Verizon’s Motorola DROID 3 specs leak

mobile

We’ve already seen a few images of Motorola’s unannounced DROID 3 smartphone — expected to hit Verizon Wireless in the near future — but now a few new specs have surfaced, too. According to TechnoBuffalo, the DROID 3 could launch in June and it will offer a 4-inch display with 960 x 540 qHD resolution, a dual-core processor, HDMI-out, and an 8-megapixel camera that’s presumably capable of recording HD video. Unfortunately, it doesn’t appear that Verizon will outfit the DROID 3 with support for its 4G LTE network, so it’s going to be more of an incremental update to a family that’s already starting to feel a bit stale.

    OMG! A must have IMO!

Certainly a must have for Android lovers that want QWERTY!!!!

    • Alex

      Not without the 4g! D:

  • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

please hurry up and release this thing so I can go to Verizon and leave my EVO behind.

Wow like had the first DROID great phone hope I can get this soon!

These specs are not new.  Anyone who pays close attention to this stuff has known all of this since February/March.

If it’s not 4G, why bother releasing?  VZW’s Android stable is already saturated with various combinations of hi-res, keyboard, 1ghz+, 3G-only phones.  I’d love to see it pushed off a few months, update the specs even further, and have it get a 4G radio.  I’m still holding out w/my Droid 1!

If you want to combine all of the features you mentioned, the Droid 2 Global and the Droid Pro are the only phones that fit the bill.

I’m sorely disappointed at the lack of 4G, though. I guess, with all the 4.3″ monsters coming out, who could possibly think a 4″ screen and a hardware keyboard deserve 4G oh wait that’s right THE FUCKING SAMSUNG EPIC 4G. Sorry, sorry… I’m just a touch bitter.

I thought the Droid 3 was going to be everything the Droid 1 was, only with improved hardware and more Gs. Instead, it’s just a warmed over Droid 2. I mean, I like improvements as much as the next guy, but you can’t make all this noise about 4G and then not make it available on what looks to be the only good phone you’re going to release with a keyboard.

    • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

First of all, there really aren’t that many keyboard Android devices that are NICE. Also, some markets (like mine) won’t get LTE for quite some time, as in probably when it’s time to upgrade again, so it doesn’t really matter if this phone has LTE or not.

Edit: It doesn’t really matter to people like me that won’t get LTE for awhile that is.

      • http://twitter.com/SJFee Sean Fee

Fair point – I continually forget that 4G won’t be fully rolled out till sometime in ’13.

But as Squabe said below- if VZW is going to make as much noise about 4G as they are, what does it hurt to add it to the next flagship Droid?  It’ll still run on 3G.

      • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

        The funniest part?

I wouldn’t be complaining if Moto put LTE in the Droid 3 – at least I can use it when I visit my buddies in LTE markets! :-D

But 99% of the time I’d be stuck on 3G… :-( At least I have my 20 mbps connection at home (yeah still not the fastest, I just can’t bring myself to pay $123 for 107 mbps – does that make any sense? We have 107 mbps for home but we don’t have WiMax or LTE or even HSPA+ [I think].).

      • http://twitter.com/SJFee Sean Fee

@Rob Sheesh – I barely crack 10mbps at home on wifi.  Even 3G isn’t 100% reliable; I’m always hopping between 1x and 3G, esp. in buildings and exiting subways.  Crammed NYC airwaves, of course.  That’s the other reason I’m itching to upgrade to a 4G phone; those airwaves aren’t that saturated. Yet.

I live in a 4G area, and I see no need to pay more for a 4G phone.
Would I like Droid3 to have 4G?  Sure.
Will I dislike the terrible battery life on 4G?  Yep.  (I know it can be toggled, but I don’t want to have to mess around with that every time I enter/exit my bunker of an office, which gets 1-2 bars of LTE if it is lucky.)Honestly, for basic web surfing, google chat, and email, which is what I use my phone for, 3G is fine.  Anything more demanding, I ether use wifi, or I get out my laptop and the 4G card.I want Droid3 for the higher resolution and better keyboard.  It would also be nice if it were vanilla Android and unlocked bootloader, but I’m not holding my breath on that given Motorola’s current track record.

    • blechhhh

because some people want a phone that will have a battery that lasts a full day, i work for verizon, and all of our 4g phones will die within a day, plus with 4g not everywhere yet, some people figure why bother…

I can’t see Verizon / Motorola allowing this flagship device to release in the midst of a huge 4G push without 4G.  I think that would be a poor executive decision.

    • Anonymous

It looks like they don’t consider this a flagship device. As far as Motorola goes, it seems like the Droid Bionic is their next heavyweight. Droid 3? Apparently, they can’t conceive of people wanting a hardware keyboard and 4G at the same time.

Motorola is doing their level best to ensure that they never get my money again. I guess it’s time to capitulate. You don’t want my money? Fine. I’ll give it to HTC. Or Samsung. Or LG.

      • Anonymous

Hopefully one of those manufacturers will make a vzw slider. They have yet to produce one except HTC with the Merge…which could have been beast if it had LTE and front facing camera.

