Microsoft strikes deal to acquire Nokia’s phone business for $19B, insider claims

Business

According to industry insider Eldar Murtazin, Microsoft has struck a deal to purchase Nokia’s mobile phone business for $19 billion. Just two weeks ago, Murtazin — who has a proven track record and was the first to report that Nokia has struck a deal to use Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform on its smartphones — suggested that Microsoft and Nokia were about to enter closed-door meetings to negotiate a possible purchase that could close sometime before the end of this year. It could make sense: Nokia’s CEO is former Microsoft executive Stephen Elop, and the two companies have already reached a deal to create new Windows Phone devices, a dozen of which are expected to launch next year. We’ll have to see how this pans out, but a Nokia spokesperson had already addressed Murtazin’s earlier claims, saying “Eldar’s rumors are getting obviously less accurate with every passing moment.” Nokia declined to comment on Murtazin’s claim this time around.

Thanks, Johnny

Well, looks like that rumor has been fully refused. Lasted about 20 minutes, but the SEC investigation will likely last much, much, much longer.

Kudos to anyone who managed to sell some NOK on that short lived mini bounce.

You know, BGR the tag #Eldork will explain it all. Eldar is as much an insider as i am a respected tech blogger! He got some stuff right. big whoop. and many, MANY other things he got catastrophically wrong!

Why only 19B?, NOK market capital is 25B..

The rumour is that Microsoft is to buy just the mobile devices division of the company – the capital would remain in Espoo.

As a Nokia employee, I doubt this story is true, though have no insider information (not that I would share if I did). Eldar is one of those bloggers who has hit it lucky a couple of times, but has also struck out many more times. Guess which ones people remember?

June 1 (Bloomberg) — Nokia Oyj said speculation that
Microsoft Corp. has agreed to buy the Finnish company’s mobile-
phone business is “completely baseless,” denying a report by
the BoyGeniusReport website which cited blogger Eldar Murtazin.
Doug Dawson, a spokesman for the Espoo, Finland-based
company commented in a telephone interview today. Nokia shares
pared losses following the report and closed down 0.8 percent in
Helsinki trading today after earlier declining as much as 10
percent. Two people familiar with Microsoft’s plans, who
declined to be named, also said the speculation is not true.

What a way to create a link-bait title BGR.  Putting the “insider claims” before the pronouncement would make much more sense.

Well, we can be now certain of two things – either this latest MS shopping spree is going to help Microsoft become relevant again, or it will put the final nail in Mr Ballmer’s coffin at Microsoft.

I don’t care if you are a CEO/chairman of the board – once you spend $30B of your shareholders’ money, you better make it work, or your head is going to roll …

Stating this is fact in your title is total BS.  One person leaks this and you run with the story.  Hopefully you are right on this one.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, MadCent. com

“Nokia calls report of Microsoft deal ‘baseless’”

Where does BGR get their reports from????? They keep posting false report after false report… Remember the RIM PlayBook false report? Someone at BGR needs to be fired!!!

looking at Mr. Ballmer in the photo, I understand now why people are referring to Microsoft as a patent troll.

This could be a clever move by Nokia share holders! They may yet get to see a return on their money in the short term and still get out before the invertible happens. Pretty much everyone knows that there is no room in the market for another OS and that WP7 is nothing more than a dead duck waiting to sink. So when Nokia shocked the world and opted to back the also ran OS they effectively committed suicide. You only needed to read the Nokia development forums to see what was going to happen, talk about a lead balloon!  Naturally, the shares dropped and dropped, as it became more and more obvious to anyone who knows anything about the mobile market that Nokia at reached the end of the road. So what better way of getting out of this mess than to sell up to the only company left that really believes that WP7 has a any chance and then take your money and run. If I had Nokia shares I would be laughing all the way to the bank if this deal went though. Not so great if you have M$ shares. As it happens, I have neither!

Nokia R.I.P!  Anyone who takes on both Apple and Google will loose how ever deep their pockets are. Zune anyone?

This is what’s gonna happen… It’s going to fail, and they’re just gonna kill the company and wasted money like they did with Danger and Sidekicks

NEVER GONNA FREAKEN HAPPEN if someone was to beat Apple it would have been samsung…but you dont see that happening do you. The torch 2 might be close to succesful as in iphone but nothing will ever beat the iphone as long as they keep making newer iphones.

First Skype, now Nokia. Geez, Microsoft, you’re on a roll. I still have my doubts to where all this money is coming from, but I’ll look the other way in regards to that. Both Skype and Nokia deal with phone-like services. Is there any coincidence or relation there?

  • http://twitter.com/palfrei Peter Palfrei

Maybe now I´ll get a Nokia phone. I never liked them because they usually feel cheap (not all of them) and their design trend is annoying.

The Zune 2 was beautiful, of MS turns it into a phone I might get it.

    Or a HPalm phone.

I just got an $829.99 iPad2 for $83.37 and  an awesome  $1299 MacBook Air for only $111.93, its being delivered tomorrow. I would be an idiot to  paying high prices at places like Walmart or BestBuy when I even sold a 42″  HDTV to my boss for $600 that I only paid $77.53 for. I use  SnagBids.com

Nokia’s new CEO coming from Microsoft doesn’t this look like the plan was in the making some time ago and S.Elop was a mere trojan horse. And now the Nokia stocks tumbling to an all time low looks like the purchase won’t even cost Microsoft all that much.

Hypothetically, since this is all rumor from an analysts thats being repeated on a blog site… what do you people do when you find out most rumors are false?  Personally, I would feel very stupid if made a comment fully believing in rumor.  I guess most of you have the ability to shirk stupidity.
