Sony now offering free identity theft protection to PSN and Qriocity customers

Software

Sony has made good on its promise to offer free identity theft protection to customers whose private information was stolen during a major security breach of its PSN and Qriocity networks. If your account was compromised, you just have to provide the email address that was used to register for Qriocity or PSN, and Sony will provide a free activation code for AllClear ID Plus within 72 hours. AllClear ID Plus will offer free ID theft alerts and will help Sony’s customers get in touch with fraud investigators, should the need arise.

Offering extra security to ppl after their infor was already taken…isn’t that kind of redundant.

      Well, at least Sony’s trying…

At this point i think they are just trying to save face, but i do agree.  Doing something to atone is better than not doing anything at all.

So how does one verify if their information was truly stolen? Does this just mean that it’s for anyone who had a PSN account when this all happened ?

Yes.  My identity was not stolen (I’ve never purchased anything using PSN), however, I’ve had an account since I purchased a PS3 when the 2nd gen units (80 gig) came out.

That said, I applied for the code by simply putting my email address into their request page a few days ago.  Today, my activation code arrived.  Neat.

Oh Sony, why is the page where I enter my email address for this ID protection not SSL secured?

So does this “protection” apply retro-actively if your info was stolen?  If not, what good does it do…guess they continue to get hacked on other sites too…seem to never learn
