Microsoft says Ballmer’s Windows 8 in 2012 comment was a ‘misstatement’

Computers

During a press event in Japan recently, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said that Windows 8 would would launch sometime next year. His firm says otherwise. “It appears there was a misstatement,” a Microsoft spokesperson recently said in a statement. “We are eagerly awaiting the next generation of Windows 7 hardware that will be available in the coming fiscal year. To date, we have yet to formally announce any timing or naming for the next version of Windows.” Despite Microsoft’s statement, we could still hear more about Windows 8 much sooner — even if it doesn’t actually launch in the coming fiscal year. “As we progress through the year, you ought to expect to hear a lot about Windows 8,” Ballmer said in his speech. “Windows 8 slates, tablets, PCs, a variety of different form factors.’ According to ZDNet, we could see an early build of the operating system as soon as the D9 conference, which begins on June 31st.

  • Crenshaw’s Surprise

I will bet everyone in the world right now, one million dollars each, that Windows 8 comes out in 2012. And imagine that… a favorable Apple article ensued by Microsoft bashing. Not on BGR… Say it ain’t so! Prejudicial blogging at its finest. Keep up the bad work, BGR. You’re #112 in my book.

Do you visit the sites of the other 111 too, or do you single out BGR because of its “prejudicial blogging”?

      • Crenshaw’s Surprise

Both, yeah, whatever. Not sure what your point is, so you failed. Welcome to BGR, you must feel right at home.

Nah…the question is: why is he still leading Microsoft?

      • Sal

Because he is producing billions of dollars for Microsoft. Hate all you want, Microsoft is still number 1 software giant in the world. Just because the phone divison is doing bad doesn’t mean that the guy can’t lead. Pc are selling like hot cakes, xbox with kinect are doing great and the server division are doing great also. Wp7 is just starting just like andriod phones few yrs ago. T-mobile was the only 1 to pick android and look where it is today.

      • Anonymous

because he created multiple divisions within microsoft that generate over $1 billion each, drove bing to over 30% marketshare, created xbox, xbox 360, xbox live largest gaming console network 40 mill strong, IE9 +ie10 fastest browsers, windows 7 best selling os ever with 90% marketshare in desktop

        need i continue?

There is a specific reason why Bill Gates was a much better CEO than Ballmer.  It’s called restraint.  Ballmer is so set on eclipsing Gates that he doesn’t realize how much of a douche he really is.

    • Anonymous

I thought he was more set on besting Jobs?

So they are already behind schedule?

  • LDMartin1959

Sounds like more of the single greatest product from Redmond:  vapor-ware.

  • Steel

    1.  Ballmer is clearly out of touch.

    2.  But more importantly, can you imagine Apple releasing a statement like this about what Steve might have said?  Would. not. happen.  If he said it, then they would make it happen.  Of course, he’s not an out of touch business-type.  And they’re not a company w/ everything but direction.

I still don’t see the story in this. The calendar year 2012 and the fiscal year 2012 can be two different things. If I remember right, MS’ fiscal year for 2012 ends before the calendar year 2012; I think it ends in June 2012. The spokesperson specifically referred to the fiscal year, so it’s possible Ballmer meant the calendar year and that it is true, except MS doesn’t want to slow current sales.
