AT&T CEO: Our 4G LTE network is 2-3 years behind Verizon’s [updated]

Services

Speaking during a D9 press event in California on Thursday, AT&T Mobility’s CEO Ralph de la Vega said it will take AT&T between 2 and 3 years to bring its LTE network coverage up to a par with Verizon Wireless’ 4G offering. AT&T has already announced that it plans to deploy its 4G LTE network to five cities this summer, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. However, Verizon’s network is already available in 55 markets, it plans to deploy in 23 more this month, and the carrier has promised full 4G LTE coverage across its current 3G network by the end of 2013. According to CNN, Ralph de la Vega said AT&T “can’t say when” its 4G network will match Verizon’s but said “in the next two to three years they will probably be indistinguishable.” The carrier also reaffirmed that if its proposed acquisition of T-Mobile is approved, customers should see a large improvement the in overall quality and reliability of AT&T’s service.

UPDATE: AT&T spokesperson Seth Bloom provided BGR with the following comments via email:

We noted that your post about LTE today didn’t note Ralph’s point that AT&T has a solid, modern technology with HSPA+, so we didn’t need to move as fast as Verizon with LTE.  A bit more context for our network path can be found here… of course it includes LTE starting this summer with 5 cities (and additional 10 or more by the end of the year):

  • As AT&T builds out its LTE footprint, customers outside the LTE area will still have access to HSPA+, meaning consistently fast mobile broadband speeds.
  • AT&T’s HSPA+ network with expanded backhaul provides a great 4G experience with speeds up to four times faster than our already fast mobile broadband speeds. Also, more than 80 percent of the U.S. population is currently covered by AT&T’s HSPA+ radio network.
  • AT&T didn’t jump straight to LTE so that its customers would have a consistently fast mobile broadband experience. Customers of competitors who haven’t made the same upgrades as AT&T has will find that they’ll have fast speeds in LTE areas, but will see a steep drop-off in speeds when they leave LTE coverage zones. Plus, if they’re using voice and data simultaneously, one of those connections will drop off. AT&T’s customers will have a more consistent speed experience as they move between LTE and  HSPA+ coverage areas.

Well good thing I live in Houston, one of the first LTE metros for AT&T.  Once my contract is up next summer, I will be shopping my services between Big Red and Ma Bell.  I will say that is one advantage of AT&T, the speeds if you drop off an LTE coverage area.  Going from LTE to CDMA without simultaneous voice and data?  No bueno.  LTE to HSPA or HSPA+ with simultaneous voice and data?  Muy bueno.

Of course if you are in NY or SFC, you’ll go from LTE to GPRS…lol

But Verizon claims they will have virtually all of the U.S. covered with their LTE network by 2013…so almost no Verizon customers will ever “leave LTE coverage zones” by the time AT&T is finally expanding their LTE the same year. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, I recalled this solely from memory, so I could be off.

I’m guessing Verizon customers will have solid LTE coverage by then, as compared to AT&T’s which, like their 3G, is spotty.

This updated statement is BS.  Just say that you weren’t as prepared as Verizon for the next gen networks.  Sorry AT&T… when the LTE iPhone comes, you’re out of my life for good.

that spokes person sounds like he just used random phrases and buzzwords

80% of the population covered but they can only travel a few miles before they lose that signal and drop to EDGE or nothing at all.   Now their 4G/LTE will only be available in a couple of states for a year or so.    Great.  Verizon only covers 1/4 of my state and has no plans to build anything new, and T-Mobile has great coverage here, but only one city covered with 3G, so I’m hoping the AT&T/T-Mobile merger will go through and maybe that will help AT&T get its act together.

Is nohing but an idiot n greedy CEO doesnt know shit bout 4g. But im still enjoyn my Atrix even though i dont have 4g where i live.

Folks if you are expecting accurate reporting from bgr check who owns the site…AOL Huffington? Dishonesty is their charter.

Umm, what’s that got to do with them reporting what the man said? At least it’s not like Faux News where they make it up.

If AT&T is so far behind Verizon, why are the prices indistinguishable? Two-three years is an entire contract term.

Speed really means nothing if you get dropped calls all day. I had my iPhone since June 2007 and of course had no choice but At@t. I live in los Angeles and am a heavy phone user and had at least 20 dropped calls a day. Now I switched to a Verizon iPhone and have NO dropped calls a day unless the person on the other end had an AT&T phone. Today I bought 4 more iPhones for my family and am willing to eat the at&t early termination fee just so everyone can have great service. And AT&T has only gotten worse over the four years. My opinion is that they just did not want to spend the money necessary to build the needed number of cell sites to keep up with their number of subscribers. I talk to iPhone users all over the country and they all have lousy service. Expect a mass exodus from at@t
When the word gets around how much better Verizon iPhone is and the next generation phone is here.
I just hope verizon can keep up when they get all those new iPhone subscribers. And AT&T will learn the hard way that people want a clear signal and no dropped calls as ther first priority! And the government should not reward their horrible service with allowing them to buy t mobile. Four carriers are good for competition and keep prices down. Look what happened to gas prices when the government
Allowed all of the oil companies to merge over the last ten years. Less players and higher prices.

