Apple to announce back to school special at WWDC? $200 off an iPad or free iPod touch?

Exclusive

One of our Apple sources has informed us that they’ve been hearing Apple’s yearly back-to-school special will be announced at WWDC next month. We have been told Apple will continue to offer educational discounts on computers and either a free iPod touch, or $229 towards the purchase of any other iPod. Our source also let us know that there might be something new in the works, as well… they heard that it’s possible Apple might offer students up to $200 off an iPad with the purchase of a new Mac. If true, this would be pretty great deal. If only Apple could make enough of them…

Thanks, Lindsey S.!

I’d be great to get a free iPod touch. I will be purchasing a new MacBook Pro while I brush up on some of my studies going back to school. My daughter would surely appreciate apples generosity:)

  • Anonymous

damn, so would that mean I would need to find someone with a student card to take advantage of the deal?

    • ApplesNAndroids

Not necessarily. You could just say/select the school you “go to”. But, that would be lying. You’re decision though!

      • serpentor

I wouldn’t point this out otherwise, but since you said you’re going back to school…. It’s “your decision”.

        you’re = you are

        your = possession

  • Anonymous

Wait, why would they give a free iPod touch? Did I read something wrong? Do you have to purchase something to get this free iPod?

  • Anonymous

It seems like it is with the purchase of a Mac…is that true?

    • http://twitter.com/drdroo Droo

Yes.  that’s true.  You have to buy a Mac and have to qualify.  It’s similar to deals they’ve done around this time of year in the past, but with a bit of a twist throwing a discounted iPad into the mix.

    • Anonymous

Yes, like they do every year.

The only news is the possible iPad discount.

  • Anonymous

    Wow… now this is a deal…  wow… I cant wait… wow…  Spend $2000 on a laptop and get 200 off…  wow….

Or maybe, just maybe, buy another laptop, a Galaxy Tab 10.1, and a top of the line Android smartphone, a 32″ LED TV, and still have money left over…

    • SSH-To-HELL

      lol

      an iPad costs $499.

    • Kyle

… Wow … and all 3 of your items will break and never get an update… EVER…Wow…

      • Anonymous

In 2 years of owning Android devices not ONE has had any issues, break, or not received timely updates…  You listening to apple fan boi sites again?

I have an Android Droid X and if I could afford it I would smash it into the wall and get ANYTHING else, even to the point of going back to a regular phone.  Too many layers of CRAPware on the phone.  Android OS, Motoblur, Verizon’s crap, etc etc etc

Lest you forget, there are apple fan grls too!

I guess you never owned the Samsung Captivate, because I did.  the GPS never worked.  Non of the updates ever fixed it, Samsung wouldn’t replace it.  It took them almost 1 year to update it to 2.2 Froyo, and by then Froyo was almost a year old and 2.3 was already out.  I have never once had a problem with Apple replacing a phone when it has a problem.  They gave me a new 3GS when it had dust under the screen.  I went back to the iPhone because no company has better CS when it comes to replacing products and servicing products.  I’ve been an Apple user for the last 17 years and have never been disappointed in their CS.

      • http://www.brooskie.com Broo

Motorola Xoom Android 3.1 update; loaded with no issues.  Gingerbread for Droid X- no problems, runs much faster. Don’t plan on updating my TV (unless it is an update for the WebApps)

Updates for iPhone 4- generally only when Apple finds yet another security issue, radio problem or wants to slow down the jailbreaks.

Oh- and aren’t we still waiting on an iOS 4.3 for update for the iPhone 3G and an install of Snow Leopard for the G5 PowerMac?

Apple is a big corporate entity just like everyone else- just the fanboys are much less likely to think for themselves…

Let me guess. Arby’s is what you consider a upscale dining experience? Dam you lagdroids are some cheap fuks. If it’s free or cheap and lasts six months it’s for you.

      • Anonymous

my stuff lasts for years. Keep trying to convince yourself why you pay too much for crap.  You’ve been hook lined and sunk by Apple’s marketing.  silly sheep.

      • Anonymous

No I like to have my shit work and work well not half ass. And when I do have a problem if I can’t fix it myself a drive up the road to the apple store and it’s fixed or replaced. oh yeah I’m also RICH so I don’t have to settle for shitware like you do. Example….. android.

      • ….

who fucking cares if you`re rich? to me you are just a spoiled child (to macboy15)

      • Anonymous

whoa whoa lets leave arby’s out of this

? Lowest Mac price is $700 (Mac Mini) then you get $200 off an iPad, which start at $500…

      • Anonymous

I don’t think that qualifies for the promotion. Usually its on certain products or price threshold.

