Barnes & Noble announces the all new NOOK

Breaking

Barnes & Noble on Tuesday unveiled its all new NOOK eBook reader, and to say it’s an improvement over the previous-generation model is an understatement. This new version replaces the older greyscale model, not the still-young NOOK color, and it features a major improvement we probably all saw coming… a touchscreen. The eReader sports an on-screen keyboard and it also allows readers to look up words or take notes with simple taps on the beautiful E Ink display. The new NOOK features just one button compared to the Kindle’s 38, which obviously simplifies the user experience significantly. More importantly, the new NOOK can last up to two months on a single charge — double the battery life of Amazon’s Kindle. Other nifty features include a new proprietary dissolve transition that takes readers from one page to the next, and social media integration that allows users to share recommendations via Twitter, Facebook and more. Of course the new eReader also features Wi-Fi connectivity and owners can enjoy free hotspot access at all Barnes & Noble stores as well as every AT&T hotspot across the country. The new NOOK will retail for $139.99 when it becomes available on June 10th from Barnes & Noble, Best Buy and more. Pre-orders are available immediately.

      CAN’T WAIT!

I wonder will it be resistant fingerprints all over the screen? That could make it look a little nasty after a while.

    • Cer

Nasty or tasty, depending on what you’re eating when you’re turning the pages. Yum!

Looks great to me.  I love my Nook.  I don’t like Amazon due to their proprietary nature.  This is a great device for those who want a dedicated e-reader.  I love my Nook Classic because I can read it outside.

I didn’t want to go Kindle because of the closed environment and lack of ability to read ebooks checked out from public libraries.  I wound up going with the Sony Reader because I loved the touchscreen and thought a physical keyboard on an e-reader is a complete waste of space 99% of the time.  If this was out at the time, I definitely would have gotten it instead of the Sony at under half the price.

Hey, guys, a simplified experience doesn’t always/automatically make for a *better* one. I have found the Kindle to be remarkably simple and intuitive to use, in spite of all those “confusing” buttons.

    boo, AT&T…

your dumb, it only uses ATT WiFi if you are ever out and have the need to download a book or what not

AT&T has actually been great on the Nook Classic!

How come no one has mentioned that there’s no 3G? This is a wifi only
device. That’s a huge disadvantage. You’re at the airport, about to get
on a flight. The wifi isn’t free, but you want to download a book.
    You’re screwed.

…go to McDonalds/AT&T wifi spot.  Or… knowing you are gonna be at the airport, download your book ahead of time.  FYI, what really gets you screwed is signing up for 3G on a tablet, let alone an e-ink tablet.

      • Cer

Signing up for 3G? On the Kindle and the first Nook there’s no fee for 3G
apart from the increased purchase price.

And yes, there’s a workaround for everything. But why there’s no 3G version
of the new Nook is beyond me. It makes the device exceedingly more
        convenient.

Also no mention that this is running Android 2.1.

I cant wait till we buy .5cm/1cm thick tablet or so sized e-ink(color?) all in one. Its wifi and you setup newspaper delivery onto it, maybe mags, but ppl love newspapers but paper is dying. And ipads dont make very good newspaper readers, i like books on it, but the e ink looks more newspapery, tm!
….i enjoy my ipad, i use garageband, great mobile studio++, also my htc evo.
I dont even own an e ink display device. But i think alot of tech holdouts, old old ppl, yur crazy uncle who doesnt want the govt tracking him. Idk. But itd ake a better newspaper replacement!
