Motorola DROID X2 hands-on

mobile

There isn’t anything quite like a dual-core Android handset to brighten up your Saturday, huh? We have just spent some time with the Motorola DROID X2 for Verizon Wireless, and while the external casing hasn’t changed much, this is indeed a very new phone. For starters, like we mentioned, that super-fast 1GHz CPU that powered the original DROID X is now a screaming-fast 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor. If that wasn’t enough, the screen now features qHD resolution, bringing the LCD into modern times. The DROID X2 still features an 8-megapixel camera around back, and also runs Android 2.2 with a 2.3 upgrade coming at some point. The UI is a little bit refreshed as well, and we like the four static apps on the bottom of every screen as opposed to the overlay that used to appear, which was viciously annoying. All in all, this is one of the fastest devices available on Verizon Wireless, and while it isn’t a 4G phone, it’s certainly one of our favorites already. There’s a few more hands-on photos in the gallery!

Does the display use a regular RGB matrix or a PenTile family matrix for the subpixel layout?

PenTile is used by Samsung in their AMOLED displays, in LCD displays they use an RGB Matrix.

It’s pentile, like the Atrix display

Good thing you used a nice, neutral, non-distracting background for the photos.

Just like the iPhone. It’s the same thing every yr with some old features added to it.

      • Anonymous

Almost sal. Except the iPhone has a better hardware build and way better software. And the iPhone 4 has different features than all the past iPhones.

Yeah your right…just like every other Android phone…Stupid..

Really launching with a Dual Core Processor and OS version that doesn’t support dual core processors No front facing Cam and the same exact design as the last one. How hard is it to put 2.3 on these phones so it can take advantage of the dual core power and change up the design a little? At this rate phones are going to start launching with Gingerbread when I.C.S is available.

ZZZZZZzzzzzzzz. Who won the white iPhone 4? It is taking way too long to find out!

There is absolutely no reason for this phone not to be running 2.3 gingerbread out of the box.

Hey, I’m a BlackBerry user but I’ve dabbled with Android. 6 months with an Epic 4G and an Evo 4G on Sprint, so take this with a grain of salt. I can’t see the point in buying a super-fast Android device if it doesn’t have LTE or WiMax capabilities. Would you buy a Ferrari and run 4 poly-spare tires instead of the Pirelli racing tires is should come with?

    • Anonymous

actually, it’s more like why would you buy a Ferrari if all you have are roads with 55mph street signs.  Well, you can take the Ferrari to the track and race it.  you can put the X2 on a wifi connection and utilize the internet speeds for everything internet related that you wish.  I’ll be picking up one of these but don’t have the option of LTE (or any 4G access for that matter) and likely won’t for at least a few years.  In the mean time, that doesn’t mean I don’t want a device that can perform other duties.  Internet Connectivity is only part of a devices appeal.

BGR is so pro-apple it’s not funny!!!! All they do is talk good about apple and their products!!!!!

    • Anonymous

When you are the best at what you do you are always talked about.

Bottom line —> If it’s not an iPhone, then it’s not worth considering.

Who is going to buy a non LTE phone if they are on verizon? Only a fool

    • John58543

How bout someone that lives somewhere where LTE isn’t coming until 2013….

       Ya because lte is everywhere.sigh……DUH

People who wisely avoid first-gen wireless chips in their phones.

  • vzw.employee

everybody wants 4G….helloooooo 4G is probably not even in your city yet. Complain when u DO have 4G

    • Jb

I’ve had 4G since the rollout started so I will complain.   Verizon’s 4g phones are a joke so far.

      • vzw.employee

With any new technology there’s bound to be bumps in the road. And its great that you live in a 4G covered area. But understand everyone isn’t as fortunate as yourself. And Verizon isn’t a company that’s gonna throw half its customer base under the bus by making them pay a arm and a leg for a phone with features they can’t use. There is a 3g market still out there. So don’t complain about Verizon not making it 4G to suit one individual cause in reality they would rather lose you as a customer and gain 3 or 4 newer customers in a 3g region that love the Droid x 2

      • Jb

I don’t care if the Droid 2 is 3g or 4g.  I care that the 4g phones they have are garbage.  And if they aren’t concerned with losing me as a customer that’s fine because if the 4g phones are still garbage when my contract is up I’m gone anyways.

What is the UI-  Moto-Blur or stock Google Android?

    • tim

Its blurred. Motorola does not intend to make any more stock Android phones.

    • Anonymous

Moto thinks that now with dual core the phone finally has enough oooomph so that blur won’t lag as much as mess up the experience.  They added a second processor core just for the blur  (/sarcasm)

upgrade that ram and we might have a deal

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nicholas-Lee/1278970105 Nicholas Lee

Thought I read they’re using much better ram now.  DDR/DDR2, that works for me.. better than more, but slower RAM.

  • Drew

Thanks once again Verizon for “Logo Murdering” yet another device with your stupid logo on the front AND the back… We get it, it’s on Verizon. Nobody ever asks, “what carrier is that??” because no one gives a shit, they want to know what phone it is…

  • eyemgruvin

I’m no teckie but no LTE or front facing camera make me think “big deal”.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nicholas-Lee/1278970105 Nicholas Lee

If you’re “no teckie” then you shouldn’t care much about those features.  960×540, dual core, hdmi mirroring; I’m loving it and I’m a “teckie”.  I can admin a FFC would be nice, but only if you travel a lot and your family has a FFC as well.  Otherwise, use a laptop and Skype for video.

      • Anonymous

dual core but whats the point when it has 2.2 which don’t support dual core

      • eyemgruvin

I care because video chat to my family would be nice. Especially when my 13 year old is watching my 5 year old. I also use the browser quite a bit on my Droid X.  Those will be the features I will be looking for that are not in my present phone when my contract is up in November. Of course I am open to hearing about something else that might be useful to me from a teckie. Please start with hdmi mirroring..lol

  • JaceK

Getting it!   It’s a racehorse straight out of the gate.   3G is just fine and don’t live in a 4G area.  Plus, want to get in on the Verizon “unlimited” 5G data plans before they introduce restricted data plans this summer.  This phone has good size, good battery management, can be rooted, has a proven record, and it just works (the original x) like a performance muscle car.  Don’t care for the other phones they have out now, don’t want no ipfart, and tired of waiting, so this is it!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nicholas-Lee/1278970105 Nicholas Lee

      Word, I agree.

  • http://twitter.com/NICKVALENTIN0 Nick Valentino

     yawn

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nicholas-Lee/1278970105 Nicholas Lee

Stupid comment.  If you’re tired, take a nap.  This can’t be a yawn of a phone.  First dual core, qHD device, how is that not good?  Sure you can wait for the GS II (if it’ll be LTE), but then you may as well wait for a quad core motorola LTE phone, well…  shoooot, now the quad core 2ghz phones are coming out, may as well wait for those.   btw.. I’m loving this phone.

  • Anonymous

As a current owner of a DX, I don’t see a need to get this phone, but it’d be a pretty nice piece of hardware for someone coming from BB, or a feature phone.

  • Kristenmarquee

I bought the droid x around the fifth of this month. Wonder if I could take it back, and get this?

  • Cornbread

Yawwwwwwwn, wake me when there is an interesting Android device not exactly like all the others.

  • Scotter

Seriously… Summer of 2011 release and it doesn’t have 4G?
Yeah, I know other phones are coming out without 4G but that is no excuse.
Sprint and T-Mobile have been doing it since last year.
Even Verizon has other phones (Droid Bionic (coming) and HTC Thunderbolt) that are 4G capable.