    • Godie

or Buy any PC oveer $699 and get an Xbox . thre is one that is specially good. Samsung 9 series… Coollll

    • Anonymous

Only high-end MacBook Pros cost that much. There’s such a thing as a 13″ MacBook Pro, the MacBook, and the Airs.

To start:  Was this BGR’s “Exclusive Apple News” that was posted on twitter?  Weak.

Next:  What good is getting money off an ipad when buying a macbook?  If I chose a macbook, I’ve determined a tablet is useless.

    • Joel

iPad is more portable and any notes/files/voice memos created can be synced to your MacBook when you get home or at your discretion it is useful for me and my studies.

      • Anonymous

“More” portable, yes, but not really portable.  At least not in the sense of being comfortable carrying it around outside your house.  That’s why mine has yet to see the sun :)

      • Anonymous

The iPad is the ultimate couch lounger.

Although it does seem like it would fit nice in a slim attache case or something similar. Like ultralight backpacking, it’s ultralight business-ing.

      • Guester

Let’s face facts.  The tablet market is a funny one.  I own an iPad (bought it for the “new” appeal) and I literally never use it.  Its horrible for reading outside, and surfing the net and/or typing documents is much easier on my macbook.  I should have never bought it and the question I asked myself prior to its purchase remains unanswered:  where does an iPad (or any tablet) fit in with my lifestyle?  I thought “lets purchase one and see” — still unsure.

      • Joel

Good point. I’m a pretty busy student. It comes in handy in lectures but when I’m out doing field labs I like perfer my MacBook pro. It just kinda fit better. To each their own

      • Anonymous

Someone in my family feels the same way – mixed feelings. I love it, and if I was starting from scratch, I’d purchase a desktop + iPad, instead of a desktop + laptop. If I was just getting one, I’d get a laptop.

I like Steve Jobs’ automobile analogy: the classic PC is like a truck, built for work, and iPads are like cars. Taking that a step farther, laptops are kind of cross-over vehicles in that they do work-and-play, but can’t do super heavy work and aren’t nearly as portable as a tablet. It’s just switched around that laptops came before tablets; I wonder if it was the other way around, if we’d be having a discussion about the merits of a laptop.

“I don’t see why I need a laptop. It can’t process huge files as well as my desktop, and it’s not as convenient for browsing the web or watching movies as my tablet. It’s kind of a tweener.”

They have been doing this for years now. Buy a mac get a ipod. Nothing new to see here move along now…

    • Anonymous

+1 this has been going for years. BGR makes this sound like a deal when Apple gave students a choice between free iPod or $200 off iPad

You know what’s a good deal BGR? $200 off iPad AND a free iPod

      • Anonymous

Ehm… That’s what this article is about… Free ipod +200 off an you ipad

      • Anonymous

no. it says.. $200 off an iPad ORRRR free iPod..

  • Anonymous

Apple has always given student discounts…pretty cool with the touch. And if your buying a 2000 dollar computer, saving 200 allows you to get some accessories to protect your investment.

–___–  what about the people who bout their Mac in March

thanks for not calling it an “iTouch” :)

Should be interesting to see how that all turns out. Wow.

  • Isalty

Where is all this 2000 dollar laptop crap coming from? Apple has two laptops that cost half that, and the Pro is only a but more. You think most students want a 17 inch notebook to lug to class?

  • Anonymous

$200 off an already overpriced machine or a new X-Box? I’ll take the X-Box please.

    • Anonymous

      The iPad is overpriced?

    • Anonymous

If you think the iPad is overpriced then you must be buying Toy Kid tablets from Walmart

  • Brian292929

I am by no means an apple fan boy…I have a Windows PC and laptop along with a 2008 Macbook.  Saying that, I will never buy another Windows computer.  The Mac operating system is so much more user friendly.  I love not having a registry.  My Windows computers always slow down over time and then require a format to get the speed back.  My Macbook runs like it did the day I got it…3 years later.  I look forward to the Back to School promotion.

    • Absolutely Certain

So long as you don’t want to do anything complicated, like actually transfer stuff onto your iDevice.

  • http://twitter.com/Sirius_Rich Sirius_Rich

I already have an iMac configured in my Apple Cart and 16 gig of Crucial RAM coming my way.  I am just waiting for the promotion to be announced.

    • Guest

16gb of ram is overkill times 20.

      • Guest

        Correction: overkill times ~4

  • http://profiles.google.com/mariokid21 Sean Bilstad

You already get virtually 200 off when buying a mac from Amazon without the tax, well at least if you live in California.

  • HarvieBirdman

Do we get the iPod for free, or do we need to buy a Mac first?

  • http://www.thegraphicmac.com JimD

Wow. The comments on this site are nearly as bad as TechCrunch.