I’m in Los Angeles and haven’t dropped a call in months. Its the crappy iPhone that gives you dropped calls. I’ve never had a problem on a Blackberry for years now, a real phone for “heavy users”. The iPhone has had reception problems from day 1 in 2007.

There will never be a “mass exodus” from At&t because its catch 22 with any wireless carrier.

Really?? Blackberry is a real phone for “heavy users”? haha who are you kidding?.  All BB users do is chat on bbm and for business users, just emails because there is so much you can do with BB apps….wake up dude.  I myself gave up on BB because it made no sense to pay $30 data plan just to use bbm while with an android or iOS device you can get your money worth from the data plan.

How about they first work on bring their 3G, even 2G network up to industry standards and then they can worry about LTE.

  • Austin Texan

AT&T continues to defraud its customers and consumers by providing the worse possible network service of any the carriers out there.  Hopefully the acquisition between AT&T and T-Mobile won’t happen.  If it does expect to see huge issues with integration over the next 2 years.  If you think AT&T’s network sucks now, just wait and experience it while the integration takes place  Your looking at 2 years of miserable service.

  • Delacy Sanford

ever notice how most people complaining bout att dont even use it, and want everybody to switch to their carrier but hate the idea of a monopoly. But yet still dont realize that all US carriers suck. smh

  • Byron Dale

That’s a really good point. I do not want to have to go from LTE to 3G when 4G (HSPA +) is an option. Having the three choices is a very good idea. It’ll simply give a gradual decrease in speeds rather than moving as fast as “lightning” to as slow as a snail. I know at the moment our 3G speeds aren’t really that bad, but it will become just as unbearable as EDGE simply when we become more comfortable with faster speeds. THANK YOU At&t for making the transition the right way.

  • Tjb

Hspa + is a joke. Why is att calling it the 3g but that’s what t mobile calls there 3g. Both of them suck

  • clock

What people don’t understand is that there will be no need for VzW phones to go from 4G/LTE to 3G EvDO in a couple years, because the entire nation will have VzW 4G/LTE coverage by then…i.e. even better than their superior 3G EVDO coverage today.

This entire statement is 100% bullshit. AT&T doesnt HAVE HSPA+ service. If they did, they would wanna say WHERE they did, and compete against T-Mobile…I mean, after all they ARE STILL TWO COMPANIES right? AT&T acts like its in the bag and doesnt need to tell where HSPA+ is. Second, where AT&T internally thinks HSPA+ is available, doesnt mean it works. Not only do they not have the backhaul (this coming from one of the worlds largest most powerful telecommunications companies in the history of telephone) nor have they upgraded software at the towers where the backhaul exists. With that said, HSPA+ is NON EXISTENT on AT&T. Their HSPA network itself might as well be running as EDGE anyway.

Second, we all know AT&T didnt deploy LTE because they wanted to kill any and all competition of any and all other 4G technologies (ie, lets buy out T-Mobiile so they cant complete HSPA+ or LTE and blow us out of the water, since we certainly dont have the money to put Verizon out of business).

Lastly, who IS the CEO of AT&T? Is it Ralph or Randall? Both of them are assclowns that spout off anything about their company, much like Dan Hesse has in the past, and then contradicted themselves, only in this case Ralph and Randall look much more retarded doing it then former AT&T CEO Dan Hesse ever did or does now at Sprint.

    • clock

AT&T will never show you their 3G map or their 3G+ map.  VzW will be happy to show it to you, though

  • Joe Mama

I see consistent speed on AT&T’s network as I move around SF now. It’s consistently between slow and non-existent.

Who cares what they6 are going to do? How bout fixing what you already claim to have and what you charge for daily. It’s not their 4G or LTE it’s their ” inability to carry current coverages as they state they offer and do it well or even good… and they don’t! AT & T do you really want to increase your market share, keep customers and make your customers happy to use you as their mobile device provider? Then FIX what you have before you go out and spend a penny to add more of what you can’t do to what you already do badly!

  • Cajunnsc

Most CEO talk exist only for their large share holders thus meaningless to the rest of us. What do we want Mr. RDLV we want a system that is reliable and cost effective just as you want for your company to be perceived. Now that said, I give AT&T 2-5 years at this rate before it is no more.  So listen up share holders don’t be last holding the bag my friends. If you have stock in AT&T you can either push the company to do what is right, wise and beneficial or you can sit back and watch your investment disappear just like so many others have done. Then you can say ” if I would have known then what I know now” Well I am telling you and if you don’t listen then prepare your mouths to say these words again out loud. If I Knew Then What I Know Now ” !

BTW anyone that is more worried about color coordinating his tie with the set of which looks like the set of the Jet-sons BTW ! I am a bit worried is surely not in touch with reality. But in fact trying to create a world that simply does not exist except in their own mind’s eye. I am not impressed with the set nor the tie. In fact it is a bit creepy to say the least!
