New MacBook Air models could launch next month

General

Looking to scoop up one of Apple’s ultra-light notebook offerings? You may want to hold on to your wallet for a few more weeks. According to the latest report, Apple is preparing to update the notebook line in the not-too-distant future. “The Taiwan-based supply chain for Apple products will begin shipments of new 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch MacBook Air models featuring Sandy Bridge platform and Thunderbolt interface in late May for launch in June or July,” reads a report filed by DigiTimes. The article goes on to note that the updated Air will be assembled by Quanta Computer, with Catcher Technology, Auras Technology, Shin Zu Shing, Simplo Technology, and Dynapack all supplying components. The report echos earlier prognostications made by Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. The current iterations of the MacBook Air were first revealed in October of 2010, just 7-months ago.

I’m more interested in a Mac Mini with ThunderBolt for a sbs. But if I was to get a laptop, the Air would be the route I’d go.

Let see if the trend of “Netbook Specs, Mobile Workstation Price” continues…

      Plus horribly looking!

Have you used the Air? One of the fastest real-world computers for media consumption and light creation. And I don’t see many netbooks with SSDs.

I would never use one as I have no need for one. With my XOOM 4G LTE I have everything I need.

Haha, are you high? The original netbook, the Eee PC, shipped with an SSD back in 2008, SSDs in netbooks are nothing new. You can buy a MacBook air spec netbook made by Dell, HP, or ASUS, for 400 – 500, but of course there is no shiny apple on the outside.

I just searched Amazon and Bestbuy, and all the netbooks I saw use HDDs. I saw an upgrade for 32GB SSD when is tiny. Can you point me to a specific netbook that offers comparable specs so I can educate myself?

I did the HP thing two to three times for each model. The starting cost, about $700 per equipment; breakdown (cover peels away from screen, hinges break, every power cord fails after 3-4 months use, seems on the units peel apart, cover can no longer close, screen continually blacks out…). It continues for nearly 2 years. Total expenditure; nearly $5000.00 for replacements, repairs, parts, service etc…

I got sick of it; bought a Mac; initial cost $1700.00 on my third year. Still running, using it for CAD/CAM and BIM simulations. The damn machine runs faster than the previous WinTel boxes with beefier specs. Next purchase; Mac Book Pro.

I wouldn’t give my MBA up for anything

dude I’ve been buying a new PC laptop every year for the last 6 years. I’m getting pissed that they keep breaking down, I even baby my shit!

Two weeks ago I bought a MacBook Pro. I wanted the Air because it’s sexy and slim, but I got the Pro for beefier processor and more HDD.

For the price, It’s justified. After what I used to spend on repairs (or replacements) and knowing about Apple’s track record (quite a few of my friends have Mac’s that are still ticking some 4 to 6 years later) I’m pretty darned excited. Plus the OS is way better than Windows.

I find it so funny that people continually compare the MacBook Air to a netbook. My wife had a Lenovo Netbook with a 1.6 GB processor and 2 GBs of Ram. It was completely unusable. Compare that to my 11″ MBA, also with a 1.6GB processor (dual core however), but with 4GBs of ram which I use as my primary machine about 50% of the time. There simply is no comparison. I am no Apple fanboy. Not a fan of IOS at all, but swallow your pride and recognize quality when it exists. It is not the fastest machine available, but is worlds away from a standard netbook.

Totally agree with the statement. Put your money behind a reputable company with a great service reputation and they are headed in the right direction. No need to play the fan boy card, it’s effen tired already.
