Google updates browser-based Maps for Android and iOS

mobile

Google — noting that 40% of its Google Maps users are on mobile devices — updated its Google Maps Web app for iOS and Android today. We’ve been pretty satisfied with the native applications on Android and iOS, but the website allows you to access many of the options that are available from a desktop browser, too. That includes the ability to view your location, search nearby areas with suggestions and auto-complete, get directions for driving, transit, biking, or walking, view different lays, view Place pages, and access your starred locations. We’re particularly excited about the option for accessing our starred locations, a feature that’s not available in the native iOS application. You can access the revamped interface by visiting maps.google.com from your iOS or Android device.

There are still no retina graphics on the iPhone 4 available.

No street view in web app, iOS app has street view.

Also google maps recently dropped real estate listings – too bad :(

Where’s the PlayBook support??  Come on Google!  It’s just another WebKit-based browser, should be easy enough to support…

    Dear Google,

Can you please update the native app for iOS to include audio turn by turn directions!

    Thank you

      Dear nicastro78,

The thing that you are looking for is android.

      Thank you

That will be a good while. Google Nav is strictly on Android. You never know though.

  • Be realistic

Google knows better not to waste time and energy in releasing anything for PlayBook, which they know is DOA already.

I mean, yeah, why develop an app for the second best selling tablet on the market.  That would be absolutely bonkers!

Don’t do that, it’s second place by a galactic ass margin, it’s not a large enough pool of devices to warrant throwing man hours at making a specific version of anything yet.

Google should not include iOS in current or future updates, lest it’s willing to be a party to privacy invasion, tracking, and Class Action lawsuits.

But then poor Google might lose money because you do know Apple sells a shit load of internet connected iOS devices. Its never been about a mobile product just mobile ad and search revenue for Google.

Daniel Alegre, Asia-Pacific president said to AdNews “Whenever iPhone
succeeds, Google succeeds. I actually don’t look at it as iPhone versus
Android. iPhone is a very strong driver of query growth for Google. We
also monetise apps through the iPhone..we actually benefit from iPhone’s
      growth.”

Why would anyone with Android use browser-based maps when the phones come pre-installed with the application?
