Rockstar suggests Sony’s latest PS3 firmware update is causing console to overheat

Gaming

As if Sony didn’t have enough issues to deal with, Rockstar, the developer behind hits like Grand Theft Auto and L.A. Noir, is reporting that the latest 3.61 firmware update for the Sony PS3 is causing units to overheat. “We have received some reports of PS3s overheating while playing L.A. Noire or beeping three times before shutting down / turning themselves off, mostly on older 60GB and 80GB fat models,” Rockstar customer service team said on its support page, as reported by MCVUK. The developer suggested that the problem is not limited to L.A. Noir and that gamers are experiencing the same issue on other titles — the red light or PS3 freeze usually occurs 30 minutes to 2 hours into gameplay. Hit the jump for a statement from Rockstar’s customer service, which the company has clarified is not official.

“At this time we are recommending contacting Sony directly to report the overheating issue. However, this is not the end of our support; we are continuing to test L.A. Noire on all firmware versions and hardware models to isolate the issues and see what can be done. As always, we will update this article as soon as we have updates.”

Why is everything Sony doing epic failing?

How is Rockstar’s code overheating PS3′s and 360′s, a problem with Sony?

      • Anonymous

Rockstar didn’t make Black Ops and that caused my fan to run wild and overheat my PS3 and break it.

      • Anonymous

You must have it in a closed environment, my old ps3 NEVER over heated and I’ve put 4-5 hours straight on it all the time (black ops and gt5)
I use a vertical stand as well, and it sits right next to my tv never had a problem.
Hell even my buddy has his ps3 sitting on top of his comcast cable box (his crazy gf puts it there even if he moves it so he finally gave up) and his never overheats either.

      • Anonymous

I misstated my claim. The system update that was forced out after PSN was brought up is what screwed with my fan. Black Ops is the game I was playing when it overheated.

where in the article do you see it saying anything with 360? this is a Sony problem

      • Anonymous

Well, it’s not entirely unexpected that someone who only refers to this article would assume it’s only affecting PS3′s, hence my responses below.  My suggestion, seek further detail for all news stories, elsewhere.  Or, in the very least, simply google it.  There are numerous sites and articles now detailing this to be a problem for both the 360 and PS3.  Not just the PS3.

Ergo, Rockstar’s problem…or an ignorance problem on your part, either way.

Statement from Rockstar and Sony as follows:

“We have received a very small number of customer support questions about PS3’s overheating or shutting down while playing L.A. Noire. At this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither L.A. Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat. We are both committed to working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise. If you are experiencing any issues with L.A. Noire or your PS3 hardware, please contact technical support using any of the means provided below:”

My apologies for making you read more than a headline, I know it’s much easier to float through life with no real understanding of, anything.

my point still stands, where in this article does it state 360…u can go on your search for the truth on other sites but nothing in THIS article states 360…THIS is one comment arena for THIS article..
        asshole..
i think someone isn’t as smart as they think they are…

I wouldn’t necessarily say or assume I’m smarter than anyone I run into anonymously on a random website.  However, vastly more informed?  That goes without question.  That you can honestly sit there and question my intelligence, when I’ve given more effort in my responses and consequently, more information than even author of this piece, definitely doesn’t support your theories.

Though, that you had to resort to name-calling to somehow substantiate the zero ground you’re standing on, I’ll take it with a grain of salt.

    GOD DAM IT SONY
guess so far i just been lucky to not have any issues with my old “big boned” ps3

  • Rallymonkeez

Happened to me.  I updated to 3.61, played Enslaved for about 15 minutes, and boom…PS3 was dead.

    • http://twitter.com/homescrub homescrub

i see wut u did thar

Same happened to me with Black Ops.  Played one game before it turned off.  Turned it on and got about 2 minutes into it.  I called Sony 2 days ago to complain and got no where.  I called again today and got talked into paying for the servicing fee because the supervisor was throwing in a free controller or game of my choice.  I knew I should have waited longer before agreeing to pay.  I’m going to call the supervisor back (who assured me the update was for security purposes only, not affecting the console) and let him know about this and hopefully get my servicing fee waived.

      • Rallymonkeez

Ya, I unfortunately traded in my old console + $100 for a PS3 slim.  I’m calling them today and reaming them out big time.  Let me know what you find.

  • Florence

This happened to me while playing portal last night. I beat the game in one sitting before the update and it never happened. Hmm…

With all of your guys’ attacks on Sony, you’d think Apple was about to launch a game console.

    • Sexbox

The problem for Apple is… they will want to sell gaming equipment for a premium. So Apple will build a console from parts that are no better and no more expensive than a playstation (or xbox) but since the top of the console will have a shiny apple logo, they will mark up the price by $300.00. Also, You’re probably looking at $100.00 a game.

Unless Apple completely goes against everything they’ve ever done as a company, they will not put out a competitivley price gaming system. Therefore they will never succeed in the gaming industry outside of what’s availble in the app market for your other ihabits.

      • Anonymous

Kind of like how they would never succeed in the phone industry?  Like it or not, there’s a significant number of people who will pay for what they perceive as the convenience and usability apple gives them.

      • Sexbox

You can’t fool the gaming community. Apple can get away puttinng glossy paint on bullshit in other industries (imacs, iphones, ifuckingeverythingelse), they will not fool anyone in to buying a product that is not better than it’s competetion, if it’s indeed not better than the competetion.

