Dell ready to unveil its next MacBook Air competitor following Adamo flop [video]

Computers

According to a report from The Wall Street Journal, Dell is ready to readdress the luxury notebook market with a new ultra-thin offering to take on Apple’s MacBook Air. Dell launched its sleek Adamo line in March 2009 and its first model was an underpowered, over-designed offering that started at $2,000. Dell would later introduce less expensive Adamo laptops but consumers still wouldn’t bite, and the Adamo line was killed off in early 2011. On Tuesday, Dell will unveil its latest attempt to capture the hearts, minds and credit card numbers of prospective MacBook Air buyers with the slender XPS 15z. The new laptop will sport a price tag that starts at $999, and while Apple’s MacBook Air starts at $999 as well, that sum will only get you an 11-inch Air while Dell’s new notebook will apparently be the thinnest 15-inch laptop on the planet. Hit the break for a teaser video Dell ran earlier this month.

I cannot bring myself to order anything from this company. Their products keep turning out badly.

I used to feel the same way towards Dell. My XPS M1210, which has been alive and well for the past 4 years, has restored some of my hope in them (that is, after a got rid of Vista and put 7 on it).

Who said this was a MBA competitor?  This is a MBP competitor.  Its not even trying to compete with the MBA.

Yep, even if Dell can make this thin enough to compete with a MBA, they’ll never get around the weight of a 15″ screen.

    • Mattock

You are right. This thing is barely thinner than a MBP, which is under an inch also. Every blog has gotten this wrong today.

      • Mattock

Actually, I just saw that the Dell is thicker than the MBP.

Actually *thicker* than the MacBook Pro. #corrections

Engadget just reviewed it and it sounds like they *tried* to like it but just couldn’t. They’re pretty Mac-centric over at Engadget, but they pointed out some pretty glaring weaknesses. Dell’s claim of 8 hours of battery life was about double what Engadget got. They also talked about the flimsiness of the keyboard. Guess I’ll stick with my MacBook Air and my ThinkPad a while longer.

If it has the same house power as a hooked up XPS 15, well I am sold. Good think i haven’t bought the XPS 15 yet (mind you, I am a pretty big dude so if it’s still heavier then a MBP, which it will be, I don’t mind carrying awesomeness and neither should anyone)

Disclaimer: Midgets, women of 6-9 months and men that look like Steve Jobs should not carry. Before attempting to carry without first consulting our doctor as misuse my result in shorter people, lose of sight and hair, anal bleeding, receiving a molly-whop and last turning into Steve Ballmer or Jim Balsillie (your choice xD)

Marketing this thing as the slimmest 15″ PC laptop on the planet is a joke. It’s like saying you have the fastest pig-themed toaster on wheels east of the chesapeake. Only problem is, there’s a snow leopard-themed Mercedes just across the street.

Isn’t this more of a competitor to the Macbook Pro?  Almost the same exact thickness and weight, made of aluminum, etc.  It will need to shed over 2lbs to reach Air specs.

It’s worth pointing out that they are just *saying* this is the thinnest laptop, when in fact, it’s actually *thicker* than an old MacBook Pro let alone the Air.

I’m not anti-Dell or anything but that just isn’t right.

I know the silly title is good for page view whoring but if its runs Windows its not a MBA competitor.

Looks like an Apple MBP rehash from 5 years ago.
