AT&T to deploy 4G LTE network in five markets this summer

mobile

AT&T confirmed on Wednesday that it will deploy its 4G LTE network in five markets this summer, including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio. The carrier did not specify additional markets slated to be rolled out in 2011, but it did say 10 additional markets will be deployed this year and 70 million Americans will be covered by the end of 2011. By contrast, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network is currently available in 55 markets and it expects to deploy in 23 more markets next month. AT&T said it expects its network to offer LTE data speeds on a par with its competitors. Hit the break for AT&T’s full press release.

AT&T’s 4G Evolution

Dallas, Texas, May 25, 2011

By John Donovan, AT&T Chief Technology Officer

AT&T has delivered five mobile broadband speed upgrades in recent years, including our HSPA+ deployment last year. And average nationwide speeds on the AT&T network have increased – more than 40 percent over the past two years alone.

The next network evolution will arrive this summer with the addition of LTE in five markets – Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta and San Antonio. We plan to add another 10 or more markets in the second half of the year, and cover 70 million Americans with LTE by year-end. We also have plans to add 20 4G devices to our robust device portfolio this year, with some of those being LTE capable.

We’re positioning to deliver a great mobile broadband experience in the near term with HSPA+ and a growing LTE footprint.

We’ve invested $75 billion in our wireless and wired networks over the last four years – more capital invested in the U.S. than any company in any industry. And we plan to invest $19 billion in our wireless and wireline networks and other capital projects this year. The investments we’ve made to evolve our mobile broadband network in recent years, plus what we have planned for the future, put our customers in position to benefit fully from a host of coming mobile broadband innovations.

Well, NYC doesn’t even have reliable 3G yet.  Baby steps, baby steps.

With LTE, AT&T can now drop calls even faster.

Verizon rules the air in this one. This is exactly why I left AT&T for Verizon!!! Oh, and because Verizon does not drop calls and they offer the unlimited data For their smartphones!!!

      Not for long.

      • Sal

Well no droped calls for Verizon so thats not gonna change. Verizon still offers unlimited 4g data until this day.

sorry to burst you bubble but this will be changing sooner then you think

      • A_g_ness

Well, the fact that Verizon does not drop calls that won’t change. They currently have the unlimited data and until that changes they have complete bragging rights over the lame service that AT&T offers to it’s cheated customers.

These are all areas where they have plenty of 850 spectrum.

The ability to launch new/cutting edge technology (even or especially if not ready for the average consumer or prime time) is a God-Given talent of the Goofan (aka Apple Hater) universe!  That said, AT&T being late to the party because they are aligned with Apple is no surprise to me!

Hey AT&T… Your late. Verizon is killing in the 4G deployment. Yet again verizon will have the most stable solid network in America

Been with T-Mobile for a very long time. I’m getting very sick fast speeds, over 6.5mb download and 1.7mb up. I live in a highly populated suburb of Boston where AT&T is listed in their coverage map with very strong Network. I wanted to see just what their service is like in my area, I wanted to see how the AT&T Network would work if the buyout went thru. Talk about slow, Ii tried AT&T on 3 different phones in my area, getting on average 750kbps down and a pathetic 300kbps up. I hope this buyout is burned. This was bad, dropped calls, loosing service, not just in my neighborhood but all the way around Boston area. AT&T has the worst speeds and coverage then any other carrier in my area. Boston is a very big area for all carriers. There is just no excuse.  I spent hours on the phone with tech help and talk about arrogant, I was just shocked, seriously, I was really hoping for a strong signal with great coverage. Everything failed, Thank God for T-Mobile. There is just no comparison, T-Mobile blows them away in all areas, Network speed, coverage and customer service. Say it again, THANK GOD FOR T-MOBILE.

Will be interesting to see how they compete with Verizon overall.

Wow, only 5 cities? VZW rolled out in 30. This is pretty pathetic AT&T and I’ve been a customer for 5 years. I guess I can’t complain too much as I get 4-5Mbps down and 1.5Mbps up, but gosh darn it, Phoenix better be lit up by the end of the year!

    LOL!!! Bullshit…. when pigs fly.

These are your first 5 cities………No NYC, DC, LA……..FAIL!!!

  • xxdesmus

How about your fix your shit in NYC or San Francisco first guys. Verizon is going to continue to kick AT&T’s ass on LTE.

  • JD

Sorry AT&T, but you really suck. I’ve been with AT&T (Cingular) for about 9 years now. I’ve only had 4-5 dropped calls in my area. However, the data speed is ridiculous. For the past 6 months my usage keeps going down, cause it takes minutes to load a web page.
AT&T told me 2 months ago they know there is a issue, & that they are upgrading the towers here. The fix isn’t planned to be started until September. Really 6 more months to wait. How about your customers wait 6 months to pay you. In the mean time I can’t use the feature I pay for every month.
It makes me sick to see 4G commercials when half there network is old out dated EDGE, that is so bogged down loading a web page is a miracle.

Really people….I have verizon and I have at&t one for business the other for personal they both drop calls. Both have good data speeds but it all depends where your traveling. Both competitively will work on their network but I have to say the Verizon customer service stinks in comparison to at&t.

    • jason

I agree Verizon blows with their customer service!!!!!!!

      • Butwhat

Wait verizon has customer service?could of fooled me the last million times I had to deal with them. Sick of big red as of right now.

  • drew dogg

Wait but everyone’s always bragging about ATT Tmo hspa+… Idgi? I thought hspa+ was SO good?! Lmao good luck playing catch up now. VZW=75%LTE.
