Verizon CFO reaffirms next iPhone will be ‘world phone’, LTE status unknown

mobile

In an interview with Reuters, Verizon Communications’ chief financial officer, Fran Shammo, reaffirmed several details about his company’s next iPhone offering. “Verizon’s [next iPhone] version will also work in as many countries as AT&T’s iPhone, which has global coverage,” writes Reuters, paraphrasing Mr. Shammo. The executive also noted that the inclusion of LTE in the next CDMA iDevice is not something Verizon has control over. “I think it’s a bigger issue for Apple than it is for us,” said Shammo speaking about the need for an LTE iPhone. “Depending on where Apple plays, that’s where we’ll sell.” The latest rumors have Apple releasing a refreshed version of its smartphone product later this fall. Most pundits agree that the update wil not include a Verizon-compatible LTE radio.

They can’t seriously be considering releasing a non LTE device in September.  VZW already has 4G running in hella cities.  By September they’ll probably have most of the population covered and people are just going to expect phones to have 4G.

If they plan on charging more for 4g I am fine with skipping it. 3g is enough for my needs , and paying more for speed that’s capped use anyway is a waste.

Verizon has made their 3G and 4G pricing the same. You can confirm that yourself with a simple stroll to the VZW website. Verizon has also said their moving to tiered plans and that will be for both 3G and 4G.

You can stroll over to engadget and see that vzw will be switching to tiered pricing shortly.

America is just one pool but Apple is as manufacturer of a handset will not release an LTE iPhone when the majority of the networks is runs on are just now considering a switch to LTE, China mobile is going to be doing trials on LD LTE next year so it makes perfect business sense for them to wait for the carriers to get on board with LTE before making any plans.

Is the majority of the world using the same frequencies for LTE as VZW? AT&T? Also, I thought it was semi-understood that Apple was waiting for the battery issues that LTE causes to be resolved.

    • Anonymous

Last I heard, there is no agreed upon frequency for LTE. And the battery issue is the reason why Apple is not moving to LTE yet. They aren’t interested in making a US specific phone that only lasts four hours.

Am I the only one that noticed that the rumors are calling it the iPhone4s, and not the iPhone4G or 4Gs.  Sorry guys, no 4G for you. :p

World Phone ????  Verizon sure will not make the GSM side unlocked!  They will not let you use local SIM cards from wherever Country you go to.  You have to use Verizon’s own SIM card and pay an arm and a leg to use this phone internationally./  Unlock the GSM and then call it a World Phone.

when I had a Blackberry on Verizon they unlocked it for me so