      • Anonymous

The Droid 2 wasn’t a flagship either.  It was released a month after the Droid X with virtually no advertising whatsoever.  I wouldn’t be surprised if the Droid 3 goes the same route.

      • Anonymous

Yeah… you’re probably right. That makes me bitter. Droid 1 made me happy. Droid 2 made me happy, although not as happy as the Droid 1 did. For a brief moment, I was in my fantasy world where the Droid 3 had an unlocked bootloader, was easily rooted, etc., while having all that horsepower and all the Gs a man could ever want.

Good thing my contract isn’t up for a while. I’ve been tempted to buy a phone retail before, but the way Motorola is acting, this clearly isn’t going to be one of those times. They’re putting this out like 80s horror movies: once a year, no matter what, and always disappointing when compared to the impact of the original.

I have an honest questions for Android Users.
How can you ever buy a device without being afraid of it being obsolete in a month or two?
Not trying to start a flame war. just asking.

    • Anonymous

I can do it the same way that I can buy parts for a PC without being afraid of it being obsolete in a month or two. The assertion that seems to be (erroneously) made is that, simply because something a little bit newer has come out, everything that came out before it is obsolete and worthless.

Let’s say a new phone comes out. It’s got a Quadrant score 5% faster than mine, doesn’t feel any snappier, and isn’t significantly better in any major way. According to you, my phone is obsolete. According to me, there’s just something slightly newer out. There’s always something slightly newer out. That’s the nature of technology.

    • David

But…if you buy an iPhone, it’s *already* obsolete.  There’s *already* something out there with better specs…you don’t even have to wait a month or two.

Why doesn’t everyone understand that 4G is not a dealbreaker to the entire nation? Most people are satisfied with their 3G service and/or 4G is not available all over the country. Being someone who lives in a 3G area, this phone looks wonderful as Verizon doesn’t have many QWERTY Android phones worth talking about. I don’t know about you bit I think America is getting more and more impatient and wants things quicker and quicker. Remember a couple years ago where everyone thought 3G was super fast and the greatest thing since sliced bread? The Motorola Droid has been a workhorse for me. I love it, it’s style, and everything it can do. I look forward to this new edition. Just saying…

    • Anonymous

I know it’s not a dealbreaker to the entire nation. But as someone living a 4G-rich environment… I’d love to have it.

Also, 3G was awesome. But streaming YouTube on Verizon’s 3G speeds isn’t very fast or very good looking. 4G streaming, on the other hand, is amazing. We want it because it’s new. It’s the nature of tech. If you’re not interested in the latest and greatest all the time, I’m frankly not even understanding how you got to this website.

      • Mercado

Sqube, I can see you being the guy who gets impatient in the McDonald’s drive thru line because it’s taking so long but when you get your food, you complain that it doesn’t taste fresh.

I think you are a douche bag and an a–hole. I personally came to this website to learn more and enjoy the discussions about new technology. You are right, I am not interested in the latest and greatest. I am sure you are only interested in watching 4G streaming YouTube so Rosie Palm and the 5 Fingers have better (sorry, I mean amazing) data for the Spank Bank.

      • Anonymous

Actually, I don’t really mind the wait in the drivethru unless it’s really long. Like, 10-15 minutes. Anyway, you’re interested in learning about — and talking about — the latest and greatest, by your own admission. I’m interested in learning about — and talking about — the latest and greatest. Unless I’m missing something, we’re both in agreement. So I don’t know what made me a douchebag and an asshole.

Also, why would I watch porn on my cell phone when I could just watch it on my 23″ monitor? That’s just crazy talk.

    • Trob6969

I have the droid 1, love everything about it except interenal memory. As far as I’m concerned, ram memory is the deal-breaker. Most people don’t realize that high ram memory is MORE important in a smartphone’s response time to your commands than 4G, as far as running apps. I’d be satisfied with 3G web connection speeds if moto gave droid 3 at least 1gig ddr2 ram.

Mamma comments to go with your usual constant love of ball sucking blow job comments!  Your mamma told me last night you like to douche in your Papanus.

        Big douche troll.

      • RDiddy

        Worst.  Troll.  Ever.

  • B-Rose

This would absolutely be my next phone if it had 4G.  HOW can they be launching new high end phones like this (and the Droid X2) without LTE?  So stupid.

  • http://profiles.google.com/mdhedley Mark Hedley

Verizon hardware manufacturers need to start focusing more on 4G. The belief seems to be that because 4G is not rolled out everywhere they can wait to focus on that feature. The reality is that in the 2 year contract model we are talking about phone’s who’s lifespan stretches to 2013. As a result they are basically including obsolescence with these new 3G devices and not price differentiating them from 4G hardware.

  • drew dogg

How bout ffc? Yeah w/o 4g not much going on there esp if its MOTO ninja blur or whatever they calling their new lay out.

  • Jon

Some people dislike the lack of 4G. Remember , however, that it’s not available in all areas right now. And, most people turn it off anyways because it is too much of a drain on the battery.

  • Keith1212

I want a vertical slider. Like a Torch or a Pre. I’d take a WebOS phone with this form factor as long as it was 4G capable but I’ll settle for 4G Android (which is still better than most.)
