Foxconn explosion could cut 500,000 iPads from production

mobile

According to a new report from IHS iSuppli on Tuesday, the recent explosion at a Foxconn factory could result in iPad 2 production losses for Apple. Despite reassurances from the manufacturer that production will not be affected — most iPad 2 units are built at Foxconn’s Shenzhen plant, which was not the site of the explosion — IHS iSuppli believes that “[Foxconn's] view is dependent on a return to full production pending the results of an investigation.” If there’ are any delays, however, iSuppli argues that the explosion could cost Apple as many as 500,000 iPad 2 units. “The impact of this disaster will only last for the short term, given that there are more than 10 factories in the Foxconn Chengdu plant, and because the explosion occurred on the third floor of one of the buildings,” IHS iSuppli said.

You know 3 people died and 16 were injured right, who cares if Apple is short 500,000 ipads, they are just fancy toys. Foxxconn could care less about it’s employee’s should be the real story and a continued spot light on Apple and Foxxconn’s business practises should remain.

This is a tech news site… not a human interest site.  But you’re right…. the loss of life is never something that should be ignored on any news site.

On a side note… 500,000 iPads is only a 10 day supply for Apple.

Apple and Foxconn should be shut down on human rights violations. Companies like HTC, Samsung, and LG with leadership from a true humanitarian company like Google would never have anything like this happen.

      • Michael Scrip

Foxconn doesn’t only build for Apple… many other companies use Foxconn for manufacturing.

You can’t tell me that Foxconn employees are miserable building iPhones…. but down the hall they are happy as clams making Dell computers, the Nintendo DS and the Amazon Kindle.

        Dumbest thing I ever heard!!!

Some people use this site for tech and stock news. Some people use it to bash technology they aren’t invested in. some people like to wine. I am in the first group the rest of you should go elsewhere.

    whoa

Sad part is, first thing I thought was someone tried to off themselves and take a bunch of people with them.

  • ManGenius

I wonder if Boy Genius works in any of Foxxconn’s labor camps.

Good job worrying more about iPads than people in this article.

This blog is going downhill fast… started right at the acquisition. Figures.

Maybe it’s because I’m new here, but most of the content is just links to other reporting – essentially stuff I’ve seen (much earlier) at other tech sites.

God forbid the world have 500,000 fewer iPads. If I had to choose between 1 human life and every iPad on the planet, I would choose life.

Ever see that episode of South Park where Cartman
buys a failing amusement park and then limits the number of people who
may enter per day–thereby creating entrance envy? iApple
should allow shipments to slow, stores to sell out, lines to form, hype
to build, bidding wars to commence, rumors to surface, and hysteria to
ensue. The majority of consumers outside of China will never
really realize any effect of the explosion. All anyone will see is
either a Out Of Stock sign or names on a waiting list. Those are 2 sure
fire ways to manipulate a consumer into thinking the iPad is so insanely
popular and god-like that they might actually be able to justify their
excessive cash shell-out, time wasted thinking about or waiting for, or
just unreasonable excitement (over something iApple will be replacing in
6months anyway). Don’t take me as an iHater; iProducts are iDesirable. I’m an iCynic. Won’t this little ‘accident’ be great for business?  Isn’t it essentially what
the entire research, marketing, and sales departments of iApple’s
      company are built upon anyway?

Dude you just won today’s award for being the biggest stupid fuck on the whole site. You must be American, live in the deep south, and think fucking your mom and sister is normal.

makes you wonder if apple didn’t blow the place up themselves, huh?

  • Anonymous

You guys (BGR) can’t even be bothered to mention the human impact this had? More concerned w/how Father Steve will feel? Sad.

  • Gmail209

Looks like you will have to wait longer for your iPad 2 Norm.

OH YEAH??? THAT IS SO HILARIOUS CONSIDERING PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES.

      EAT SH!T YOU LOSER!!

      • Generatione

      • Cer

        I heart you.

What “recent explosion”? I didn’t see anything about it on BGR.

But thanks for letting us know that 3 lives = 500,000 iPads. I’m looking forward to the analyst post backing that up.

  • xxdesmus

You’ve got to be kidding me … not a single mention regarding the fact that 3 people (last I heard) lost their lives in this explosion.

But yes, you’re right… the biggest concern here is that fewer iPad 2s will be produced.

  • Cer

BGR: Do you have a moral compass? If so, where is it? Is it hiding behind the excuse that you guys are just a tech site, and don’t feel it’s your place to address extremely weighty moral issues, even though those issues are irrevocably tied to the products you discuss, review, promote, advertise, and profit from on your site?

  • Anonymous

Why is the focus of the potential impact limited to Apple? Other big tech companies use Foxconn.

    • Anonymous

      Because its BGR.

      • Anonymous

It’s not just BGR. It’s the media.

        Apple-related news sells.

    ‘The impact of this disaster’???
This is no disaster, this is what you get when you operate sweat shops.

Disasters happened in Missouri this past Sunday and in Alabama last month.

    • Anonymous

U sick racist fuck! People died in both cases. Pray no one in ur family is killed in a non “disaster”

  • Anonymous

Apple… bring these manufacturing jobs back to the USA !

    • Anonymous

Do you know anybody who wants to work as cheaply?

It’s simple economics. That’s what you get with capitalism.

      • Anonymous

Congrats on having big business fuck you in the ass. Hope you don’t get a kink in your lower back from being bent over for so long.

  • PpxRty

It’s time for Apple to move all production back to the US.
