Sony security slump continues, subsidiary So-net Entertainment hacked

Gaming

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that hackers have accessed the customer accounts of Sony subsidiary So-net Entertainment Corp, an ISP, and have stolen about $1,225 worth of redeemable gift points. The news comes just weeks after Sony’s massive security breach, during which private information and 12.3 million credit card numbers were stolen from more than 100 million Sony’s Qriocity and PlayStation Network users. Sony said the So-net hacker tried to break into its systems more than 10,000 times before he or she was able to successfully log-in. The intruder was able to access 201 accounts, and he or she stole the redeemable points from 128 customers. “Although we can’t completely rule out the possibility that there is a connection with the PSN issue, the likelihood is low,” said So-net Entertainment spokesperson Keisuke Watabe, noting that the style of attack was different. So-net does not believe that personal information was taken during the break-in.

Well… kudos for it not being an epic clusterfuck. One wonders what was so special about attempt 10,001, though. Can Sony (and/or one of its subsidiaries) just be brute-forced into submission?

Fail yet again Sony… I wonder if all this retailiation from the comunity of the lawsuit of Geohot? If so, I wonder if Sony regrets the lawsuit.

its all attributed to GeoHot. Sony barked up the wrong tree.
this is what happens when the big bully finally gets punched back.
i was a little disappointed that PSN went down for 3 weeks, but i understand why the hackers are doing this (just leave psn alone as its my only way of relief after a long day or talking to my wife and dealing with 2 little kids)

Are you kidding me?  You “understand why the hackers are doing this”?  I understand too, but stealing credit card information as well as email and passwords then selling it on the Internet black market is not cool.  Period.  The breach alone was enough to hurt Sony, don’t hurt the public (who support the open console movement).

I’d wonder if this would just push Sony away from open-source tech toward Microsoft.  Hitting PSN is probably the only way to really hurt Sony considering they ignored customers for the rest: cd rootkits, etc etc.

LMAO…why do I still have any Sony products?  This i just getting ridiculous.

    • Ewald Van den Heede

Because it could be the same for microsoft, but Sony just pushed it to far with GeoHot…
So if it happens with Microsoft, you shouldn’t buy any products from them too?

It’s bullshit to consider to not buy things because of that. It’s not that hackers couldn’t get information of any other server accept of Sony.

I think the new Sony phone Verizon is releasing will sell well….

Steve jobs take note: let us keep our jailbreaks or geohot and his gang will target you..
Could you imagine if the app/iTunes market was hacked… The amount of cards on file there??

      Jailbreaking the iPhone is legal.

Plus, Apple is really nice with hackers; They keep jailbreak holes for several iOS versions, don’t ban users from the App Store etc.

I don’t see how Sony, or So-net failed. According to the article somebody brute-forced several customer accounts. So technically, the customers fail for using 123456 as their password.

So how do you “steal” virtual gift points?  And if they’re tagged and stolen, how come PSN doesn’t just blacklist those points and reimburse the original owners?  As far as credit card info, it sounds like Sony’s got their work cut out because they should be the ones having to report to credit card companies of the theft.  IMO, the only thing they have going for them is BluRay.  For no other reason would i ever buy a Sony product.

Sony now makes all their money on Movies (blockbuster Superhero types, etc) and on music.