      • DonRSD aka PSN DonVCorleone

the iphone 4 is better than any phone on the market today……and its a year old :)

      • http://profiles.google.com/hittrj01 Ryan Hitt

Right, because the iOS devices aren’t arguably the best portable gaming devices on the market. Infinity Blade, Real Racing HD, Dead Space… and those are just the high-profile games. There are little hundreds if not thousands of excellent games on those devices. And guess what? They are all priced from free up to a whopping $10, usually. Yep, a lot more expensive than those $60 Xbox games you love or the $30-$40 PSP and DS games they are competing against.

      • Serpentinefire_1116

Mr. VCorleone:  I have to disagree.  I’ve fiddled with the iPhone and my personal phone is an Evo.  I will have to say I prefer the Evo, not the least for the 4G service.  I will admit that not being able to watch Netflix on my phone is annoying, but HBOGo solved that.  It’s a pretty kickass phone, that’s not limited by Apple’s restrictions.

      • Anonymous

They already tried and failed in the past with the Pippin.  With the success of mobile gaming, I would be extremely surprised to see Apple, nor anyone else besides the three established players enter the market.  PlayOn is the fourth, but I’d say they are a few years too early.

  • Mornelithe

Way to fail at journalism, Rockstar has since backtracked and noted that Xbox 360′s are also suffering from overheating due to LA Noire.  This is not a Sony problem, it’s a Rockstar problem.

    • Joel

You fail as my Xbox is not overheating and I played all the way through the first disc. Yes I have an old fat Xbox 360 got it at launch runs solid.

      • Anonymous

Joel, please, try not to get confused, this is a very simple issue.  If every console was overheating, there’d be a much bigger to-do, going on over it.  This is a case of isolated machines being adversely affected by Rockstar’s coding.

It’s rather difficult for me to ‘fail’, when I’m simply including additional information that Mr. Cut and Paste overlooked.  Not surprising, when you just cut and paste from another news site, rather than researching it on a more broad scope, you tend to only see pieces and parts of the whole scenario.  In this case, Todd is reporting on a story that broke over 24 hours ago, and has since had additional developments.  Which is kind of sad, since if you simply do a google search for La Noire, you’ll find a plethora of articles outlining the entire situation.

      • ApplesNAndroids

+1 for an intelligent response to an otherwise immature gut punch.

      • Imdumberforreadingthis

Seriously man, give it a rest.

The article says “firmware 3.61″ not 360. Can you read “3.61″ not 360? Stop going off topic.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GP2WYAHXS6CRUREISWBGPUSUGE Michael

hum. I since i got the update i’ve played for going on 4 hours. 2 hours per trip w/o any problems.

    • Anonymous

Yeah I played UC2 MP for a couple hours last night without any problems.  I have an original CECHA-01 fat 60g.

    • Anonymous

Me and you both. Played God of War for hours yesterday without a problem.

  • Egghead6697

I got an old one and was able to play COD for 6-8 hours and nothing happened.

  • http://twitter.com/homescrub homescrub

Since the update, I’ve minimized my time in playing down to 1 hour, since, PSN made me get a life.

  • Rimbuk

Really? People believe this from Rockstar? How gullible are you?
Just stay away from Rockstar products and you’ll be doing everyone a favor.

  • Lazerbrains

My machine has suddenly been kicking the fans into high gear since the update. It has gotten much louder, even while just watching movies.

  • Jspartansc

This is a Rockstar Isssue. They had the same Problems with the last GTA with 20GB and 40GB playstations. Its the games fault, not the system software.

    • Anonymous

Wrong.  The article even states that the problem is happening on other games.  It happened to me on Black Ops.  The article shouldn’t have Rockstar in the headline because it’s a Sony issue for sure.

      • Anonymous

Considering both Rockstar and Sony have made official statements regarding the situation, it seems more than appropriate that Rockstar is part of this article.  Besides, I’m having trouble finding any articles _prior_ to LA Noire’s launch, detailing PS3′s overheating.  And yes, I do actually read more news than just one article, mashed together from exerpts of anothers work.

  • DonRSD aka PSN DonVCorleone

i have no desire to play any other game than Battlefield Bad Company 2 online with my ps3 :)

i cant wait for BF3 this fall

    • loki

Agreed but my game froze 3 times after playing for about an hour and for the rest of my squad aswell.

  • http://rmbo47.myopenid.com/ rmbo47

Sony can’t catch a break!  First the hack, and all the embarrassment that goes with such a failure. Then SonyEricsson had a shitload of Xperia phones hijacked – enough to delay the phone’s launch in at least one country. And now one of their most popular console titles doesn’t play nice with the new console firmware. They really are just full of fail~

PS3 slim, XBOX360 no over heating issues.  Sony, come on, get it together.

  • http://profiles.google.com/jonzey231 Logan Jones

It’s not just that game, my PS3 Slim froze 4 different times today while playing Battlefield: BC3.

  • http://twitter.com/JAviles07 Jose Aviles

I updated play black ops two games turned my system off went back later that night turned on my ps3 it stayed on for about 30seconds shut off to never turn on again

  • Jesster King

My system has never over heated but it has the most ventilation possible without extra fans, it sits on a wire shelf with nothing around it.

  • Kyle_etwaroo

I think this is happening to be but I was playing an older game, Fallout 3, just recently and I thought it was the game but it starts to freeze if I play it for a while (ex. 2hrs +) how true is this statement ?

With all of sorts of problems for sony popping up, i wonder if sony will ever feel like making another console.
