Apple inks cloud-music deal with EMI; Sony, Universal in the works

Services

Apple has completed a cloud-music streaming deal with record label EMI, according to a report filed by CNET. Citing multiple industry sources, the publication notes that Apple, Sony Music Entertainment and the Universal Music Group are working on agreements as well; a previous report claims that Warner Music Group and Apple already signed a cloud service agreement sometime last month. “Apple will finish behind Google and Amazon in the race to the cloud, but Apple now has the freedom to offer a range of features that rivals are prevented from rolling out because of the licensing restrictions,” continues the article. Rumors state that Apple will use a technology acquired from Lala called “scan and match.” Instead of uploading a subscribers music library to Apple’s cloud-music service, the company would scan a music collection and provide access to the master track it has a license to. Apple and the music labels in question declined to comment on the report when contacted by CNET.

And Apple continues to not be first to get there but the first to do it right and do it best. What else is new. This is what happens when you have smarts running your business.

’Best’ remains to be seen.  Google Music could be better (like non-existant tag syncing), but at least they didn’t sell out to the labels.

If scan and match avoids screwing up the music you didn’t happen to download from iTunes, then it’ll be a good service.  Me thinks there are going to be some growing pains there though.

I disagree. “the first to do it right”, I think Apple just set a bad precedent. Why should licensing fees be paid for an mp3 I have already purchased, just cause I want to stream it from a remote server? This just feeds the Music Execs need to squeeze more income out of the same music and I think this will lead to an increase in the cost of digital music.

I hope ALL of your music was bought in iTunes.  I predict scan and match is gonna wreak havoc.  At the very least, it won’t allow into the cloud.

    — Hahaha. I’m sorry but I can’t help but associate these licensing restrictions with what happened between Apple and Samsung. I mean, how come Apple is obsessing about these licensing stuff, anyway? I don’t even hear other brands or companies broadcast publicly that there will be licensing restrictions in their products so you can’t steal it. I mean, I think everyone in this industry knows the issues that will be faced about stealing, thank you very much.

Anyway, that’s just my opinion. But I’m happy as how this deal turns out. Towards the end, I just realized how competitive Apple can be and that it is obviously shown to its competitors.

Who cares about what Blackberry had. Blackberry is for idiots. Their CEOs belong in the mental asylum.

Scan and Match? Does that mean we have to buy music? Because no one really wants to buy music.  We just want access to listen to a song whenever/wherever.  It’s the future, there is no need to “own” anything if everything is accessible at all times.  Like RDIO or Netflix.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, MadCent. com
