OTA update to the latest OS without plugging into your comp when you turn it on. You know, something that is coming with iOS 5 in the fall, but with iOS 5, I think it’s more magical or something.

  • Clarence Johnson

People get pissed when BGR announces Apple news but get even more pissed when they announce BlackBerry news because they *believe* is has a negative connotation to it?..

    Really guys?

No one can ever please you I guess…

And then they go on some big rant about how they are “done. and [they're] not coming back to BGR ever again”, like WHO CARES?

Am I the only one who is frustrated with the lack of knowledge pertaining to the article and flame wars between iOS, BlackBerry and Android users? YOU GUYS ARE GROWN MEN FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. The comments are never on topic, like this one :) and they somehow find their way into starting a “this company copied this company” argument and I just sit here like guys… the article was about an electric blanket… the hell does that have to do with anything?

    • Rocker

I have no intentions of not coming back to bGr……and you cant deny the fact that bgr creamed over notifications yesterday but a few back and since then has added in his little smirky comments towards RIM in every BB story….if you think otherwise….let’s see…

      • Clarence Johnson

I know, and that may all be true Rocker but what’s the whole point? articles in the paper, magazines and online sources are all generated by opinions. people shouldn’t be scorned for their own opinions. the whole iBGR thing is getting childish and has nothing to do with the article.

I feel like if people really had an issue, they should complain by hitting the “contact us” button on the upper right hand corner of the page instead of wasting bandwidth and putting their troubles in the comment section, further making no progress. I mean, the whole issue of BGR favoring Apple seems serious since this is all people talk about.

Give Apple its credit where its due; as with every other company. I feel like yes, they may have copied some ideas from other mobile operating systems but thats how companies thrive, borrowing / stealing ideas from one another. Its human nature. Its like saying “man.. you had a good idea. I am going to take it too”, almost like a pat on the back. Like when BlackBerry went and opened up their own app store on. No one went around saying “OMG! THEY TOOK THIS IDEA FROM APPLE!” but its weird that its the other way around. And I am truly sorry for getting off topic but I feel like all this needs to be said. I don’t know. Maybe I shouldn’t even be worried about all of this. It is a tech blog after all. I chose to view comments even though I know they will have nothing to do with the article. whatever…

Considering Jobs himself must have gave the writers at bgr a pretty good blowjob, I can see why they’re trashing rim more recently.

  • Steve Jenkins

Epstein, was the money shot from Jobs that good?

  • Max

BB morons getting panties in a twist. I can’t even call it nerd rage since true nerds move to new technology. More like stuck on stupid rage. Move out of 2001 idiots.

    • Tony

speaking of panties, should I return your moms to your house, or just leave them on the corner for her to pick up when she gets to work?

Will existing installed apps on the playbook be removed? Would i need to re-install them?

    • Jimmy K

       No.

  • DMG

Being a PB owner my opinion is that this update is total BS. Still no folders, Bridge is painfully slow, and no AutoCorrect. My Playbook will continue to gather dust until they address some very basic features that should have been on it when it launched.

    • Anonymous

Funny, this update has made my bridge MUCH faster.  Works fantastic.  I am very happy with it.

      • Cedric

Hey viper, when you updated your PB, did you have to re-install all your apps? Were the installed deleted?

      • Anonymous

No.  It did update my facebook app to the latest version.  Make sure you update bridge too.  Works great.  I like the new features, but I agree about the auto correct.  I wish it was for all typing.

      • Cedric

        Thanks man!!! appreciate it!!!!

      • Anonymous

Agreed. Having a wi-fi tablet that can use bridge to browse the net when not in range of wi-fi, is golden – the best part, no tethering fees. a 3g tablet without the price…after this update (and the bridge update on the phone that goes with it) bridge is simply awesome.

overall, this update is great and the OS is now rock solid. There’s definitely some groundwork in there for subsequent updates coming in the next few weeks (subtle changes here and there)

    • Anonymous

Try updating the bridge software on your phone too, Einstein. There’s basically no need to tether anymore with the drastically improved speed of the Bridge browser.

  • Playbook Rulez, ipad sucks

You are a AppleFanBoy controlled by Steve Jobs! Get a Life!

  • Jimmy K

Tried it out this morning. It’s a pretty good update. Everything seems to be a bit smoother, facebook runs well, bridge works better.

There are still some “big ticket” items outstanding (native mail, calendar, android support, auto correct in non-emails) but this seems to address a lot of the “small” things. Don’t think it’s fair to slam any update that doesn’t have the “big ticket” items, afterall, nothing was wrong with the 10000x iOS updates prior to the notifications, they were still useful updates.

Okay, I thought it was just me, but BGR is quite biased towards Apple. Is the site owned or sponsored by apple? Just curious.

RIM publicized the major updates. The fact is that there are numerous incremental improvements that make a huge difference.
