Samsung preps 4G LTE Galaxy Tab for 2011, Galaxy S III for first half of 2012

It’s one thing to acknowledge that consumer electronics product lifespans are always shrinking, but it’s another thing entirely for a gadget maker to tell you when your new tablet will become obsolete before you even purchase it. The Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1 haven’t even made it off the starting line yet and Samsung’s mobile boss is already spilling the beans on the company’s next-generation devices. Samsung’s J.K. Shin told Dow Jones Newswires in an interview that Samsung plans to release a 4G LTE-equipped version of the Galaxy Tab tablet later this year. He also said that the third addition to the Galaxy S line, presumably dubbed Galaxy S III, will launch in the first half of 2012. We appreciate Shin giving us an insight into Samsung’s product roadmap, of course, but it’s also tricky business. We reviewed the Galaxy Tab 10.1 earlier this month and while we thought it was a solid offering from the Korean consumer electronics giant, it’s a tough sell knowing that a new version with blazing fast 4G LTE compatibility will launch just a few months later.

This is such a dumb post.  All mobile electronics manufacturers update their products every year.  If you’re buying a tablet now and you don’t understand that a new product with a faster processor and generally better specs is coming within a year you’re an idiot.  People buying tablets now are early adopters.  They understand what that means.

Yeah, but Samsung updates them 2-3 times a year.  Gotta love their enthusiasm towards DROID OS!

Yes norm it is pure genius to flood the market with more and more tablets that run three different operating systems and ten different oem ui’s. That’s why android os phones are a disaster right now.But hey at least you have your choice right? Even if it a complete mess.

A disaster? No, a disaster would be iOS market share. I wouldn’t exactly call Android phones a disaster when there flying of the shelves at record paces.

There is no such thing as DROID OS. Verizon is incapable of making an os.

This post, and mactard’s post… are the entire reason why Norm and Goofan still have funny posts.  That said, I feel that we should launch an investigation to ensure they aren’t replying to themselves…. tho I feel they’ll come up clean and we’ll all be saddened by the general stupidity amongst our populace.

Do or don’t you have 4G in the areas you use your device

Not even the same thing… the ones released next month are wifi only. So Samsung announces a 4g one for Verizon as well… that doesnt mean the wifi only ones are obsolete…

Actually it’s not hard at all to decide. I don’t want a carrier tablet, only wifi for me. Also Office Max is apparently going to sell a 4G Galaxy Tab 10.1 when it releases sometime next month, assuming for Sprint. The way I see it, if that is true then these are nothing more than Carrier based Tablets which isn’t much of an upgrade if the only difference is the radio IMO. Now if they came out and said our new quad-core GT 10.1 will be coming out later this year that’s a different story entirely.

Sounds to me like Samsung could simply launch a 4G capable version of the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 later this year. Instead of bringing entirely new products to market, customers will just have a choice of the WiFi-only version or 3G or 4G models.

This kind of pre-announcements simply lets customers who weren’t going to buy one because they’re looking for a 4G model know that if they’re patient they might be able to snag one. It’s not like there are a ton of other 4G capable tablets available yet.

This kind of pisses me off. Everyone has known for years that electronics are made obsolete fairly fast. Its done so quickly now that Best Buy and Sprint have buy back programs. But still to announce the next better phone and tablet even before your supposedly new one comes out is really pushing it. I mean what is the point? Buy this new one as soon as it comes out and then get the next six months later?
