Microsoft sells 1.6M Windows Phone handsets in Q1

Software

According to research firm Gartner, although Microsoft shipped 2 million Windows Phone units during Q4 of 2010, it sold 1.6 million units during Q1 of 2011.”Windows Phone saw only modest sales that reached 1.6 million units in the first quarter of 2011,” wrote Gartner. “Devices launched at the end of 2010 failed to grow in consumer preference and CSPs continued to focus on Android.” Gartner is, however, predicting big things for Microsoft’s smartphone operating system. By 2015, the analytics company predicts that Windows Phone will see shipments in excess of 215 million units — thanks in large part to its partnership with Nokia. This would put Microsoft in second place in global market share — behind the open-source smartphone-overlord Android and ahead of the not-so-open-source iOS.

Curious how many were sold to Microsoft employees, their families, and other Microsoft required purchasers such as closely affiliated companies whose life depends on keeping Microsoft happy.

I think you should ask the same for Google and Apple.

The difference is that google and apple have sold hundreds of millions of sets…  So even if they gave away some, there is no comparison…
With the paltry numbers for MS, it makes a huge difference…

      • http://twitter.com/starksimon Stark

Google has sold 36.3 and Apple 16.9 million phones during the first quarter. That’s not even close to “hundreds of millions of sets”. Not even on a yearly basis. So, no. Wait for the Mango update and the 2nd generation of WP phones (Nokia). Then we can talk again about selling numbers. I bet they’re going to sell like hot cakes.

I think zapote21 said they “have sold hundreds of millions”…and besides, 36.3 million plus 16.9 million times 4 would be 212.8 million annualized.  I’ll have to double check, but I believe that is “hundreds of millions”…”even on a yearly basis” as you put it.

@simonstark:disqus You mean like how Android is going to sell even faster with Ice Cream? Google TV, Chromebooks, Tablets and Smartphones all running the same OS and same apps. Gonna murder the market.

Very good point! We know that a few hundred were given out to attendees at the NYC WP7 event at the Rolling Stone building last fall. How many other similar events were held globally?

LOL@ only 1.6 million. Sound like a solid start to me. #FocusUser

    • Prof. Peabody

They sold 2 million WindowsMobile phones during the same period.  And the MS share of the smartphone market *decreased* by 50% this year when the overall market *grew* by 84%.  Also, Android sold 20 times more handsets during the same period.  20 times.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, go look at Android first year. Then come back with stats. And who said anything about Android. The decrease is coming from people ditching WM for other phones, whether it’s iOS phones or Android phones or Web OS phones or WP7…

Android and iPhone sell that in a few days.

IDK, if you’re not reading or just not understanding.

I just don’t see it. Microsoft is catching up with what Apple and Google did back in 2008, Now you don’t think Apple and Google are just going to stand still until Microsoft catches up. By 2015 Microsoft is going to be where google and apple are today and google and Apple will be way ahead. Remember when Microsoft thought that buying out Danger and renaming it Kim was going to solve all their problems, we all know what happen with that.

It is a lot easier to play catch up than it is to innovate. Android and iOS have reached a point where isn’t really anything major and obvious that is left to do.

Fortunately, Microsoft isn’t just playing catch up. They are doing their own thing and Android and iOS are playing catch up in certain places (like music streaming).

Andrew, Zach has a mistake in his Apple Retail anniversary piece. Yes, another mistake.
I’m no crApple expert but, I think he meant, May 21, 2001??
Though, this time he used an appropriate picture.

Why do all these analysts believe that Nokia has some kind of magical draw for consumers?  Just because Nokia hopped in the sack with Uncle Ballmer is no guarantee that people will flock to its love child.

My prediction is Microsoft will remain irrelevant in the mobile computing world.  They were so busy drinking the milk from the Windows/Office cow that they didn’t realize the future of computing was moving on without them.

In Europe, Nokia does have a magical draw for consumers. Their hardware prowess is well-known. Their issue lately has been fucking it up with terrible software. Take that out of the equation and, well… you can see why they’re hopeful.

Maybe just maybe why the Euros like Nokia so much is for it’s f***ed OS. Did you ever think of that smarty pants?

Windows Phone blows and everyone knows it!

Each of the mobile operating systems currently available have pros and cons. I’m too reasonable to get drawn into your puerile attempt at flaming. Go play with someone else.

         I keep thinking about that.

Take BlackBerrys for example.  If RIM stopped producing their own OS (never will happen, but just go with it for argument’s sake), and adopted Android or Windows, many BlackBerry users would jump ship and lose all loyalty to RIM.  The same would happen with Apple.  If Apple adopted Android or Windows Mobile, many of their customers would jump ship and lose all loyalty (others would buy anything with an Apple logo on it).  Why don’t analysts consider this when talking about Nokia and Windows?

Android has proven that people will be loyal to an OS, not necessarily a hardware manufacturer.  Current Symbian users may have NO interest in Windows Mobile.  In fact, the OSes are VERY different and I see a lot of Symbian users jumping ship to Android or iOS, not sticking with Nokia and Windows Mobile.
        We shall see…

I agree Gregory and time will tell if Nokia can help MS. Many of the Euros that I know are pretty nationalist and prefer stuff made in Europe. I’ve always thought one of the reasons Nokia and their OS did well there was it was created in Europe by a European company.

Times have changed in the mobile marketplace and Android is the new “windows” and I don’t think this is going to change anytime soon.

Personally I think Nokia should have finished Meego 100% sold this on the high end devices. Cleaned up Symbian UI and sold on the lower end. Basically the path they were going on until all this Windows nonsense started. People are giving them too much credit on their hardware (which I think is good) as that lasts about 5 seconds until someone else announces something better.

I agree with you there, they can’t be much better than the stupid zune I bought a little over a year ago. They are so closed off they don’t even allow people to make apps and submit them. And as far as I know they can’t access youtube like every other smart phone or anything worth buying can.

Nokia has a huge brand presence in Asia and would help microsoft gain some foot hold in terms of market share. But I feel it will be to little to late as by the time Nokia windows 7 phones come out in 2012. The asian market will be flooded with really cheap android phones

    • Anonymous

It may actually be Windows 8 phones by then….

Not that that really matters, but just wanted to point that out.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, MadCent. com

The thing is if Windows phones 7 does take off with the Nokia deal, it will be because of Nokia’s hardware and most probably little to do with Microsoft’s mobile OS.

Nokia will probably ditch the ugly tiles.  Otherwise another jump off of a burning platform.
