Nokia Windows Phones to pack dual-core processors

mobile

Nokia will launch 12 Windows Phone devices in 2012 — and a few of them will offer dual-core processors. Speaking to Forbes during STMicroelectronics’ analyst day, STMicroelectronics’ CEO Carlo Bozotti confirmed that his company still has “very close relations” with Nokia and that it will be “an important supplier” in Nokia’s future Windows Phone products. A few of Nokia’s phones will be powered by ST-Ericsson’s U8500 system-on-a-chip (SoC) package, which offers support ARM Cortex-A9 dual-core processors. Nokia is said to already have a Windows Phone in the works, and while the company has set a 2012 target date for its debut, Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop has expressed interest in shipping it before the end of 2011.

    I can’t wait.

It’s about time. Windows Phones have really been mediocre with respect to hardware. Just look at the new HTC HD7 that was just announced. It has a second rate processor and a GPU that is three generations old. If Microsoft wants to succeed, they really need to start shipping on hardware that is the best you can buy.

To be fair, the Samsung Focus is still a pretty solid device, spec-wise.  I know what you mean though.  The Surround, HD7, Quantum (ugh), and the vast majority of WP7 phones are running really crappy hardware.  Shame too, because the OS is great.

Then again, if the OS runs smooth on an old processor, what’s the problem?

The only real difference between the focus and the rest is the screen.

Fwah???  They are launching a series of phones in 2012(!!!) and “a few” of them will be dual core???  Do they all have screens?!  Come on guys, WinPho and Nokia are starting at the back of the bus, you can’t pull half-arsed specs in phones launching almost a year from now – dual core phones will be de rigueur this fall.

    Fail.

You realize that Windows Phone runs like butter on 1st gen Snapdragons and you want to complain about phones that might be shipping with dual core processors later this year? Android phones have dual core processors and they still have lag.

Yeah, WinPho uses more GPU acceleration for the UI (like iOS) while Android has taken longer to get there because it stymies OEM customization options.  Gingerbread eliminates almost all of the lag, and I expect ICS to go even further.

But I’m not talking about UI lag, I’m talking about the app ecosystem.  Having an Xbox section on WinPho will look pretty silly if the games on iOS and Android blow them out of the water.

WinPho is already mostly irrelevant – if they want to reverse the trend they have to leapfrog and get ahead, not brag about adding features and hardware that are already the norm on other systems.

I think WinPho is a great operating system actually.  I’d pick it over iOS or BB if it had a proper ecosystem and I wanted to get away from Android.  I also think Nokia makes great hardware.  But this transition has been handled so ineptly I expect them both to be abject failures unless someone starts showing the ability to execute better and faster than the competition.

I am seriously looking forward to seeing what Nokia’s involvement less to in regard to Windows Phone. I want to be able to send videos from my phone. I want a chat client that is “official.” I want a better web browser. I want better applications.

The operating system itself is excellent. I like it more than Android and iOS for sure. I just want the ecosystem around it to build. Nokia can bring that to the platform with their huge following. I am very hopeful…

I hope they don’t use that design but I’m also waiting for a nice WP7 witth LTE.

I would certainly purchase a well specced, attractive Windows Phone.  I love the OS.
